Four children and two adults killed in deadliest Maryland house fire in a decade
Oliver Alkire, the master deputy state fire marshal, told reporters that the blaze was the deadliest fire in Maryland in more than 10 years.
'The house was built in a year when they should've had hard-wired smoke alarms. I can't confirm if they were actually activated.
One person managed to escape the fire reported at about 8.40am at the home in Waldorf, about 55 miles (88km) south of Baltimore, the local news outlet WTOP reported.
It took about 70 firefighters more than an hour to control the flames. One firefighter was hospitalized and another first responder was treated at the scene for unspecified injuries.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. Alkire said the blaze originated on the right side of the home within an enclosed porch.
The ages and names of the victims were not immediately released.
Alkire said officials didn't immediately know if the residence had working smoke alarms and reminded the public to make sure their homes were equipped with such devices.
'We have no reports of someone hearing a smoke alarm activating, so it just shows you the importance of how important those life-saving devices are,' Alkire said.

Husband's tribute to mother-of-two killed by falling tree branch in Blackburn
A mother-of-two who died after being hit by a falling tree branch on the way home from a family outing would do "everything she could for anyone", her husband has said. "Honestly, I feel completely lost without her and I do not know how to put into words how much I miss her face, her character and her presence. My one and only." Detective Inspector Iain Czapowski said: "This is an absolutely tragic incident which has cost a young woman her life and my thoughts are with her loved ones. "We are working closely with our colleagues from the Health and Safety Executive and with the co-operation of the council to try and establish the full circumstances of what happened, and I would like to speak to anyone with information which could assist with that.

Bus crash in Afghanistan kills more than 70 Afghans returning from Iran
A bus crash in northwestern Afghanistan killed at least 79 people returning from Iran, including 19 children, an official said. Two people were also injured in the crash, Ministry of Interior spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani told The Associated Press. Tolo News, citing the official, said the accident happened Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. local time in Herat province. The bus collided with a truck and a motorbike, causing a massive fire that killed many on the spot, the outlet reported. Chaos at Milan Malpensa Airport after passenger ‘set fire to check-in desk'
A major European airport has been forced to close off parts of its terminal after a fire broke out at a check-in desk. Part of Milan Malpensa Airport's Terminal One was closed after a man reportedly set fire to the check-in area, according to Varese News. Travellers were seen queuing outside the building as emergency crews worked to battle the flames, which filled the terminal with thick smoke. After first setting fire to a waste bin, the man damaged check-in desks and information screens with a hammer, the local outlet reported. According to Corriere Di Novara, the suspect set the fire using a flammable liquid. A SEA employee noticed the rising smoke and intervened while he was destroying screens between desks 12 and 13, Varese News added. Border Police officers soon arrived and restrained the man, while staff from airport security company ICTS worked to put out the flames. The SEA employee who intervened was injured and treated by emergency medical services. The hammer was taken by Polaria officers, who are now investigating the incident and the attacker's motives.
