1879: The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts (later renamed Art Institute of Chicago) was incorporated.
1977: Reputed Chicago mob hit man Harry 'The Hook' Aleman was acquitted in the Sept. 27, 1972, slaying of Teamster William Logan. Evidence later surfaced that Judge Frank Wilson had been bribed.

Aleman became the first defendant in U.S. history to be retried on murder charges after having been acquitted at trial. He was convicted in 1997 at the second trial and sentenced to 100 to 300 years in prison, where he died in 2010.
1985: The first 31 miles of the Deep Tunnel, or the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan, was completed. Still under construction, it's the largest public works project in Chicago's history and one of the biggest in the U.S. The tunnel system is expected to be 130 miles long and cost $3.6 billion when completed.
The Deep Tunnel is intended to 'bottle a rainstorm' by channeling storm water that overflows from sewers into the system's tunnels that connect with massive reservoirs.
1988: Michael Jordan became the first NBA player to be named league MVP and defensive player of the year in the same season after averaging 35 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 3.2 steals.
1993: Jordan sparked controversy by gambling with his father in Atlantic City, New Jersey, casinos the night before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Knicks. He was criticized the next night for shooting 12-for-32 in a 96-91 loss, but the Chicago Bulls still won the series.
'He's a competitor,' James Jordan, Michael's father, told the Tribune in late May 1993. 'Losing $10,000 to him would be like me losing 10 cents. … If he was playing for matchsticks or straws, he'd have the same level of competition.
'He certainly doesn't have a gambling problem. He wouldn't be doing that if he couldn't afford it. He isn't that stupid. He has a competition problem. He was born with that. And if he didn't have a competition problem, you guys wouldn't be writing about him. The person he tries to outdo most of the time is himself.'
1995: The Illinois General Assembly approved the Chicago School Reform Amendatory Act, which gave Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley the ability to appoint school board members directly and replace the superintendent with an appointed chief executive officer.

Billy Donovan lands extension with Bulls after Knicks' interest in coaching search
The Knicks' coaching search might've helped another candidate land an extension. Billy Donovan, whom the Knicks requested to interview after firing Tom Thibodeau before the Bulls rejected it, signed a multi-year extension to remain in Chicago, ESPN reported Sunday. Getty Images The Knicks made their request to interview Donovan early in their coaching search following their shocking decision to fire Thibodeau, but similar to their requests for the Mavericks' Jason Kidd, the Rockets' Ime Udoka, the Timberwolves' Chris Finch and the Hawks' Quin Snyder, they weren't allowed to move forward with him. Udoka secured a multi-year extension that made him one of the NBA's highest-paid coaches, while NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks are expected to extend Kidd before the start of next season. The Knicks ended up hiring Mike Brown, the former Kings, Cavaliers and Lakers coach who will now be tasked with ensuring that a coaching change doesn't result in a step back from a run to the Eastern Conference finals.

Marcus Smart on what JJ Redick told him upon signing with Lakers
It is predicted by plenty of people that Marcus Smart will have a significant impact on the Los Angeles Lakers this coming season. Smart has long been one of the NBA's best and peskiest perimeter defenders, as he was named to the All-Defensive first team three times and won the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year award, and perimeter defense happens to be something the Lakers have been lacking. At age 31, Smart may not be the same player he was three years ago, and he has had trouble staying healthy over the last couple of years. But he said he is highly motivated going into the 2025-26 season, and he relayed that Lakers coach JJ Redick wants him to get back to the player he was with the Boston Celtics before they traded him in 2023. 'JJ just wants me to be me. The person that I was in Boston, the person that he played against and had me chasing around when he was on the court playing. So that's all he asked me and I think I could do that to the best of my ability with the best of them because like I said I have a chip on my shoulder and I'm ready to go.' In his first nine seasons, all of which came with the Celtics, Smart was a big glue guy, as he not only was a defensive menace but was also a terrific secondary facilitator and ball handler, as well as someone who was very resourceful. He can effectively guard at least three positions on the court, and his experience in appearing in the Eastern Conference finals five times and the NBA Finals once will help a Lakers team that has had trouble becoming an elite team again. Smart has career averages of 10.6 points, 4.6 assists and 1.6 steals a game. He isn't a reliable 3-point shooter, but after signing a two-year, $10.5 million contract with L.A., he should provide the squad with good, if not great, value.
