The big fat 'fake' Indian wedding - Gen Z's latest party trend
Dazzling lights, glittering outfits, Bollywood hits, a lavish spread of food and an atmosphere soaked in celebration. Everything feels extravagant, emotional and larger than life.
Now imagine all of that without the bride and groom. No pheras (a Hindu marriage ritual where the couple takes seven rounds around a sacred fire), no relatives, no tearful farewells. Just the party.
Welcome to the world of fake weddings - a rising trend in Indian cities where people gather to enjoy the wedding party, minus the actual marriage.
These ticketed events, organised by hotels, clubs and companies, are designed purely for fun and promise to offer the full experience of a wedding party without any stress, rituals or responsibilities. Simply put, it's a wedding-themed party night.
Over the past few weeks, fake weddings have been making a splash in big cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The attendees are usually young people looking to enjoy a night out with friends, indulging in the drama and fun of a traditional Indian wedding without the attendant pressures.
Last week, we attended one such curated event in Delhi - a fake sangeet (a sangeet is a night of music and dance usually held a few days before the wedding).
At the event, held at a plush club, the vibe was electric: women twirled in sequinned saris and lehengas (long skirts and blouses), men showed up in tailored kurtas and ethnic jackets. A traditional dhol drummer led the crowd to the dance floor and tequila-filled gol gappas (a popular Indian street snack) made the rounds.
Shivangi Sareen, who attended an event like this for the first time, found it "amazing".
"At family weddings, there's so much pressure - the rules around dressing up, the judgement [from relatives]. But here, it's just fun," she said. "Especially because we got to do it all with our friends. We decided our outfits the day before and got ready together."
Ticket prices typically start at around 1,500 rupees ($17; £13) and can go up to 15,000 rupees or more, depending on the venue and facilities. Shivangi and her friends paid 10,000 rupees per couple to attend.
"I wouldn't mind spending this once a month. The whole experience was totally worth it."
Sharad Madan, owner of a restaurant which hosted the event, says the trend underscores that novelty is key in the hospitality sector.
"We have to keep doing something new for our patrons," he said.
It cost them around a million rupees to plan and organise the event, Mr Madan says, and the team expected to make double that through ticket sales. But it's not just about profits, he says.
"It's about engagement. Even if it doesn't give me the same kind of returns, I would still do it because our patrons want something different."
Kaushal Chanani, co-founder of 8Club events which hosted a fake wedding party attended by 2,000 people in Bengaluru last month, says that the inspiration for fake weddings came from young Indians living abroad.
"People from the diaspora would gather and dance to Bollywood music, dress in ethnic [traditional] clothes and enjoy the evening," he said. "This is the idea we followed as well."
The response to the Bengaluru event, held at a five-star hotel, was "overwhelming", he says. It encouraged them to plan a similar event in Delhi - which was sold out - and they started getting queries from event organisers in other cities such as Jaipur, Kolkata and Lucknow.
"We now give out our standard operating procedure (SOP) to people who are interested," he says. "It is a guide on how to create the experience, market it and make it profitable."
However, not all fake weddings follow the same script.
Third Place, an experience-based start-up, recently hosted a sober sangeet in Bengaluru - no alcohol, just a themed celebration.
"We divided attendees into groom and bride's teams and organised games like charades and guessing who the relative is from a stereotype," said CEO Anurag Pandey.
There were dhol drums, a grand welcome for all guests and even astrology-themed games. Alcohol was deliberately left out.
"Sometimes booze takes away from the experience," Mr Pandey said. "We wanted to do more than just a pub night or a regular takeover. We wanted to showcase the spirit of Indian weddings."
Commentators say the popularity of these events reflects young people's growing desire to find reasons to celebrate.
"People need a hook of some kind… an occasion to celebrate. And there's no better setting than a wedding, which brings together all the elements of fun," says writer and social commentator Santosh Desai.
"It's the pinnacle of enjoyment - especially when it's free from the stress that accompanies real weddings."
He also points out that these events give people a reason to re-wear expensive wedding outfits bought in the past.
So, are such events here to stay?
Event planner Vijay Arora, founder of Delhi-based Touchwood Events, believes fake weddings are currently a fad - but one with potential.
"Gen Z definitely wants to be part of such celebrations," he said.
"If it emerges as a new market category then it can be a major game changer since the scale will increase - which eventually amps up business opportunities for the entire industry."
India's wedding industry is estimated to be worth around $130bn, according to investment advisory firm Wright Research.
While the sector is booming, there are constraints. Most weddings take place during the cooler months - typically between November and March - and often at auspicious times, while the monsoon season (June to August) is considered off-season.
