Sevier County partners with cities, Smokies national park to develop wildfire protection plan
The county is partnering with the cities of Sevierville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, the Forestry Division of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to develop this plan, which will hopefully create a guide as to what to do to mitigate damage from wildfires. The plan will focus on three key priorities: restoring and maintaining fire-resilient landscapes, creating fire-adapted communities and improving wildfire response.

'By fostering collaboration among community members, elected officials, land managers, emergency responders, local businesses, and utility providers, the CWPP will serve as a living document that evolves to meet the region's changing wildfire risks,' reads a release from Sevier County.
The effort to create CWPP began in January 2024 with a grant from the Tennessee Division of Forestry to create a wildfire plan for all cities, towns, and fire protection districts in Sevier County. A committee with members from each area and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will steer the direction of the plan to ensure the community can work together.

The key goals of the CWPP can be seen below:
Comprehensive wildfire protection planning across all jurisdictions
Wildfire risk assessments for every city, town, and fire protection district
Development of mitigation action plans tailored to each community
Increased collaboration between local, state, and federal fire management agencies
Prioritization of resources and funding to support wildfire risk reduction efforts
Public accessibility through a CWPP hub and GIS platform
County-wide fire prevention and preparedness strategies
According to the release, the plan will be completed in early 2026.

Pittsburgh accepting donations for City-County Building's annual Christmas tree display
Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works Forestry Division is now accepting donations for the annual holiday tree that will be on display at the City-County Building later this year. In mid-November, the selected tree will be brought to its new location in anticipation of Light Up Night, which is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22. The placement of a Christmas tree at the City-County Building remains one of Downtown's oldest traditions. The first tree was placed on the construction site of the City-County Building in 1914, city officials say. Potential trees can be of any evergreen variety and should be a minimum of 40 feet tall. Those interested in donating a tree from their property may contact the Department of Public Works Forestry Division directly at 412-665-3625.

‘I will always be your little girl' Monroe County teen's farewell letters to family bring comfort
MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The parents of a Monroe County teen who died last month found letters she had written to them before her death. Jason and Crystal Taylor are taking it one day at a time, adjusting to life without their middle daughter. Kayla Couch died on May 22 after being diagnosed with brain cancer again. She was 16. 'While I was hauling hay, she'd be practicing cheering. I'd be unloading hay, she'd be over in the field with the cows.' Kayla was a cheerleader at Sequoyah High School and was a member of the Monroe County Rescue Squad. On Sunday, Jason received an unexpected Father's Day gift: notes that Kayla had written to her family before she died. 'Crystal charged her phone back,' he said. 'She wanted a video of Kayla saying 'I love you, Mom,' or anything. As she was going through it, she found them.' In her note to her dad, Kayla said she is 'probably in heaven now,' and that she is thankful he met her mom. 'You stepped up to the plate and became my hero,' she wrote. 'In my eyes, you were nothing 'step,' you stepped up.' Jason said the notes were extra reassurance. Kayla also left notes for her mom and sisters, calling her mom her 'best friend,' and telling her sisters she's watching over them. 'We went to Duke. Once we got back from that, is whenever she got sick the next morning,' Jason recalled. 'So with that, she had already had the notes written, she didn't say nothing about it.' Her dad plans to honor her with an old car he's fixing up at the Jeep Invasion in August. Jason also said Kayla was working to collect pop tabs from aluminum cans for the Ronald McDonald House. She had a goal of collecting 1 million tabs. Her family plans to complete her goal. New artifacts at the Titanic Museum expected to sell for $1 million
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WATE) — Two new artifacts have come to the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge. They are scheduled to go to auction where they are expected to sell for over $1 million, according to a press release. The artifacts are from the passengers Isador and Ida Straus. One is a pocket watch recovered with Isador's body, and the other is a letter that Ida wrote aboard the Titanic. The artifacts will be at the museum until December 5, according to the museum's website. They are scheduled to go to auction in the United Kingdom and are expected to sell for more than $1 million.
