Buick Continues to Cook In China With a New Retro-Futuristic Sedan Concept
is largely forgotten in the US, but in China, it's
a pretty big deal
. If you need proof, just look at the company's latest concept car. The Buick Electra Orbit is a stunning new concept from GM's Chinese subsidiary that "marries the romance of the 1950s with futuristic technology and pure-electric architecture," according to the brand.
Developed entirely in-house by the GM China Advanced Design Center, the Electra Orbit is said to take inspiration from space-age spacecraft, jets, and also Buick concepts from the 1950s. The sleek, uninterrupted curves up front and the massive overhang in the rear are reminiscent of those early flying machines, thanks in part to the metallic paint simply known as "Space."

If the Electra Orbit looks massive, that's because it is. Measuring in at nearly 19.6 feet (6.0 meters) long and over 6.6 feet (2.0 meters) wide, it's longer and about as wide as a Chevrolet Suburban. Those shiny, disc-shaped wheels measure 24 inches in diameter. Four scissor doors open away from the center point of the car, promoting a serious sense of occasion on arrival. Out back, the Electra Orbit uses a pair of deployable wings that rise up and out of the bodywork to improve drag and create downforce at speed.
Despite the Orbit's length, there's only room for four people inside. Focused purely on the comfort of its occupants, the 2+2 seating layout centers around a "wormhole-inspired interface" that serves as an AI assistant, because everything has to have AI to be relevant these days. Thankfully, there's also a ball-shaped controller in the center console for those who want to manually control vehicle functions on the massive "Ring" arch-shaped display, which spans from A-pillar to A-pillar.
'Electra Orbit is a bold exploration of what Buick can be when we blend heritage inspiration with visionary innovation,' Stuart Norris, vice president of design for GM China, said in a statement. 'By reinterpreting space-age motifs and pushing electric-architecture freedoms, we wanted to create a concept that feels both familiar in its Buick DNA and thrillingly new.'

GM doesn't go into much detail about the Orbit's powertrain, saying only that it rides on the company's "dedicated EV platform." It also seems fairly clear there are no plans for production in China or elsewhere.
Designers will instead likely draw inspiration from the Electra Orbit to use on future production cars.

Gold edges up as investors await US-Russia meeting
Gold (GC=F) Gold prices edged higher on Wednesday morning, buoyed by a softer US dollar following mild US inflation data that solidified expectations for an interest rate cut in September. Meanwhile, market participants looked ahead to this week's high-stakes talks between US and Russian officials regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. At the time of writing, gold futures rose 0.2% to $3,404.90 per ounce, while spot gold inched up by 0.1% to $3,357.03 per ounce. "The fall in the USD enabled a moderate bounce in the gold price, with the precious metal oscillating around the $3,350 level ahead of the Trump-Putin meeting on Friday," said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. Read more: London Stock Exchange open to dual listing of Indian companies, says LSEG boss "If the meeting in Alaska doesn't resolve anything and the war in Ukraine continues, gold could be making a push back towards $3,400 once again," he added. The uptick in gold came as US inflation data, released on Tuesday, showed a modest rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which increased by 0.2% in July, following a 0.3% increase in June. Year-over-year, the CPI was up 2.7%, signalling that inflation pressures are cooling. This data reinforced market expectations that the Federal Reserve may soon cut interest rates, which tends to boost demand for non-yielding assets like gold. The decline in the US dollar supported the precious metal's rise, as a weaker dollar makes gold more affordable for holders of other currencies. Oil (BZ=F, CL=F) Oil prices were lower in early European trading, after industry data revealed an increase in US crude inventories, reinforcing expectations that the peak summer demand season is winding down. Brent (BZ=F) crude futures lost 0.2% to trade at $65.16 per barrel, at the time of writing, while West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) futures retreated by 0.3% to $63.02 a barrel. The US driving season typically runs from Memorial Day weekend in late May through early September, and with the end of summer approaching, demand is expected to taper off. Gasoline inventories saw a decline, while distillate stocks experienced a slight increase. Oil investors appeared to be in 'wait-and-see mode' ahead of the meeting between US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, according