In U.K., Goyal slams Opposition for criticising Indian government overseas
In the U.K. for a conference, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal criticised the Opposition for criticising the government overseas. Mr. Goyal was speaking at a discussion at the Science Museum as part of the India Global Forum 2025.
The Minister, who spent much of his time at the forum discussing the recently announced India-U.K. trade deal, commended the U.K. Labour Party for not backtracking on any commitments made to the Indian side by the Conservative Party, which was in power until early July 2024 and oversaw the majority of the trade negotiations with New Delhi.
'I must commend the current government for having committed to me well before your election, encouraging me to close the deal with the previous government,' Mr. Goyal said, adding that this represented the strength of British democracy.
'I'd like to commend both your political parties for that maturity that they have shown. I wish we had an Opposition equally mature who wouldn't come to your land... and to Oxford University... and run down his own nation,' Mr. Goyal said to laughter from the audience.
Mr. Goyal was presumably referring to a talk by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at the University of Cambridge in 2023, in which he said that Indian democracy was under threat.

9,000 undertrials released through Maharashtra's legal aid model: CM
1 2 Nagpur: Around 9,000 undertrial prisoners, nearly 45% of the 20,000 aided so far, were released through a pioneering legal aid initiative launched under chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in 2018. The first-of-its-kind model in the country, this effort has since been adopted by the central govt and is now being expanded nationwide with dedicated funding, a statement released by the govt says. Conceived as a response to the disproportionately high number of undertrials in Indian jails, the initiative focuses on providing structured legal assistance to inmates who often remain incarcerated due to lack of representation or inability to afford bail. As per the Prison Statistics India Report 2021, over 77% of inmates in India are undertrials, with an average jail occupancy rate of 130%. "This effort began with a clear objective, to deliver justice to those trapped in the system for no fault other than poverty or lack of support," said Fadnavis, highlighting the need for equity within the criminal justice framework. These professionals assist prisoners in preparing legal documents, understanding court procedures, and securing effective legal representation. Fly back via Jordan: Embassy to students stranded in Israel

The Indian embassy in Israel has advised them, especially those at universities in central Israel, to to register themselves and move out of the country through Jordan. "The students will have to travel to the Israel-Jordan border. From there, they will have to reach the airport and fly out from there," said Akash Panja, who is pursuing research in medicinal chemistry at Ariel University, Israel. While Panja and his wife have decided to stay back and wait for the situation to improve, students who faced the war-like situation for the first time are looking at ways to move out. Abir Mukhopadhyay, a research scholar from Asansol, is stranded in Rehovot. He is pursuing his post-doctoral research at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Earlier this week, when Iran dropped missiles in Rehovot, it destroyed a number of laboratories, including those catering to cardiac regeneration and cancer research. "We are glued to the television now and following the developments there. We want him back in India now. We are talking to him multiple times during the day. He told us that the MEA is reaching out to students for evacuation," said Subhashis Mukhopadhyay, father of Abir. "We have sent a letter to the Indian govt, and Nabanna is also intervening to expedite the process," he said. "I am confused with the developments. India Kick-Starts Process To Build 5th Generation Stealth Fighter Jet
New Delhi: India has kick-started the process to implement an ambitious project to develop a fifth generation stealth fighter jet to boost its air power. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an entity that operates under the defence ministry, has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for developing prototypes of the aircraft. Under the project, the government plans to build five prototypes of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). India has been working on the ambitious AMCA project to develop the medium weight deep penetration fighter jet with advanced stealth features to bolster its air power capability. AMCA along with the Tejas light combat aircraft are planned to be the mainstays of the Indian Air Force. The ADA said the aim of the EOI is to shortlist Indian companies (owned and controlled by resident Indian citizens) who are technically capable of building the AMCA prototypes. In an official note, it said the applicant may be a single company, joint venture or a consortium of companies. It said reputed Indian companies having experience in the aerospace and defence sector with capability to absorb the design of AMCA will be shortlisted for the project. The shortlisted entity must possess the capability of setting up a manufacturing facility for series production of the aircraft, it said. The duration of the contract for development, prototyping, flight test and certification of AMCA shall not exceed eight years from the effective date of contract, the ADA said.
