Victor Griffith opens up on St Johnstone challenge as Panama recall has pre-season impact
St Johnstone midfielder, Victor Griffith, aims to make up for lost time with the Panama national team.
The 24-year-old signed for Saints in January, and playing for his country after a couple of years out of the picture was one of his aims.
Head coach, Thomas Christiansen, wanted to call him up in March but Griffith decided that his recovery from an ankle injury would be better served by staying in Scotland.
Although his form for the Perth side wasn't as good after that lay-off than it was before, he was recalled for Panama's June World Cup qualifiers and the Concacaf Gold Cup that follows on.
And, speaking to the media back home, Griffith has been positive about his first few months at McDiarmid Park, despite the fact Saints were relegated from the Premiership.
He is currently in a training camp and is expected to be confirmed in Panama's official 26-man squad at the start of next week.
It has been suggested that Griffith has a strong chance of getting game-time.
And he is excited about the prospect of adding to his 10 caps now that the wait for a recall has ended.
'I have high expectations,' he said. 'I've been waiting for this opportunity for a long time.
'Right now, I'm focused on doing well, on my return to the national team, and I want to accomplish everything the coach asks of me.
'Expectations are high, and we're always going to want to win.'
On the challenges Griffith has faced in Scotland, he reflected: 'Well, it was actually quite a big step, going from the Panama league to European football.
'That's rarely seen before.
'The truth is that it's helped me a lot. Since I arrived there, they've given me enormous confidence.
'I played in positions that weren't my usual ones.
'They opened up a window of positions where I could perhaps show off a bit better or do things differently.'
Panama's busy schedule is likely to have an impact on Griffith being able to hit the ground running with Saints next season, however.
The last time there was a Gold Cup, they went all the way through to the final.
If they repeat that this time around, the tournament won't conclude for Griffith until July 7.
Saints return for pre-season training on June 23.

Sarina Wiegman still weighing up options before naming England's Euros squad
Chelsea forward Aggie Beever-Jones certainly made a case for inclusion on Friday night, when she became just the second Lioness to score a hat-trick at Wembley in England's 6-0 Nations League dismantling of Portugal. Wiegman agreed she and her team needed to consider a number of factors – including fitness and relationships – when choosing which 23 players would defend England's title in Switzerland. Time to relive all six goals! 😍 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) May 30, 2025 'Of course you want these connections,' said Wiegman. 'Some players play more together than others. You have your opponents and of course, we still have players that are building too, so can they go to the level they had before they had injuries? 'I don't know yet. We're still trying out things and finding the balance.' England must beat World Cup holders Spain in their final Nations League group-stage meeting on Tuesday to clinch top of their group and advance to the autumn knockouts, which will determine the 2025 winners. It is also a final opportunity for players who might feel they are on the fringe to fight for their spot in Switzerland. Clinching at least second spot in Group Three through the Portugal triumph means England avoid a more complicated play-off situation and secure a more-favourable qualifying pathway for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. Lauren Hemp made her first England appearance since October on Friday (Adam Davy/PA) Long-term injured trio Alex Greenwood, Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp all returned to the pitch against Portugal, the latter starting and looking in form on Friday night. 'They've worked so hard to get where they are right now and that's what they showed,' added Wiegman. 'If you haven't put all the work in it to this point, then you cannot have a good performance, so I'm really happy with that. 'Of course we need to keep building, the Euros are really coming close and at the same time, we want to perform in the Nations League, so we are trying to find that balance.' One of the biggest questions ahead of Thursday's announcement is whether or not Chelsea forward Lauren James – who scored three goals and added three assists at the 2023 World Cup – will have recovered enough from the hamstring injury she sustained in April. Wiegman hopes James will be fit in time for the tournament (Zed Jameson/PA) Arsenal striker Alessia Russo was forced to sit out Friday night's encounter with a calf issue, but Wiegman said before the contest that she hoped the Women's Super League joint-Golden Boot winner would be available to face Spain. 'We have so many options up front in the squad right now,' Wiegman added. 'And what we also hope for is that LJ (James) is coming back too. 'She's already up and doing good, so trying to build her too, seeing what the competition of course will be. 'I hope every striker will be fit that we have now in the squad and LJ added to that, it's going to be really hard for me to make decisions for the Euros squad.'

Man City make £34m move for Rayan Cherki as Man Utd target decides on transfer
Rayan Cherki is generating plenty of interest from top clubs after his incredible season saw him score 12 and assist 19 in all competitions, with Manchester City becoming the leading favourites to sign him Manchester City have emerged as favourites to sign Lyon star Rayan Cherki this summer, with the midfielder eager to link up with Pep Guardiola 's men, according to reports. Cherki has become one of Europe's hottest properties after a stellar season in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old enjoyed an incredible season, scoring 12 goals and assisting 19 in all competitions, and with Lyon only mustering a sixth-placed finish he is now being tipped for a move to a top European club. Manchester United were previously tipped as a destination for Cherki, after watching him score twice against them in the Europa League this season. But after missing out on European football, a move to their rivals City looks more likely. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, a move to City is "accelerating" for Cherki - who was voted in the Ligue 1 team of the season following his sparkling creative displays. The report states City "appreciate" Cherki's talents and see him as an ideal replacement for the outgoing Kevin de Bruyne. Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz was previously a big target for City, but Bayern Munich and Liverpool have now jumped to the front of the queue. Cherki's preference is to play in the No 10 role - which is where City would want to play him, it goes on. The Sky Blues are now ramping up talks with the player's team and are "very confident" over a deal. The boyhood Lyon star has given the thumbs up over moving to the Etihad and is excited about the prospect of playing under Guardiola, who he has already spoken to - the report claims. Cherki wants to sort his future out as quickly as possible in a deal that could earn Lyon around £34m - though he does have a release clause of £25m. Cherki has a contract at Lyon that runs until next summer He has hinted he could have played his final game for Lyon after admitting he has "done everything I could" for the club, saying it will "always be in my heart". "I don't know," he said when asked about his future. "In any case, I know I've given my all for the club. I've done everything I could for OL, because it's a club I'll never forget, one that will always be in my heart. "I stayed when a lot of players left. Today, I have no regrets. Whatever happens, I'll give my all to the last minute for the club. I've only got OL on my mind, and I'd never call on anyone else." Cherki joined Lyon aged six and began playing for its reserve team at the age of 15. He became the first team's youngest ever scorer at 16 in 2020 and has gone on to make 185 appearances, scoring 29 times.
