Shuttlers Eogene, Ling Ching bow out of Canada Open
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's challenge has ended in the Canada Open with the exits of shuttlers Eogene Ewe and Wong Ling Ching.
On Friday, Eogene went down 6-21, 21-11, 9-21 to Victor Lai of Canada in the quarter-finals of the men's singles event in Markham.
National women's singles player Ling Ching fought hard but it was not good enough to beat Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Linh and went down 21-17, 20-22, 15-21 in the last eight.

LTdL 2025 promises to be one of the most competitive in recent years

This year's edition will be one of the most competitive in recent years with the confirmation of three WorldTeams (WT) and eight ProTeams (PT). National Sports Council (NSC) deputy director general Arrifin Ghani said that although there will be no summit finishes he is confident the competition will stay fierce, with every team vying for stage wins. "With a total of nine teams who have raced in the Grand Tours, we can expect strong and exciting competition each day - from Stage 1 in Langkawi to the final Stage 8 at the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC)," said Arrifin during the team announcement press conference. "Although there will be no Hors Categorie climb to Genting Highlands for the second year running, Stage 3 (Gerik-Pasir Puteh) and Stage 5 (Temerloh-Fraser's Hill) will be the key battlegrounds in the fight for the overall individual classification and King of the Mountains jersey. "In fact, the battle is expected to continue until the final days, especially with Stage 7 featuring the longest distance of 214.6km from Melaka to Medini followed by the final stage covering 180km from Tangkak to KLCC." The three confirmed WorldTeams are XDS Astana Team (Kazakhstan), Team Picnic PostNL (Holland), previously known as DSM-Firmenich PostNL, and Cofidis (France). A total of 22 teams will compete in the eight-day race, including 10 continental teams and the Malaysian national team. According to Arrifin, six of the eight ProTeams also race in the three Grand Tours – Total Energies, Tudor Pro Cycling Team, and Uno-X Mobility (Tour de France); VF Group–Bardiani CSF-Faizane and Team Polti VisitMalta (Giro d'Italia); and Burgos-BH (Vuelta a Espana). The two other ProTeams are newcomers Unibet Tietama Rockets (France) and Team Solution Tech-Vini Fantini (Italy). Adding to the excitement will be 10 continental teams, including local outfits Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) and Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) alongside the Malaysian national team. Arrifin is optimistic that every team will field their best riders and that the 2025 LTdL will remain a major attraction for cycling enthusiasts. 'Although teams have yet to submit their full six-man rider lists, we believe LTdL 2025 will still capture the attention of many cycling enthusiasts due to its high level of competition across Asia. "In fact, the organisers themselves are eagerly awaiting the finalised team rosters. From those names, we can gauge each team's strategy and objectives - whether they're targeting stage wins, overall individual standings, team classifications, King of the Mountains or the sprint jersey," he added. Also returning to heat up the competition in this Asian ProSeries race are seven familiar continental teams - Nusantara-BYC (Indonesia), HKSI Pro Cycling Team (Hong Kong), Aisan Racing Team (Japan), KSPO Professional (South Korea), and St George Continental Cycling Team (Australia), along with 7Eleven Cliqq Roadbike (the Philippines), Thailand Continental Cycling Team (Thailand), and new entrants Chengdu DYC Cycling Team (China).

T-shirts, medals for those who complete Penang bridge run

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said PBIM has grown to become one of the most anticipated marathons in the region and in Penang's sports tourism calendar. 'PBIM brings together tens of thousands of runners, supporters, family members, and businesses, turning a single morning of sport into a weekend of large-scale activity that boosts the state economy.' He said registration places were filling up quickly. 'Our target is 25,000 participants and so far, we have over 16,000 registrations,' Wong said during a press conference at Komtar. Also present were Ikea Batu Kawan local marketing manager Vivienne Low, Klippa deputy commercial manager Jo Saw and Aspen trade divisional director Janice Lim. Wong said the marathon traversed Penang Second Bridge, making PBIM the longest bridge run in the region. 'Running across that bridge, surrounded by water, wind and sunrise, is an experience. 'Which is why we feel every journey needs to be honoured. 'This year, we are proud to announce that finishers in all categories – Full Marathon (42.195km), Half Marathon (21.1km) and 10km – will receive a finisher T-shirt and specially designed finisher medal. 'Whether you are wearing it for your next run or just as a reminder of what you have accomplished, we want it to be something that runners are proud to put on,' he added. Wong said medals would be the same for finishers of all three categories. 'For many runners, that T-shirt and medal are more than a souvenir; they symbolise the achievement of a personal milestone.' He said pre-run events were being organised by Penang Forward Sports Club. 'There will be four held before Dec 14. Two have been held and two more will be conducted in the months to come. 'The four pre-run sessions are held at different locations on the island and mainland, ensuring greater accessibility and convenience for participants. 'This event is free and runners can choose to join either the 5km or 10km categories.' He said the sessions would help runners boost their stamina, get familiar with race conditions and adjust to Penang's weather and routes. Wong said last year's PBIM attracted over 23,000 participants. That translated into thousands of hotel bookings, restaurant visits, retail spending, and digital impressions online showcasing Penang to the world, he noted. 'I see PBIM as more than a race; it is an engine for economic stimulation, a platform for cultural celebration and a movement that promotes health and unity,' Wong added. Possible permanent partnership of Fajar-Shohibul serves new threat to Malaysia

Fajar-Shohibul, who only combined last month, stunned several top pairs including Malaysia's world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to win the China Open title last month. Their impressive form has persuaded Indonesia's men's doubles coach Antonius Budi Ariantho to combine them again after the Hong Kong Open next month. Before that, Fajar will compete with his usual partner Rian Ardianto in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris and the Hong Kong tourney from Sept 9-14. Meanwhile, Rian will be tried out with Yeremia Rambitan after the tournament in Hong Kong. Initially, Fajar was combined with Shohibul after the latter's usual partner Daniel Marthin underwent knee surgery and needed time to recover. Daniel can now only fully recover and return to action next year. "I'm experimenting with a few partnerships until Daniel is able to return to competitions in January next year," said Antonius in an interview posted in the Indonesian National Badminton Association (PBSI) website. "So, from September to December, I will observe the new partnerships and try to come up with the best permanent pairings. "I want to see if Fajar-Fikri can remain consistent in high level tournaments." The reshuffle is understandable as no Indonesian men's doubles pair had won a World Tour title this year until Fajar-Shohibul broke the duck in China. In contrast, Fajar has struggled to produce his best form with Rian this year. The world No. 4 duo's best result was finishing runners-up in the Indonesian Masters in January. Fajar-Rian will be hoping for better fortunes in the world meet where they will be joined by world No. 8 Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza and world No. 10 Leo Rolly-Bagas Maulana. Indonesia's last world champions in the men's doubles were Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan, who captured the title in 2019 in Basel.
