Parsons police commended for breaking drug trafficking ring
PARSONS, Kan. — Several local police officers and agencies were honored for uncommon valor Wednesday.
Parsons Police Department announced Thursday that several members of its police force were honored at the Annual Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP) Spring Conference held in Mulvane, Kansas on Wednesday, being awarded with the prestigious Bronze Unit Citation for Uncommon Valor.
Members of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) were also present and honored with the award.
Officials say the officers earned the award through their hundreds of hours of investigative work done by officers in dismantling a large drug trafficking operation throughout Southeast Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
'This was a textbook example of what a motivated law enforcement agency can achieve when local, state, and federal agencies come together to protect our communities,' said Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks. 'Detective Dickens' initiative and leadership were critical to bringing this case to the level of federal prosecution.'
Deputy Chief Dennis Dodd, adding, 'This case reflects the professionalism, commitment, and tireless work ethic of our investigations division. They represented the Parsons Police Department with distinction and purpose.'
Attending the KACP conference to accept the Bronze Unit Citation on behalf of the Parsons Police Department were Lieutenant Detective Sherri McGuire, Sergeant Detective Brice Dickens, Sergeant Detective Tony Adamson and Sergeant Detective Timothy Gilliland. Members of the KBI and the DEA were also present to accept awards on their agencies' behalf. Chief Spinks and Deputy Chief Dodd were also present for support.
The award is referred to by organizers as a testament to strong interagency collaboration and aims to highlight the dedication required to bring such a complex case to fruition.

Floodwaters help end southeast Kansas pursuit with reckless driver, police say
PARSONS, Kan. — Parsons police said floodwaters helped stop a reckless driver from running from officers. Officers were reportedly in a high-speed pursuit with a Honda Civic that was seen driving erratically near the 700 block of Main Street around 11 p.m. Thursday. Authorities arrested the driver, Tyler Vickrey, 30, who they said fled after officers attempted a traffic stop. The pursuit reached speeds of over 100 mph and extended into Cherokee County after entering Highway 400 going east. Atlanta city leaders offer teens fun and safe options for the summer
School is out for the summer in Atlanta, and city leaders are going all out to keep teens out of trouble. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens spoke at the Dunbar Recreation Center about the city's plans to offer teens options to have fun and keep busy this summer. Dickens said that if you cut down on youth crime, all crime goes down. 'And it has. And a big part of that is giving our young people something to do,' Dickens said. The pool and splashpad at the recreation center are now open. Last week, the city opened all of its pools and launched the Summer Youth Employment program. Mika Warner participated in that program and now attends Southern University. The mayor's office has partnered with Atlanta Public Schools to make some of its facilities available so that the next couple of months will be fun and safe. 'How do we best utilize every square foot we have to give these young people everything they deserve?' Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson said. The mayor said more than 3,000 teens will be able to take part in the city's employment program. 'Giving them guidance. Giving them mentorship. And giving them a job for those who want it,' Dickens said. Lee's Summit police officer injured in shooting released from hospital
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Lee's Summit police officer injured in a shooting late Sunday night has been released from the hospital. Lee's Summit Police Sgt. Chris Depue said Officer Jared Timbrook was shot Sunday evening while chasing a suspect on foot while responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex. He was treated by fellow officers on scene and taken to an area trauma center. Depue said Timbrook will continue his healing journey at home. 'On behalf of Officer Timbrook and his family along with the men and women of the LSPD, we are thankful for the amazing care that he received and the outpouring of support for him from this amazing community,' Depue aded. Timbrook has been with the police department for approximately 18 months. Thomas Eugene Tolbert, the man suspected of shooting Timbrook, was found and arrested in Ellis, Kansas early Tuesday morning. Ellis Police Chief Avery Smith said Tolbert received a ride from someone who didn't know Tolbert was wanted. He made it to a hotel about 300 miles west of the Kansas City metro area . Around 4:50 a.m., KBI agents, Ellis County Sheriff's Office deputies, and Hays Police Department officers arrived at the hotel and safely took Tolbert into custody, per KBI. Depue says the Blue Alert helped speed up the process of locating and arresting Tolbert. The charges were filed Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court in connection to the shooting. Tolbert has been booked into the Ellis County jail, according to the KBI.
