One-punch killer of rival Blackpool fan in brawl outside pub on the Promenade is jailed

ITV News22-05-2025

A man who killed a rival football fan with one punch has been jailed.
Tony Johnson, who was 55, was among a group of Blackpool supporters who gathered outside the Manchester Pub on the Promenade following the Championship tie with Burnley on March, 4 2023.
The pub had been designated for away fans but a disturbance developed between the rival groups, amongst the visiting fans was Jake Balmforth.
He was caught on CCTV punching Mr Johnson once in the face, and he suffered a serious head injury.
Despite the efforts of emergency services at the scene, and care given by medical staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, he died two days later without regaining consciousness.
Balmforth, 35, of Tarvin Close, Burnley, was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury at Preston Crown Court after a six-day trial earlier this month.
Judge Robert Altham, the Honorary Recorder of Preston, jailed him for five years at the same court on Thursday.
Balmforth was also given a nine-year order banning him from football grounds.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows of Lancashire Constabulary's Major Investigation Team said: 'My thoughts remain very much with Tony Johnson's family.
'It has been a harrowing experience for them over the last two years, losing a loved one and having to relive the events of the evening of 4 March 2023 during the trial.
'This case shows how outbreaks of violence can lead to tragedy and what the terrible consequences of one punch can be.
'Jake Balmforth was convicted by the jury of Mr Johnson's manslaughter and will have to carry that burden for the rest of his life.'
Eight other men who pleaded guilty to affray will be sentenced at Preston Crown Court on 4 August.

Moment gobsmacked jailbird is arrested as he leaves prison after he was caught dealing cocaine from his cell - and now he is back inside

This is the shocking moment a drug dealer was arrested at the prison gates - just seconds after leaving jail. Samuel Watts had just been released from HMP Kirkham after a three-year sentence for a drug dealing plot, but only tasted freedom for a matter of seconds. As he left the prison gates, officers placed the criminal in handcuffs as he can be heard saying 'you don't know what I've gone through'. After being placed under arrest in November, Watts has now been jailed for another four years and four months after pleading guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A drugs (cocaine) while serving a prison sentence. The 34-year-old, of Thornley Green, was originally locked up in September 2023 for dealing cocaine and cannabis, Burnley Crown Court was told. In July last year, officers at Northwich Proactive CID discovered intelligence suggesting Watts was in possession of a mobile and was coordinating the sale of drugs from his prison cell. Prison officers then searched Watts and found an Apple iPhone strapped to his waist. Watts was originally locked up in September 2023 for dealing cocaine and cannabis, Burnley Crown Court was told. In July last year, officers at Northwich Proactive CID discovered intelligence suggesting Watts was in possession of a mobile and was coordinating the sale of drugs from his prison cell The phone was later analysed by officers who a catalogue of messages that proved he was selling illegal drugs. Police Constable Dan Lee, Of Northwich Proactive CID, said: 'Watts saw his initial prison sentence as an inconvenience rather than a punishment. 'After smuggling a mobile phone into the prison, he thought that he could simply continue to run his criminal enterprise from behind bars, directing people lower down the chain to deliver drugs on his behalf. 'However, he clearly underestimated the dedication and determination of the team here at Northwich Proactive CID. 'As soon as we became aware of his latest activities we brought them to a swift conclusion and were ready to arrest him as he was released from prison. 'I welcome the latest sentence handed to Watts and hopefully this time he'll use his time behind bars to reflect upon his actions rather than trying to set up another business venture, otherwise we'll be waiting for him again next time he's released.'

‘Time has moved on' – Man Utd wild child Ravel Morrison, 32, targeting Championship transfer as he puts past behind him

RAVEL MORRISON has pleaded for clubs to ignore his wild child past. The former Manchester United wonderkid is targeting a move back to the Championship - but wants to put the past behind him. Morrison was hailed as a whizz-kid of the Old Trafford youth system when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge but he quickly earned the reputation of an unreliable 'bad boy'. He made what turned out to be disappointing move to West Ham and then Lazio, where he only managed eight appearances in 2015. Loan spells at Birmingham City, QPR, Cardiff City, Sheffield United, Derby County and Mexican side at Atlas also didn't work out. But Morrison is wiser than the kid who got into trouble, ended up in court and left Old Trafford on a sour note. Back in September, the 32-year-old signed for the 14th club of his rollercoaster career - Precision FC in Dubai in the UAE second division. He told The Athletic: 'Even now, I can guarantee that if I signed for a club in England, the headline in all the newspapers would be something negative. 'If another player at United gets into trouble, he's always 'the next Ravel'. Anything that anyone does wrong gets linked to my name. 'It pops up on my Instagram and I'm thinking, 'Oh, not again… how many years is this now?'. At West Ham, there were occasions when he missed training because he had been up all night on his PlayStation. And he was accused of attitude issues, timing problems and appeared in court for witness intimidation and criminal damage while at Man Utd in 2011. Ravel Morrison reveals he used to steal boots from Man Utd dressing room to sell and feed his family Morrison was also once fined £7000 by the FA for alleged homophobic comments made on Twitter. But homesick Morrison has set his mind on moving back to England and having one last crack at the second-tier again, where he has already played for six different sides. He said: 'I do believe I can play in the Championship — easy. The frustrating thing is I'm not getting the opportunity. 'My agent has spoken to a lot of sporting directors, chief scouts and heads of recruitment, and we've got really close to an agreement. 'Then they get the manager's opinion and it becomes, 'Ah, but he's done this, he's done that', and they are speaking about things that happened when I was a kid. 'Time has moved on, it's over a decade ago. But it's crazy sometimes how people don't move on.' 'So many people have formed an opinion about me, but those opinions are based on things that happened 10 to 15 years ago. 'I'm 32 now. I've played football around the world and had a good career. I'm not a kid of 16 or 17 anymore. 'But then again, I have to look at myself because it all stems from my own mistakes. I did some things that were wrong and I can't blame anyone but myself.' He has won 20 caps for Jamaica since switching allegiances in 2020. Morrison, who shares the same hometown as Marcus Rashford in Wythenshawe, has his eyes set on returning to where it all began at Carrington. Speaking on the Undr the Cosh podcast last month, Morrison said: "I've got my B licence now - I did it in the summer. '"I want to get into some type of coaching after I retire. That'd be good. I'd like to go back to United!" 2
