Rights groups call for Gaza aid foundation shutdown, warn of complicity in war crimes
'This new model of privatised, militarised aid distribution constitutes a radical and dangerous shift away from established international humanitarian relief operations,' the 15 organisations said in an open letter.
It called the US-backed group's operations 'dehumanising, repeatedly deadly and (contributing) to the forced displacement of the very population it purports to help.'
The groups urged GHF and all the organisations and individuals who have been supporting its work, to 'to cease their operations.'
'Failure to do so may expose these organisations... to further risk of criminal and civil liability for aiding and abetting or otherwise being complicit in crimes under international law, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide in violation of international law,' the letter warned.
The signatories include the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, the American Center for Constitutional Rights, and the International Commission of Jurists.
An officially private effort with opaque funding, GHF began operations on May 26 after Israel completely cut off supplies into Gaza for more than two months, sparking warnings of mass famine.
The United Nations and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives.
According to figures issued by the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, at least 450 people have been killed and nearly 3,500 injured since GHF began distributing meal boxes in late May.
GHF has denied responsibility for deaths near its aid points, contradicting statements from witnesses and Gaza rescue services. — AFP

(AP pic) LOS ANGELES : Wildfires that devastated parts of the Los Angeles area in January indirectly led to hundreds of deaths in the ensuing weeks, far exceeding the official toll of 31 fatalities, according to a study released on Wednesday. The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, or JAMA, estimated 440 'excess deaths' were attributable to the fires from Jan 5 to Feb 1, using models that compared predicted mortality under normal circumstances to actual numbers documented during that period. The additional deaths likely reflect a mix of factors, including increased exposure of people with heart and lung disease to poor air quality from smoke and toxins released by the fires, as well as healthcare delays and disruptions, the study said. The findings 'underscore the need to complement direct fatalities estimates with alternative methods to quantify the additional mortality burden of wildfires and of climate-related emergencies more broadly,' the researchers wrote. Two wind-driven wildfires that erupted during the first week of January on opposite sides of Los Angeles damaged or destroyed nearly 16,000 structures combined – laying waste to much of the seaside district of Pacific Palisades and the foothill community of Altadena. Together, the blazes scorched 152sq km, an area larger than Paris. The official tally of people who perished as a direct result of the fires stands at 31, after the most recent set of human remains were unearthed in Altadena in July, six months after the fires. Governor Gavin Newsom in February requested nearly US$40 billion in wildfire aid from Congress. Some estimates put economic losses from the fires at more than US$250 billion, making the conflagration one of the most costly natural disasters in US history. The JAMA study acknowledged some limitations, saying the data may need to be revised upward in the future and the research did not reflect any fire-attributable deaths beyond Feb 1.

