Iraq's exports $2.7B in oil to Italy in 2024

Shafaq News28-05-2025
Shafaq News/ Iraq delivered $2.68B in oil shipments to Italy in 2024, maintaining its role as a key energy supplier to the European market, official trade data showed.
The exports included 4.32 million tonnes of crude oil worth $2.44B, in addition to 435,532 tonnes of petroleum-based derivatives, which generated $242.57M.
The total reflected a modest 1% growth in value compared to 2020, indicating consistent trade volumes over the past five years.
Italy imports Iraqi oil through long-term agreements with energy firms such as Eni and Saras, which refine the crude in southern Europe, the country being one of Iraq's top European clients, alongside rising demand from other EU nations seeking to diversify supply amid geopolitical shifts.
Iraq, a founding member of OPEC, continues to depend on oil for over 90% of its government revenue. Despite production cuts under the OPEC+ agreement, Baghdad's fuel oil exports are projected to reach record highs in 2024, with total oil shipments surpassing 1.2 billion barrels globally.

Syrian government reveals plan to revive industry

Shafaq News – Damascus Amid Syria's protracted financial crisis and mounting calls to revive the economy, the Ministry of Trade announced on Thursday a multi-phase plan to restore the industrial sector's role. Deputy Minister for Industrial Affairs Mohammed Yassin Hourieh told Shafaq News that the sector continues to face three main obstacles, led by prolonged power shortages that force factories to rely on costly private generators, inflating production costs and undermining competitiveness. Short-term measures include rehabilitating power plants, securing fuel, and expanding renewable energy projects — particularly solar — supported by soft loans and customs exemptions. Longer-term plans focus on strategic energy ventures with allied states to modernize infrastructure. Hourieh said access to raw materials has eased following tariff restructuring and reduced import duties, but financing remains a challenge. To address this, the government is promoting leasing mechanisms, an industrial development fund for small and micro projects, and a rural industries fund through public and private banks. He also cited Decree 112 of 2025, which created a reconstruction fund offering interest-free loans for infrastructure and basic services. 'Restarting idle factories is a priority,' he stressed, highlighting partnerships with the private sector and incentives for Syrian expatriates. Official data show 945 projects worth $220M licensed in the first half of 2025, with 80 projects worth $4.5M already completed. Hourieh further pointed to Decree 114 of 2025, which grants broad exemptions, including lifting customs and financial fees on industrial machinery, construction equipment, and new medical facilities. The decree also provides full tax relief for agricultural and livestock ventures, and 80% tax reductions for export-oriented industries, pharmaceuticals, recycling, and environmentally friendly projects. 'The challenges are immense, but determination is stronger,' he said, emphasizing that recovery depends on government support, private-sector initiative, and public backing for local production.

Iraq exports nearly one million barrels of oil to India in July

Baghdad ( – India's Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) revealed on Thursday that the country's oil imports from Iraq reached 993,000 barrels per day in July. At this rate, Iraq maintained its position as India's second-largest oil supplier, following Russia, which continued to be the country's largest oil exporter. Russia exported 1.8 million barrels per day to India, accounting for 34 percent of the country's total imports of 4.44 million barrels per day. Iraqi crude oil supplies to India fell by four percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Between January and June 2025, Iraq's crude oil shipments to India averaged 860,000 barrels per day, compared to 900,000 barrels per day in 2024. India's imports of Iraqi oil fell by 28,000 barrels per day, decreasing from 959,000 barrels per day in May 2024 to 931,000 barrels per day. In early 2025, Indian refineries switched to non-Russian oil after the government informed them about US sanctions weeks before they were publicized. Western countries, particularly the United States, have imposed tighter sanctions on Moscow, disrupting global oil commerce and forcing customers of cheap Russian oil to find new means to sustain their purchases.
