Johor cops bust 21 drug rings, seize RM81m in drugs since January
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor police have crippled 21 drug trafficking syndicates and seized illicit narcotics worth RM81.07 million in the first five months of this year.
Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the success of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) also led to the arrest of 58 syndicate members and asset seizures worth RM2.26 million.
'Additionally, JSJN recorded an impressive performance, making a total of 10,794 arrests for various drug offences during the same period. They also seized drugs worth RM83.18 million and forfeited assets valued at RM7.49 million,' he said in his speech at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters monthly gathering here today.
Kumar said the Internal Security and Public Order Department also recorded seizures of illicit cigarettes worth RM48,000 and misappropriated subsidised palm oil worth RM1.11 million.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department contributed by achieving a 59.64 per cent resolution rate for index crimes during the period.
Kumar also said that 54 rape cases involving teenagers were recorded from 2023 until last year.
'One of the primary causes is the easy accessibility of pornographic content on social media, the general lack of awareness about Malaysian laws concerning such crimes, and the breakdown of family structures. This situation results in teenagers missing out on attention, affection, and supervision from their parents,' he added.
To proactively address the issue, the Sexual Investigation Unit has visited schools to deliver talks and raise awareness among students about such crimes.
He urged all parties to take these cases seriously, advising parents to express affection, raise their children with strong religious and moral values and stay vigilant about their children's activities and social circles.
Meanwhile, at the monthly gathering, 47 individuals received appreciation awards, including four members of the public and 43 police officers from various ranks, as well as public servants from the Johor contingent.

A three-member bench led by Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Seri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli and Federal Court judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais awarded RM30 million each in equitable, exemplary and aggravated damages. "Public Bank is to pay two per cent interest per annum on the judgment sum from today until the payment of damages is settled,' said Justice Hasnah. In delivering the court's decision, she said the appellants had presented financial reports and audited accounts through an expert witness, which were not challenged by Public Bank. Justice Hasnah said the Court of Appeal erred when it decided that the appellants had failed to prove damages, resulting in an award of only RM10,000 in nominal damages. On May 26, the panel overturned the Court of Appeal earlier decision which had granted nominal damages to NFCorp, Mohamad Salleh and three subsidiaries - National Meat and Livestock Corporation Sdn Bhd, Agroscience Industries Sdn Bhd, and Real Food Company Sdn Bhd. Mohamad Salleh is the husband of former Women, Family and Community Development Minister and Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. Also on May 26, the Federal Court upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal, which found Public Bank liable for breach of confidentiality. The court ordered Public Bank to pay RM300,000 in legal costs. The court adjourned until today to decide on the amount of damages. NFCorp and four others filed the RM560 million suit against the bank in 2012 over the leakage of their banking details. The High Court dismissed the lawsuit in 2019, but the appellate court in 2023 reversed the decision after allowing their (NFCorp and four others) appeals. However, the Court of Appeal held that since NFCorp and the four others succeeded in proving liability but failed to prove damages, the court decided to award a sum of RM10,000 in nominal damages. In the suit, NFCorp and four others claimed that the bank breached confidentiality by allowing details of banking transactions to be revealed by the then PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli. They also claimed their business reputation and credibility suffered irreparable loss and damage as a result of the breach under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act. After the court proceedings, Mohamad Salleh expressed gratitude, saying his family endured hardship for 13 years due to the case. MACC nabs two including assemblyman in Sabah mining licence probe
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested two individuals with the title 'Datuk' on suspicion of soliciting and accepting bribes amounting to RM200,000, in connection with the issuance of mining licences in Sabah. According to sources, the two men, in their 30s and 60s, were detained at 9.45am and 11.50am on Wednesday (June 18) when they turned up to give their statements at the Sabah MACC office in Kota Kinabalu and the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, respectively. "The two suspects, a businessman and an assemblyman, are believed to have committed the offences between 2023 and 2024. "Preliminary investigations found that both individuals solicited and accepted bribes amounting to RM200,000 in connection with facilitating mining licence applications in the state,' the sources said. Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. He said the businessman was released on bail of RM100,000, (with a deposit of RM10,000) in two sureties, after his statement was recorded.