to ING commodity strategists. "The outcome could remove some of the sanction risk hanging over the market," the ING strategists added. Pound (GBPUSD=X, GBPEUR=X) The pound was higher against the dollar this Wednesday morning and may climb even further as US inflation data reinforced expectations for a Fed rate cut in September. Sterling was up 0.3% to $1.3543 at the time of writing. The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed a year-over-year increase of 2.7% in July, matching the previous month's rise and coming in slightly below the anticipated 2.8% gain. Meanwhile, the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 3.1% in July, higher than the 2.9% increase seen in June and surpassing the consensus forecast of 3%. Fed governor Michelle Bowman had already signalled last week that three interest rate cuts could be on the horizon for the remainder of the year. The US dollar index ( which measures the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.3% to 97.81. China's $11 Trillion Stock Market Stages Steady Resurgence
(Bloomberg) — Chinese stocks have gained ground in recent months despite a lack of major catalysts, with ample domestic liquidity likely to sustain the rally. Mainland households, flushed with record-high savings, are turning to equities for better returns as interest rates continue to drift lower. The amount of margin loans taken out to buy stocks climbed to the highest level since 2015 this week. The momentum is also seen in the monthly average turnover on onshore exchanges, which is on track for a third month of advances. Sunseeking Germans Face Swiss Backlash Over Alpine Holiday Congestion To Head Off Severe Storm Surges, Nova Scotia Invests in 'Living Shorelines' New York Warns of $34 Billion Budget Hole, Biggest Since 2009 Crisis Five Years After Black Lives Matter, Brussels' Colonial Statues Remain For Homeless Cyclists, Bikes Bring an Escape From the Streets That's pushed up the benchmark CSI 300 Index ( 16% from its April low, following months of range-bound trading. While Beijing hasn't announced any major stimulus or finalized a trade deal with the US, markets have reacted positively to recent moves to curb excessive price wars and overcapacity in some sectors. These steps are seen by investors as a way to ease deflation and boost corporate earnings, which could provide further support to the market gains. 'Funds with a high risk appetite are gradually increasing their allocations to stocks, against the backdrop of low interest rates, a lack of good investment options and a surplus of liquidity,' said Fu Zhifeng, chief investment officer at Shanghai Chengzhou Investment Management Co. 'The trend has just started building momentum and I don't see any signals for it to reverse anytime soon.' A gauge of onshore-listed small-cap stocks, long favored by individual investors, has surged to an eight-year high. The measure's 14-day relative strength index has remained above the overbought level of 70 for seven-straight sessions. Cinda Securities Co. expects retail flows to accelerate in the second half of the year amid optimism over the government's five-year development plan. That may be supported by higher money growth locally. Liquidity supply in China rose 4.6% in June from a year ago, the largest rise in more than two years, latest data showed. Ample liquidity could offset any potential outflows as some investors take profit after the recent rally. 'There's little room for a major correction,' said Zhou Nan, founder and investment director of Shenzhen Long Hui Fund Management Co. He expects some selling pressure as the Shanghai Composite Index approaches 3,700, a nearly four-year high. The Shanghai gauge climbed as much as 0.4% on Wednesday, surpassing the 3,674 intraday high reached on Oct. 8 following a central bank policy blitz — a resistance level closely watched by local investors. A higher weightage of high-performing bank stocks on the measure has helped it outperform the CSI 300 Index this year. Still, skeptics argue that the rally is unlikely to sustain without a meaningful recovery in earnings and economic prospects. The 'divergent performance among sectors suggests there is no systematic improvement in the market yet,' said Shen Meng, director at Beijing-based investment bank Chanson & Co. That said, improving trade ties with the US is spurring some risk-on sentiment. Strategists at Citigroup Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) have raised views on the country's stocks. Meanwhile, local insurance funds offer further support for equities. 'This round of market rally, fueled by investor optimism, is far from over,' given that residents' willingness to invest in stocks has increased, China International Capital Corp. analysts including Li Qiusuo wrote in a Monday note. Tencent's Revenue Beats Estimates in Boost for AI Ambitions