With venues free, vendors available and people constantly chasing experiences, fake weddings could step in to fill the gap if the trend holds.
Mr Arora says he was surprised by the rise of fake weddings.
"But it also helps in understanding that such events are something that we want to celebrate or be a part of. Even if we can't attend the real events our friends or family host, we still want to experience them by joining these fake ones."
However, not every guest walks away thrilled.
Srishti Sharma, a 23-year-old Bengaluru-based marketing professional, said she was underwhelmed by the only fake wedding she attended.
"I've lived away from home for a few years now and I really missed attending a wedding," she said.
"The biggest plus was not having nagging relatives telling you 'you're next in line to get married'."
Ms Sharma and her friends spent hours picking outfits, but the event fell short.
"They began with EDM and switched to Bollywood only after two hours," she said.
"We expected wedding food but got pizza and fries - no dessert, just alcohol. The decor was basic and felt lazy."
Some have criticised the events, saying they could come across as trivialising traditional Indian events and values.
But Vidhi Kapoor, who attended the fake sangeet in Delhi, disagrees.
"It might have been offensive had people been asked to dress up like a bride or groom but here it's just a party, we should take it in high spirits," she said.

Stella Rimington, Britain's first female MI5 spy chief, dies at 90
LONDON (AP) — Stella Rimington, the first female chief of Britain's MI5 intelligence agency and later a successful thriller writer, has died, her family said Monday. She was 90. The first woman to head a U.K. intelligence agency, Rimington was the inspiration for Judi Dench's portrayal of MI6 chief M in seven James Bond films. Her family said in a statement that Rimington died on Sunday 'surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath.' MI5's current director-general, Ken McCallum, said that 'as the first avowed female head of any intelligence agency in the world, Dame Stella broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership.' Born in London in 1935, Rimington studied English at Edinburgh University and later worked as an archivist. She was living in India with her diplomat husband in the mid-1960s when she was recruited by MI5, Britain's domestic security service, as a part-time clerk and typist in its New Delhi office. She joined the agency full-time after moving back to London in 1969 and rose through the ranks, overcoming rules that kept the most prestigious roles, such as recruiting and running agents, for men only. She worked in each of MI5's operational branches — counterespionage, counterterrorism and counter-subversion — at a time when MI5's work included sniffing out Soviet spies, infiltrating Northern Ireland militant groups and, controversially, spying on leftists, trade union leaders and other alleged subversives. Rimington acknowledged in 2001 that the organization 'may have been a bit over-enthusiastic' in some of its snooping on domestic targets during the Cold War. Rimington was appointed MI5 director-general in 1992, the first head of the organization to be named in public, and her tenure saw the secretive organization become slightly more open. Dench's first appearance as M, a role formerly played by men, was in 'GoldenEye' in 1995. The film's producers said the casting was inspired by Rimington's appointment. After stepping down in 1996, Rimington was made a dame, the female equivalent of a knight, by Queen Elizabeth II. Rimington later published a memoir, 'Open Secret' — to the displeasure of the government — and a series of spy thrillers featuring fictional MI5 officer Liz Carlyle. Trump Deletes and Reposts Tweet About Sydney Sweeney Several Times
President Donald Trump has been very active on Truth Social this morning, firing off posts about everything from last week's terrible jobs report to India's oil imports. But the president's post about Sydney Sweeney and Taylor Swift had to be deleted and reposted several times to correct spelling errors on Monday. And it speaks to the chaos going on behind the scenes as the president posts to social media when he's supposed to be running the country. Sweeney is currently at the center of an online debate about an ad for clothing company American Eagle. The actress talks about genetics in an ad that ends with a homophone-based joke about jeans and genes. Some people see the ad as a dog whistle to racists (including many of the racists themselves), and Trump was first asked about it on Sunday, when he learned that Sweeney is a registered Republican. The president seemed excited by the fact that a popular actress might be on his team politically and really leaned into it Monday morning with a whiny, error-riddled post that went in a few different directions on 'wokeness.' As you can see, Trump's first stab at the post about Sweeney misspelled her name as 'Sidney,' says 'flying of the shelves' rather than off the shelves, and spells the beer as Bud Lite rather than Bud Light. Miller is the brand that uses 'Lite' rather than Light. Trump deleted and reposted the screed, fixing some of the errors and expanding the section about Taylor Swift, who he claimed was booed at the Super Bowl and 'became NO LONGER HOT.' Swift was indeed booed by some people at the Super Bowl because she was there to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Swift was reportedly booed by Philadelphia Eagles fans, not because the billionaire singer has become unpopular. Trump also added a line, as you can see below, reading 'Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' The president added another line to his second post that's become extremely common in recent months: 'Thank you for your attention to this matter.' But the president deleted his post yet again, fixing his sentence about American Eagle jeans 'flying of the shelves,' without fixing the part about Bud 'Lite.' One of the questions that people often have about Trump's social media presence is how frequently he's the person actually typing it out. Trump has famously never used a computer but has previously confirmed that he's the one typing on his phone to send out many of his posts. