Duke star Cooper Flagg wins Naismith Trophy
April 6 - Duke star Cooper Flagg won his second major award in two days when he received the Naismith Trophy as the national player of the year on Sunday.
One day earlier, Flagg won the Wooden Award.
Flagg became just the fourth freshman to win the Naismith Trophy, which is presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The others are Texas' Kevin Durant (2007), Kentucky's Anthony Davis (2012) and Duke's Zion Williamson (2019).
The same quartet are the only freshmen to win the Wooden Award.
Flagg's latest award was announced in San Antonio, one day after the Blue Devils lost 70-67 to Houston in the Final Four.
"This is an incredible honor and I am truly grateful for the recognition," Flagg said. "This whole year, this (NCAA) tournament, has gone by so fast. It's been a blur and an incredible year. I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates, Coach (Jon) Scheyer, the rest of the staff and everyone who had me ready to go every single night. They believed in me and let me be me out there on the court."
Flagg emerged as the favorite for the award over the second half of the season. He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 37 games.
The other finalists were Auburn's Johni Broome, Florida's Walter Clayton Jr. and Purdue's Braden Smith.
Among Flagg's other accolades are being named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as well as being a consensus first-team All-American.
Flagg is expected to be the No. 1 choice in the NBA draft if he chooses to enter his name.
Rick Pitino was named the Werner Ladder Coach of the Year award after leading St. John's to a 31-5 record in his second season at the school.
The 31 wins matched the school mark reached twice in the mid-1980s.
The Red Storm received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before exiting in the second round with a loss to Arkansas. The first-round victory over Omaha was the school's first NCAA tourney win since 2000.
"I'm truly honored to be the recipient of the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year award, especially with the incredible coaching of the other finalists this past season," the 72-year-old Pitino said. "I want to thank my players and coaches for making this possible after a historic season for St. John's Basketball. I am also grateful to the Atlanta Tipoff Club and the Naismith Awards selection committee for this prestigious honor."
The other finalists were Auburn's Bruce Pearl, Houston's Kelvin Sampson and Scheyer.
Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner won Naismith Defensive Player of the Year honors. The senior blocked 93 shots this season while winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors for the fourth straight season.
Kalkbrenner also averaged 19.2 points and 8.7 rebounds and shot 65.3 percent from the field this season.
"It is a huge honor to be named Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and I am most appreciative to my teammates, coaches and the Atlanta Tipoff Club for recognizing our success," Kalkbrenner said.
Houston's Joseph Tugler and two Tennessee players -- Jahmai Mashack and Zakai Zeigler -- were the other finalists.

June 4 - Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker homered as Lance McCullers Jr. outdueled Paul Skenes, helping the Houston Astros defeat the host Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday night. McCullers (1-1) pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven on 96 pitches. He registered his first victory since returning last month from a two-year injury absence following flexor tendon surgery. He most recently won a game on Sept. 21, 2022. The Astros prevailed for the third time in their past four games while the Pirates lost for the third time in four contests. Houston posted its second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season while Pittsburgh was blanked for the 10th time. Skenes struck out eight on 99 pitches but yielded a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh to Walker, who belted his eighth of the season over the left field wall. Houston added two more runs in the top of the ninth when Paredes hit his 12th home run 403 feet and past the left field wall off Pirates reliever Dennis Santana. Pittsburgh tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth when Isiah Kiner-Falefa led off with a single. After Oneil Cruz reached on a fielder's-choice grounder, Cruz appeared to steal second safely, but he overran the bag and was tagged out by second baseman Jose Altuve. Kiner-Falefa collected two of Pittsburgh's four hits. Before ethe game, the Pirates reinstated second baseman Nick Gonzales (ankle) from the 60-day injured list. Gonzales started and went 1-for-3, playing for the first time since breaking his ankle in the season opener. Texans QB C.J. Stroud (shoulder) limited at OTAs
June 3 - Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud did not throw at Houston's organized team activities Tuesday as he deals with minor shoulder tightness, according to multiple reports. Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley recently said that he is not bothered by Stroud's lack of passing reps. "Yeah, he's locked in every step of the way. No concerns whatsoever," Caley told reporters Friday. "Everybody has a specific routine relative to their own routine, specific to whatever. Whether it's football, whether it's athletic training, et cetera, and he's doing a great job and he's out here and he's working." Stroud, 23, is entering his third season. He crafted an impressive debut season with a passer rating of 100.8 and 4,108 yards, both the third-best in NFL history for a rookie. He was the first Texans player to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Last season, Stroud came back down to earth a bit. His yards per game dropped from 273.9 in 2023 to 219.2 in 2024, and his interception total jumped from five to 12. In two seasons with the Texans, Stroud is 19-13 with 43 touchdowns, 7,835 yards and a 93.7 passer rating. Police reveal new details about man who sent MLB star chilling death threats
Police have revealed that an overseas bettor who was intoxicated was the person behind the death threats directed at Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and his family. The Houston Police Department have not publicly identified the individual, or their location, with no charged being filed as of Monday in the case. A spokesperson for the police department stated a man admitted to gambling on an Astros game and lost money in a contest McCullers pitched. The man's apology had been sent to McCullers while the case remains open while charges are considered, per ESPN. McCullers' start against the Cincinnati Reds on May 10 was the impetus for the drunken messages. The 31-year-old only got one out but gave up three hits and seven earned runs before being yanked. The messages of 'find my kids and murder them' were sent later about his second appearance this season, part of his return to the mound after more than two years away from baseball year recovering from arm surgery. 'I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with,' McCullers told reporters after his case was publicized. McCullers' 5-year-old daughter did overhear his wife, Kara, talking about the threats. 'She asked me when I came home, "Daddy, like, what is threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?"' the pitcher added. McCullers added 24-hour security to his home after the threats were made. It is unknown if the security has been toned down after the police discovery. Houston has won every game that McCullers has started since that performance against the Reds.