New York steps up war on rats with sterilisation, high-tech tracking
NEW YORK, Aug 9 — New York is waging a war on multiple fronts to combat the near ubiquitous rats that plague city streets and the subways, leaving some residents afraid to let their children walk on sidewalks. Faced with an overwhelming and ever-growing problem, officials have moved beyond gassing burrows to suffocate rodents and are now using high-tech mapping tools to try and sterilize the population. Alongside targeted interventions, officials are mounting an effort to educate the public about the need to avoid leaving behind food waste that feeds and sustains the rat population. Caroline Bragdon, director of neighborhood interventions for Pest Control Services within New York City's Department of Health, told AFP that the lack of food 'stresses' rats and other vermin. 'Perhaps this forces them to go further in search of food, but perhaps they simply have fewer offspring,' she said. 'That's usually what we're seeing. Fewer rats over time. Less breeding leads to less rat activity,' Bragdon added. The city is testing out an arsenal of different tools in the Harlem neighborhood, aiming to find new products and methods to tackle the rats. For large, densely populated cities like New York—with its 8.5 million inhabitants—food sources for the rodents are bountiful, whether it's on sidewalks, in overflowing trash bins, or in parks. 'Lately, I haven't felt that I have to run in between the mounds of trash to run away from rats because they have those new (sealed trash) containers,' said Harlem resident Karen Del Aguila, 50. Rats, which survive on practically the same diet as humans, can flourish even on items discarded as trash—like soda cans thrown into recycling bins, or crumbs given to pigeons, warned Bragdon. A rat needs one ounce (28 grams) of food per day to sustain itself, and it can have up to 12 offspring per litter. During its short life of less than a year, it can have between five and seven litters. The best way to counter the scourge of rats is to 'remove their food source... So make it harder for them, then they're going to have to travel further to try and find something,' said Alexa Albert, a supervisor for the city's pest control service. It can be done She swiped her screen to show the street-level data logged on a rat tracker app used by those involved in the crusade against rodent infestation. The city health department's 70 inspectors use the mobile app to detect, report and monitor rodent activity—as well as plot abatement tactics. Inspectors go door to door asking businesses and residents to clean buildings, stores, and sidewalks. Authorities also now offer training on how to combat rats, taken by thousands of residents and building managers. In October 2022, New York City vaunted a 'trash revolution,' aimed at installing sealed containers to allow the removal of black bags of organic waste from sidewalks after rats surged during the coronavirus pandemic. Pre-pandemic, their population had been cut by as much as 90 percent in some areas. 'So we know it can be done,' said Bragdon, who added that she hoped 2025 would be a 'turnaround year.' Local resident Jessica Sanchez said she had observed much fewer rats in her neighborhood. 'Not a long time ago, when you went to put out the trash, five of them came out,' she said. 'I was even afraid to put my son on the floor.' The rat warriors are seeking to learn the rodents' dietary habits throughout the year by using samples of different food types to identify what bait they are most likely to take. In 2024, complaints about rat activity dropped 25 percent compared to the year before, according to official data. But so far, only Manhattan's Chinatown has managed to bring the rat population under control. — AFP

MSF condemns 'orchestrated killings' at Gaza aid sites
KUALA LUMPUR: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has accused Israeli forces and private American contractors of orchestrating violence against Palestinians at food distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), calling for the immediate shutdown of these operations. In a new report titled "This is not aid. This is orchestrated killing," MSF documents targeted and indiscriminate attacks at GHF-run sites in Gaza, which have become deadly hotspots amid the ongoing conflict. Between June 7 and July 24, MSF treated 1,380 casualties — including 28 fatalities — at its clinics near the GHF distribution points. Among them were 71 children wounded by gunfire, 25 of whom were under the age of 15. MSF General Director Raquel Ayora alleged that children have been shot in the chest while simply reaching for food. "People have been crushed or suffocated in stampedes, and entire crowds have been gunned down at distribution points. In nearly 54 years of MSF's operations, we have rarely witnessed such systematic violence against unarmed civilians. "These Gaza Humanitarian Foundation distribution sites, which are supposed to provide aid, have instead become laboratories of cruelty. This must end immediately." MSF's data shows 11 per cent of gunshot wounds treated were to the head and neck, with another 19 per cent to the chest, abdomen, and back — indicating intentional targeting rather than accidental fire. Mohammed Riad Tabasi, a patient at the Al-Mawasi clinic, recounted, "I saw it with my own eyes, about 20 corpses around me. All of them shot in the head, in the stomach." The GHF, operated under full Israeli military control and "secured" by private American armed contractors, replaced the UN-led aid effort in May amid allegations of aid diversion. MSF called the scheme a "laboratory of cruelty" and urged governments to suspend all financial and political support. MSF emergency coordinator Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa said patients also suffer theft and violent assaults while trying to secure or protect food rations, with many listed as "Beaten By Others" in medical records. "On Aug 1, 15-year-old Mahmoud Jamal Al-Attar was killed at a GHF site while trying to get food. "We only treat a fraction of those killed or injured. The murder of children at these sites is intentional." MSF calls on governments, especially the United States, to suspend all support for the GHF and urges the immediate restoration of UN-coordinated aid distribution to protect civilians in Gaza.