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump said that he's often dictating tweets during the day and it's all his own typing at night after 7:00 p.m. But it's unclear whether he's stuck to that schedule. The pro-Trump documentary series Art of the Surge showed what it was like tweeting with Trump during a speech from Kamala Harris in the 2024 campaign, and it really appeared to be a team process. Trump would dictate to the assistant sitting next to him, but plenty of other people in the room contributed ideas and suggested their own versions of talking points to people who ran other accounts associated with Trump's campaign. It wasn't all celebrity nonsense on Monday morning. Trump also tried to address the fact that he fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics last week after the agency reported weak job creation numbers and revised down previous months. 'Last weeks Job's Report was RIGGED, just like the numbers prior to the Presidential Election were Rigged,' Trump wrote in a transparent lie. 'That's why, in both cases, there was massive, record setting revisions, in favor of the Radical Left Democrats. Those big adjustments were made to cover up, and level out, the FAKE political numbers that were CONCOCTED in order to make a great Republican Success look less stellar!!! I will pick an exceptional replacement. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAGA!' Trump fired Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from her nonpartisan role on Friday, and there's absolutely no evidence she did anything wrong. In fact, more than 2,000 people work at the BLS, according to CNN, and it would have been impossible for McEntarfer to significantly alter the data without the coordination of dozens, if not hundreds, of accomplices. And, again, there's no evidence she did that. Trump just shot the messenger and wants to install someone who will make it look like his economy is doing better than it is. The newly revised numbers showed the U.S. added 258,000 fewer jobs in May and June than first reported, a bad sign for the future of the economy. Trump is an agent of chaos, firing off posts about anything and everything he sees on TV. But how do we know he's mostly reacting to whatever pops up on television? Sometimes he just says as much, like when he recently said that he's seen the starvation of children in Gaza on TV. This is a man with an entire intelligence community devoted to making sure he has the best and latest information from around the world. But he is fixated on whatever might be happening on the glowing boxes of mass media around him at all times. Trump also seemed to be talking directly to the TV on Monday when he sent a few posts about Sen. Elizabeth Warren, writing, 'Ask Pocahontas the real questions, CNBC!!!' Warren was on the financial news channel to discuss Trump's firing of the BLS commissioner, pointing out that it's extremely dangerous. Warren said Trump seemed poised to 'put in some sycophant that makes the president happy,' which clearly set him off. You'd think the job of the president would require a little more attention to world affairs and less to the criticism he's hearing on TV. But obviously, this is a unique era in American history. And none of this dysfunction is going to get resolved anytime soon.

Dame Stella Rimington, the first female director general of MI5, has died
Dame Stella Rimington, who was the first female director general of MI5, has died, her family has announced. She died "surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath". Dame Stella, who was also an author, was 90. She is widely credited as the inspiration for Dame Judi Dench's M in the James Bond films. Ms Rimington was appointed director general of MI5 in 1992, taking over the following year and holding the position until she retired from the service in 1996. As the first publicly-named "spymaster", she did much to bring the service out of the shadows and explain its role to the public, including releasing historical files to the National Archives. Her appointment - announced in a brief, two-line statement with no accompanying picture - caused a media sensation, not least because she was the first woman to head any of the agencies, for which she was ill-prepared. Born Stella Whitehouse in 1935 in South Norwood, south London, she attended Edinburgh University and married diplomat John Rimington in 1963. The couple moved to India two years later when he was posted to New Delhi, and soon after, she began her 29-year career in MI5. She worked in a variety of roles, "including counter-subversion and counter-terrorism", the agency said on its website. During her time as director general, "the service took on the lead role in the fight against Irish republican terrorism," it said. In 1993, MI5 published a short booklet which, for the first time, put some facts into the public domain, while she appeared alongside then home secretary Michael Howard in an official photocall to launch it. A further step towards greater openness followed when, despite much official hand-wringing, she was given permission to deliver the prestigious BBC Dimbleby lecture on the role of the security services in a democracy. She was made a dame in the 1996 New Year's Honours list. Five years after retiring, to the fury of many of her former colleagues, her autobiography, Open Secret, was published.
