Tennis-Alcaraz joins list of marquee withdrawals from Canadian Open
The 22-year-old won the Italian Open, French Open and Queen's Club titles before Sinner brought his 24-match winning streak to a halt at the All England Club earlier this month.
"After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year," the five-times Grand Slam champion wrote on social media on Monday.
"I have small muscle issues and need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and my fans in Canada I am very sorry, I will see you next year."
The U.S. Open tune-up event will now be without four of the world's top six men's players after Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper also opted out.
World number one Sinner said he needed to prioritise his health, number five Draper is out with an arm injury and number six Djokovic is dealing with a groin problem that he sustained during his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals.
The Canadian Open starts on Sunday and runs until August 7.
The U.S. Open begins on August 24.

Trump-owned courses to host PGA Tour, LIV events in 2026
COURSES owned by President Donald Trump will be hosting events on both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf for the first time in the same year in 2026. LIV Golf has announced it will return to Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C. in Sterling, Va., next year. The Saudi Arabia-backed tour has had an event on a Trump-owned course every year since its inception in 2022. It last held an event at the Trump National Golf Club in 2023. The 2026 event, scheduled for May 8-10, will be one of 14 events on the tour. The PGA Tour, meanwhile, has scheduled an event at Trump National Doral, just outside Miami, according to Sports Business Journal. The tournament is expected to be played April 30-May 3, which slots in three weeks following the Masters and two weeks ahead of the PGA Championship. Per SBJ, the tournament could be a signature event that includes a $20 million purse. Both LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have a history of hosting events at Doral. LIV tournaments were played there for the first four years of its existence, 2022 to 2025, before the circuit didn't return to the Blue Monster this year. That opened the door for the PGA Tour to return to Doral and add to its 54-year history of events there. The last one was the 2016 World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. - Reuters

Antonio leaves West Ham after contract not renewed
JAMAICA striker Michail Antonio has left West Ham United after his contract was not renewed at the end of last season, the Premier League club said on Thursday. The 35-year-old was involved a serious road accident in December when his car hit a tree on the way home from training, breaking his thigh bone in four places, and he did not play for West Ham again. Antonio joined the London club from Nottingham Forest in 2015 and made 323 appearances, scoring 83 goals to become West Ham's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League. 'Michail will always be a much-loved and respected member of the West Ham United family. As has been the case since December, the Club will continue to support and assist him in his ongoing rehabilitation, offering him access to training, facilities and medical care if needed,' West Ham said in a statement. 'Dialogue continues over his future involvement with the Club in an alternative capacity - including one that would enable others to benefit from his experience and leadership qualities - and he will forever hold a special place in our 130-year history.' Antonio helped West Ham win the Europa Conference League in 2023, ending their 43-year wait for major silverware. Antonio made his competitive action to return in June as a substitute for Jamaica in a CONCACAF Gold Cup game against Guatemala. Arteta calls Arsenal's defending ‘naive' after Villarreal loss
ARSENAL were naive in their defending and paid a painful price, manager Mikel Arteta said after his side's 3-2 friendly defeat against Villarreal left them with back-to-back pre-season losses.
