Australian F1 driver Doohan calls for online abuse to stop
Australian Formula One driver Jack Doohan has pleaded for online abuse of his family to stop after being targeted on social media.
The 22-year-old, son of former motorcycling world champion Mick Doohan, was this month dropped by the Alpine team after only six races.
He was replaced by Argentina's Franco Colapinto, who finished 16th at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Italy on Sunday following a big crash in qualifying.
Writing to his nearly 500,000 followers on Instagram, Doohan said a fake post attributed to his father had been created on there to paint the elder Doohan in a bad light.
'Please stop harassing my family. I didn't think I would have to get to this point,' Doohan wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of what he said was the fake post.
It showed a picture of Colapinto after a crash and Doohan senior supposedly commenting, 'Very impressive'.
'Multiple Argentine outlets falsely reported the fabricated image, which triggered the online abuse of my family,' Doohan, now a reserve driver for Alpine, wrote.
A separate Alpine statement also called for an end to the abuse.
'We encourage everyone to remember that behind the visor of these superhuman athletes there is a person, an individual with feelings, family, friends and loved ones,' the team wrote.
'As a team we cannot condone online abuse and urge all fans of this sport we love to be kind and respectful.' The next race is in Monaco this weekend.

Kohli's Bengaluru fulfils IPL dream
Batting great Virat Kohli fulfilled an 18-year dream of winning an IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after they beat Punjab Kings by six runs in yesterday's final in Ahmedabad. Kohli's 43 from 35 balls at the top of the order set up Bengaluru for an imposing total of 190-9 which was one big blow too many for a Punjab side that battled until the end, finishing on 184-7. More than 91,000 fans packed into the 132,000-capacity stadium, a sea of Bengaluru's red and Kohli's jersey number 18 dominating the stands as chants of 'Kohli, Kohli' rang out. They celebrated noisily when Kohli and RCB clinched victory for the first time in the 18 years of the IPL, their three previous finals having all ended in defeat. The 36-year-old Kohli, one of India's all-time greats in all formats of the game, collapsed on the ground after the win and then got up to be hugged by his teammates as the crowd celebrated their hero. 'This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team, it's been 18 long years,' said Kohli. 'I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. 'I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled. 'I have stayed loyal to this team, no matter what. My heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore and this is the team I'll play for till the last day I play the IPL.' Punjab put up a feisty response to the Bengaluru total but faltered in their chase after left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya took 2-17 from his four overs. Shashank Singh hit a valiant 61 not out and finished with three sixes and a four off Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood who defended 29 runs in the final over. Australia's Glenn ‘Big Show' Maxwell calls time on ODIs
Explosive Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell called time on his one-day international career yesterday, but will continue in Twenty20 cricket with his eye on next year's World Cup. The 36-yearold, who played 149 ODIs, blasting 3,990 runs, said he was starting to feel the physical toll of the 50- over game. ' I felt like I was letting the team d o w n a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,' said Maxwell, who was nicknamed 'Big Show' for his all-action entertaining style of play. 'I had a good chat with (chair of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. 'We talked about the 2027 (50- over) World Cup and I said to him: 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'. 'I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.' His last game was Australia's Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to India in early March, after which fellow veteran Steve Smith also quit the 50-over format. The mercurial Maxwell's strike rate of 126.70 is the second highest in ODI cricket where he has crunched four hundreds and 23 half-centuries. His rate of scoring is second only to West Indian heavy hitter Andre Russell, and Maxwell has also taken 77 wickets with his off-spin. Perhaps his most memorable innings was at the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai, when he was batting with Australia reeling at 91-7, chasing 293 to win. In a high-pressure situation and battling severe cramp in searing heat, Maxwell took control, slamming 201 from just 128 balls to take his team to victory. He scored 179 of those runs in an unbroken 202 partnership with Pat Cummins, who contributed just 12 after coming at number nine. Piastri triumphs in Spanish GP
Oscar Piastri drove with exemplary calm and control in a torrid race yesterday to beat rival and teammate Lando Norris as McLaren claimed a first Spanish Grand Prix victory since 2005 with a resounding 1-2 triumph. The 24-year-old Australian came home 2.4 seconds clear of Norris to extend his lead in the drivers' championship to 10 points with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finishing third after a dramatic finale. Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull went for a three-stop strategy that resulted in him losing third place in the final laps before being handed a 10-second penalty for crashing into Mercedes' George Russell who finished fourth. It was Piastri's fifth win of the season and the seventh win of his career – and his eighth consecutive podium finish for McLaren, a feat that had only been achieved before by threetime champion Ayrton Senna and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Nico Hulkenberg was fifth, from 15th on the grid, for Sauber ahead of Hamilton in a Ferrari, Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. It's been a superb weekend.' Monaco winner Norris started second but ceded his position to Verstappen on the first lap before battling back to follow his teammate home. 'Oscar drove a very good race today,' said Norris. 'I didn't quite have the pace to match him. We gave it our best shot. It's a long race and anything could have happened at the end of the race. 'We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better.'
