6-Time PGA Winner Faces Criticism After Missing The Open's Friday Cut
6-Time PGA Winner Faces Criticism After Missing The Open's Friday Cut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The PGA Tour headed to Royal Portrush golf club in Northern Ireland this week for the 2025's 'The Open (also known as the British Open in the United States)' as a familiar face, Scottie Scheffler, finished with a field-best -10 score after two rounds on Friday. Scheffler's success obscured the struggles of Cameron Smith, the six-time PGA Tour event winner who signed a $140-plus million dollar contract with Saudi Arabia (Public Investment Fund) funded LIV Golf in February 2023. Smith missed the cut after a frustrating performance that caused fans to doubt where his career is headed, and where his motivation lies heading down the stretch of the 2025 Tour. Smith finished at +8 on Friday and did not make the cut. He has missed the cut at all four major PGA Tour events this year. Fans pointed to his lucrative LIV Golf contract as a reason for his struggles. "Got a jillion fishing 5-6 days a week except when he has to play," one reader said. "LIV Golf ruined him," a second added. "He got the bag (bag emoji) and checked out," a third said. "Took the bag and lost motivation," another said. "For some one title is enough." Another said that the competitive side of Smith vanished after his move to LIV. "Joining LIV is what went wrong," another story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 18, 2025, where it first appeared.

U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley said Bryson DeChambeau will make Ryder Cup team regardless of qualifying
Bryson DeChambeau is going to be a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team this fall no matter what. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley texted Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig after the British Open on Sunday and confirmed that, even if DeChambeau falls out of the top six in the Ryder Cup standings, he'd use a captain's pick on him to ensure that DeChambeau gets to compete with the Americans at Bethpage Black. 'Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder cup,' Bradley said. 'He brings so much. He brings energy, passion, but most importantly, he's one of the best players on the planet.' DeChambeau posted a final-round 64 on Sunday at Royal Portrush to finish T10 at the British Open. He's now finished inside the top 10 at three of the four major championships this season. But, as DeChambeau competes with LIV Golf, he's no longer eligible for points on the U.S. Ryder Cup standings. He is currently fifth on that list. The top six golfers on that list after the BMW Championship next month will earn automatic spots on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. As DeChambeau holds just a slight lead over Justin Thomas on the list, and there are several other PGA Tour members lurking just outside the cutoff, it's very possible that he could fall out of that top group. After the top six players are locked in, Bradley will then make his six captain's picks to round out his 12-man team. At that point, if necessary, he'd use one on DeChambeau. DeChambeau said he spoke with Bradley 'briefly' at Royal Portrush this week, and that he 'put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational.' While he didn't reveal what that message was, DeChambeau is clearly in and ready to go for the Ryder Cup. 'It meant a lot,' he said. 'This year's no joke. We're tired of it. We're tired of losing.' DeChambeau, after making the jump to LIV Golf, was not on the United States' team for the last Ryder Cup in 2023. They fell to Europe that year in Rome. He has played on two previous teams, however, including the 2021 squad that won in Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. The Americans haven't lost at home since 2012, when the Europeans edged out a one-point win at Medinah Country Club. With DeChambeau now on board, he's hoping to bring an extra push with him to New York in September. 'I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA,' he said.

Concerning News Emerges for Brooks Koepka During The Open
Concerning News Emerges for Brooks Koepka During The Open originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Brooks Koepka has always been a surprising take on golf's biggest stages. With five major wins under his belt, the Smash GC captain knows how to rise to the occasion. But as the 2025 Open Championship tees off at Royal Portrush, questions hang over Koepka's readiness, both physically and mentally. The final major of the year has begun in Antrim, Northern Ireland, with Rory McIlroy returning to familiar turf and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite. Defending champion Xander Schauffele, along with LIV stars Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, are all in the mix for the Claret Jug. However, it's Koepka's quiet lead-up to the tournament that's now raising eyebrows. According to coach Pete Cowen, 'Brooks has got a little twinge in his knee,' a worrying detail for a player already under the radar this week. Despite looking calm during Wednesday's practice in the sunshine, his recent form hasn't been stellar. Ranked 28th in the LIV standings, and coming off a fiery withdrawal at LIV Dallas, Koepka is searching for his spark. He did show flashes of form at the U.S. Open, finishing T12, but his standards are higher. And skipping media duties this week? Very unlike him. As for today's leaderboard, not many have gone under par. Only Danes Thorbjørn Olesen and Rasmus Hojgaard are in the red. Padraig Harrington, Phil Mickelson and Marco Penge sit at even, while Harrington's early momentum faded with back-to-back bogeys. Koepka may be flying under the radar now but with his track record, this could be the calm before a storm or a sign of more trouble to story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 17, 2025, where it first appeared.
