Over 7,000-page chargesheet filed in Mumbai's Mithi river desilting scam

Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of city police, probing the Rs 65.5-crore Mithi River desilting scam case, filed an over 7,000-page chargesheet in the court on Friday against two arrested accused. Eleven others named as accused in the FIR, including several BMC officials, have not been arrested yet. Two of the 13 named in the FIR lodged on May 6—Ketan Kadam (50) and Jay Joshi (49)—were arrested the same day. Investigators filed the charge sheet against Kadam and Joshi. While Joshi is out on bail, Kadam is still in the jail, said police. Kadam is associated with Ketan Vodar India LLP, while Jay Joshi is a director at Virgo Specialties Pvt Ltd. The court, where the chargesheet was filed, is yet to take cognisance of it. Both Kadam and Joshi are accused of collectively taking Rs 9 crore as commission. They acted as middlemen to secure the Mithi River cleaning tender for a contractor. The duo allegedly conspired with the accused BMC officials to ensure their contractor got the contract. On March 20 last year, the EOW constituted a special investigation team (SIT) led by joint commissioner Nishith Mishra to probe the alleged scam. There were allegations that the accused persons, contractors, middlemen, and several BMC officials connived and caused a loss of Rs 65.5 crore to the civic body by not desilting the Mithi River, submitting fake bills, and getting them cleared. While the machine cost around Rs 3.1 crore, the BMC officers named as accused allegedly changed the note sheet and asked the contractors to take it on rent. 6k farmers got Rs 24cr aid under PM Kisan Samman: Sawant

1 2 Bicholim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Saturday that so far, around 6,000 farmers in Goa have received Rs 24 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. On Aug 2, another Rs 1.2 crore will be deposited in the farmers' bank accounts, with each farmer receiving Rs 1.2 lakh by Saturday, he said. Sawant was addressing farmers at a special programme under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana at Ravindra Bhavan, Sanquelim. 'Today, while giving these farmers a dignified life, credit card facilities have been provided by which any farmer can take a loan of at least Rs 1 lakh from banks without mortgaging their farms. If any bank is refusing to give this loan to farmers, they should directly contact the divisional agriculture officer in their area or their office and get a loan for themselves,' he said. The CM said the income from Goa's horticulture sector has significantly increased. Goa is now exporting vegetables instead of importing them, which is a major achievement of this govt that respects and supports farmers. Around 16,000 farmers in Goa were registered under the Kisan credit card. However, after 10,000 cards were cancelled due to clan land issues, now only around 6,000 farmers benefit from central govt schemes, he said. He also said govt is implementing schemes to modernise and support farmers, and many are taking advantage of these schemes. Many youth are focusing on various courses in the agricultural sector, implementing various experiments in agriculture. Goa State Cooperative Bank ends wage dispute with salary hike and arrears

Panaji: The Goa State Cooperative Bank has concluded wage hike negotiations with employees, ending a dispute ongoing since Dec 2022. The bank agreed to increase the salaries of staff and officers by 5%, with arrears being released from this month onwards. The bank signed wage contracts with employees, implementing a salary revision with retrospective effect from Jan 2023 and valid until Dec 2027. The employees and officers' unions demanded a steep wage rise, and negotiations with the bank's board of directors stalled midway. 'Historically, the bank has been giving employees a 5% hike, and we agreed to keep the hike in line with the earlier practice. The bank's finances have to be protected,' said Santosh Kenkre, a chartered accountant who heads the bank's three-member administrative committee. With the term of the board of directors coming to an end, the registrar of cooperative societies appointed an administrative committee led by CA Santosh Kenkre to manage the bank, joined by CA Laxmikant Naik and senior bureaucrat Vishant Gaunekar, who assumed charge in May. 'We managed to solve the discussions in one meeting,' said Kenkre. Bank officials said the arrears of the past 31 months will be paid through a combination of shares and cash in three quarterly tranches. The staff will get 25% of the pending dues in the form of shares allotted by the bank. The balance 75% of their arrears will be disbursed with the salary for Aug, Dec, and March 2026. With the bank earning a Rs 11 crore profit in 2024–25, the committee approved a wage hike, took steps for loan recovery through court cases, and is now focusing on new digital services for customers.