(Bloomberg) -- Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s revenue beat estimates, bolstering investor expectations that its expanding gaming and social media portfolio will provide dry powder for an intensifying global AI race. Sunseeking Germans Face Swiss Backlash Over Alpine Holiday Congestion To Head Off Severe Storm Surges, Nova Scotia Invests in 'Living Shorelines' New York Warns of $34 Billion Budget Hole, Biggest Since 2009 Crisis Five Years After Black Lives Matter, Brussels' Colonial Statues Remain For Homeless Cyclists, Bikes Bring an Escape From the Streets Revenue for the three months ended June rose to 184.5 billion yuan ($25.7 billion), versus an average estimate of 179 billion yuan. Net income for the period came to 55.6 billion yuan, compared with projections for 50.8 billion yuan. China's most valuable company is accelerating spending on AI research and product rollouts after a string of rivals launched open-sourced models to compete with the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. The Shenzhen firm counts on marquee gaming franchises and super-app WeChat to fund such initiatives. Yet a potential global downturn this year — coupled with the Trump administration's tariffs campaign – threatens to hurt Tencent's sprawling online businesses from payments to advertising and cloud computing. The world's biggest games publisher kicks off a closely watched earnings season for Chinese big tech firms, which are riding investor euphoria around the breakout success of DeepSeek. After years of regulatory scrutiny and Covid-era disruption, the country's biggest tech firms are once again ramping up deals and competing fiercely for users to propel growth. Like Big Tech in the US, much of the industry's attention is also focused on how to invest in AI — and monetize it. Tencent alone has gained more than $170 billion this year, though some analysts think it remains undervalued relative to peers such as Meta Platforms Inc. The company's AI efforts include integrating DeepSeek's R1 and own Hunyuan model into a suite of products and games, while renting out computing to clients keen to train or run AI systems. Yet its 30% gain in 2025 that trails Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s, whose Qwen family of models consistently ranks among the industry's top performers. What Bloomberg Intelligence Says Tencent's earnings growth is likely to decelerate to about 9% in 2Q, down from 25% during 1Q, following the seasonal peak in its domestic video game business. The internet giant should remain relatively unaffected by US tariffs, though its fintech and ad divisions remain exposed to potential second-order effects, should China's economic growth slow in 2H. Tencent's growth is set to normalize this year after an exceptional 2024, with earnings growth due to decelerate to the mid-teen percentage range. Geopolitical pressure and rising economic headwinds present risks to 2H, though Tencent is better positioned to navigate these than its e-commerce peers. - Robert Lea, analyst Click here for the research. Tencent is trying to sustain growth at its games division, still the largest source of the company's revenue. It scored some of 2024's biggest hits from to . Beyond earnings, the market is looking forward to next Tuesday's launch of , a highly-anticipated smartphone version of Riot Games Inc.'s seminal title. The title should help drive Tencent's revenue from later this year through the first half of 2026, according to Goldman Sachs Inc. Other upcoming titles include an open-world game set in the universe. The company is set to unveil new ones next week at Gamescom in Germany. It's also more focused on protecting margins than some of its rivals. Tencent has stayed out of an increasingly cutthroat battle in e-commerce, where Alibaba, Meituan and Inc. have sought to outspend each other with subsidies. The trio is slated to report earnings in coming weeks, starting with on Thursday. With a billion-plus users, WeChat remains Tencent's most dependable asset as it shoulders more burdens on monetization in areas from mini-games to advertising. The ubiquitous Chinese app is carrying more advertising within features like search and short-video feeds, chipping away at TikTok-owner ByteDance Ltd.'s key revenue stream. Yet WeChat Pay faces a renewed battle with Alibaba-affiliate Ant Group Co., which has garnered 100 million users for a tap-to-pay feature at stores and restaurants. Tencent hopes WeChat will remain the killer app of the generative AI era. Its unique ecosystem of mini-programs, executives argue, could evolve to become an operating system for agentic AI tools that autonomously perform tasks on behalf of users. The company has rolled out a series of AI tools for game designers to generate in-game avatars and assets. --With assistance from Luz Ding, Henry Ren, Vlad Savov, Ville Heiskanen and Amy Thomson.
