Duke star Cooper Flagg wins Naismith Trophy
One day earlier, Flagg won the Wooden Award.
Flagg became just the fourth freshman to win the Naismith Trophy, which is presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The others are Texas' Kevin Durant (2007), Kentucky's Anthony Davis (2012) and Duke's Zion Williamson (2019).
The same quartet are the only freshmen to win the Wooden Award.
Flagg's latest award was announced in San Antonio, one day after the Blue Devils lost 70-67 to Houston in the Final Four.
"This is an incredible honor and I am truly grateful for the recognition," Flagg said. "This whole year, this (NCAA) tournament, has gone by so fast. It's been a blur and an incredible year. I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates, Coach (Jon) Scheyer, the rest of the staff and everyone who had me ready to go every single night. They believed in me and let me be me out there on the court."
Flagg emerged as the favorite for the award over the second half of the season. He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 37 games.
The other finalists were Auburn's Johni Broome, Florida's Walter Clayton Jr. and Purdue's Braden Smith.
Among Flagg's other accolades are being named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as well as being a consensus first-team All-American.
Flagg is expected to be the No. 1 choice in the NBA draft if he chooses to enter his name.
Rick Pitino was named the Werner Ladder Coach of the Year award after leading St. John's to a 31-5 record in his second season at the school.
The 31 wins matched the school mark reached twice in the mid-1980s.
The Red Storm received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before exiting in the second round with a loss to Arkansas. The first-round victory over Omaha was the school's first NCAA tourney win since 2000.
"I'm truly honored to be the recipient of the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year award, especially with the incredible coaching of the other finalists this past season," the 72-year-old Pitino said. "I want to thank my players and coaches for making this possible after a historic season for St. John's Basketball. I am also grateful to the Atlanta Tipoff Club and the Naismith Awards selection committee for this prestigious honor."
The other finalists were Auburn's Bruce Pearl, Houston's Kelvin Sampson and Scheyer.
Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner won Naismith Defensive Player of the Year honors. The senior blocked 93 shots this season while winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors for the fourth straight season.
Kalkbrenner also averaged 19.2 points and 8.7 rebounds and shot 65.3 percent from the field this season.
"It is a huge honor to be named Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and I am most appreciative to my teammates, coaches and the Atlanta Tipoff Club for recognizing our success," Kalkbrenner said.
Houston's Joseph Tugler and two Tennessee players -- Jahmai Mashack and Zakai Zeigler -- were the other finalists.

August 20 - The Houston Texans signed veteran long snapper Blake Ferguson on Wednesday. The other long snapper on the current 90-man roster is undrafted rookie Austin Brinkman. The Miami Dolphins selected Ferguson in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU. Ferguson, 28, played in five games last season before being placed on the non-football injury list. The Dolphins released him in May. Ferguson appeared in all 67 of Miami's games from 2020-23 and has a fumble recovery and eight career tackles. His brother, Reid Ferguson, is entering his ninth season as the long snapper of the Buffalo Bills. The Texans waived tight end Tre' McKitty, 26, in a corresponding move. Revealed: The brutal sledge AFL star copped before he uttered anti-gay slur that looks set to end his season
Adelaide Crows star Izak Rankine is facing a five-game ban from the AFL following an on-field homophobic slur directed at a Collingwood player - and now the sledge that triggered the midfielder can be revealed. Magpies recruit Dan Houston - who joined the club from Port Adelaide on a six-year deal - reportedly sledged Rankine in relation to an incident in which the ex-Power player knocked him out last season in a Showdown derby clash. Houston received a five-week ban for concussing Rankine with a high bump last August, which ended his time with Port Adelaide on a sour note. It is understood the Crows will use the incident in their submission to the AFL, adamant Rankine was fired up by Houston. The player Rankine later targeted with his anti-gay slur has not been identified by the AFL, but it is not believed to be Houston. Adelaide - who will be minor premiers if they beat North Melbourne this weekend - have also told the AFL missing finals games should carry more weight than missing home-and-away clashes. They also believe a three-game ban is appropriate. Rankine is said to be shattered, with the likely suspension expected to end his premiership dream for 2025. Former Crows coach Scott Camporeale has no doubt the club will be disappointed in Rankine's conduct. 'We (football identities) are supposed to be standing up for these things,' Camporeale told Adelaide radio station 5AA. 'They are well-educated these players... they are the best-educated group in the country around race, gender and all those things. 'And (yet) we continually keep having to go through these scenarios.' Camporeale added that Rankine's teammates and coaches would feel let down by the 25-year-old. 'Matthew Nicks would be pretty disappointed as a senior coach,' he said. 'He is a September player, Izak Rankine. He's the No.1 score-involvement player for the Crows. 'Can they still win it? I think they can, it's never just one player. (But) most of them would be pretty disappointed because they know how integral he is to the team.' Crows club legend Rory Sloane was equally frustrated, declaring his opposition to the club's attempts to get the suspension downgraded on Channel Nine's Footy Classified. 'It's laziness coming up with an excuse like that, isn't it?', he said of Adelaide's defence that Rankine was targeted. Ominously for Rankine, West Coast's Jack Graham was banned for four games in July after making a homophobic remark to a GWS player. In April last year, Port Adelaide's Jeremy Finlayson banned for three games and then Gold Coast's Wil Powell was suspended for five matches after they both directed homophobic slurs at opponents.

Tigers dominate all facets of 10-0 win over Astros
August 19 - Trey Sweeney clubbed a three-run home run, Jack Flaherty tossed seven strong innings and the host Detroit Tigers silenced the Houston Astros 10-0 on Monday. Sweeney also had a triple and scored two runs. Riley Greene blasted a two-run homer and Wenceel Perez and Colt Keith delivered solo shots. Keith finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Kerry Carpenter added a two-run triple in the opener of a three-game series. Flaherty (7-12) allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out nine in his longest outing of the season. Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti (1-4) gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. Christian Walker had two of Houston's five hits. Houston's best chance to score against Flaherty came in the first inning. Carlos Correa had a one-out double and moved to third on Jose Altuve's bunt single. Walker drew a two-out walk but Victor Caratini flied out to leave the bases loaded. Detroit loaded the bases with no outs in the second. Spencer Torkelson walked, Perez was hit by a pitch and Dillon Dingler hit a long single off the left field wall. Sweeney then struck out and Arrighetti induced Javier Baez to bounce into a double play. Perez broke the deadlock in the fourth during a 10-pitch at-bat. He just missed a homer on a foul ball before smashing an Arrighetti cutter over the right-center-field wall. Perez became the ninth Tigers player to reach double digits in homers. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Keith banged a one-out double off the wall and Gleyber Torres walked. Then, in consecutive one-pitch at-bats, Carpenter ripped a triple to right to bring home both runners and Greene clobbered his 29th homer to right-center. Sweeney had a leadoff triple the next inning and scored on Keith's sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Detroit scored three more runs off Tayler Scott in the seventh. Torkelson and Dingler reached on singles before Sweeney ambushed a splitter for a 9-0 lead. Keith followed with another homer. --Field Level Media
