Chloe Peterson, IndyStar: Fever 72-70
"With the news of Caitlin Clark's quad injury putting her out two weeks, this one has likely become much more of a toss-up than the Fever would like.
"The Mystics have impressed, relatively, to start the season. They had three top-6 picks in the draft in Sonia Citron (No. 3), Kiki Iriafen (No. 4) and Georgia Amoore (No. 6). Amoore suffered an ACL injury in training camp, but both Citron and Iriafen hit the ground running in the starting lineup. Iriafen has recorded four straight double-doubles, and Citron is averaging 15.4 points per game.
"The Mystics are 2-3, sure, but all of those losses have been close — including a three-point loss to Las Vegas, two-point loss to Golden State, and six-point loss to Phoenix. Washington also has wins over Atlanta and Connecticut.
"Indiana has a tight window to figure out new rotations without Clark, and there will likely be multiple adjustments to figure out who's running point. With the way the Mystics are playing, it really could go either way; but this is one the Fever need to win to stay on track, especially with Clark out."
Fever: Caitlin Clark (quad) is out. The Fever anticipate her missing two weeks.
Mystics: Georgia Amoore (ACL) is out.
Fever second-year guard Caitlin Clark is out with a left quadriceps injury. She dealt with a similar injury during preseason, but team officials say this one is different.
Fever coach Steph White added that she does not know the specific strain of Clark's injury. Based on her reevaluation timeline of two weeks, however, it is likely a Grade I or II strain. A Grade I strain is mild and only involves a small number of muscle fibers, according to the Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Centre, and there is usually pain and tightness but no loss of function. It usually takes two weeks to recover from a Grade I strain. A Grade II strain is slightly more serious, where there would be some loss of function, and that typically takes 4-6 weeks for a full recovery.
In four games this season, Caitlin Clark averaged 19.0 points, 9.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals, making 31.4% of her 3-pointers.

Washington legend joins coaching staff for one day

When the Washington Commanders opened Phase 3 of their offseason program this week, they had a special assistant coach. Team legend Brian Mitchell spent Wednesday working with Washington's returners in practice. Before any fans get their hopes up, Mitchell isn't joining the Commanders' staff. Mitchell joined Washington for one day, offering his expertise to his former team. Mitchell, who co-hosts the local radio show, "BMitch and Finlay," on 106.7 The Fan, has lived in the Washington area since his NFL retirement. Advertisement You can't blame the Commanders for wanting Mitchell to work with the returners. Mitchell holds the NFL record with 14,014 kick return yards and 4,999 punt return yards, and is second all-time, behind only Jerry Rice, with 23,330 career all-purpose yards. Yet, somehow, Mitchell is still not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Devin Hester made the Hall of Fame as a return man last year and gave Mitchell a shoutout, saying he also belongs in Canton, Ohio. Washington head coach Dan Quinn was thrilled to have Mitchell. "Brian Mitchell came through and spent some time with returners today," Quinn said on Wednesday. "With over 19,000 return yards and 13 special teams touchdowns, I had invited him in the winter: 'Hey man, do you mind coming through for a day and hanging out with us?' And so couldn't think of a more ideal person to share some insights and some ideas about returning. I'd asked him, he had not returned a kick until he got to the NFL. Now that was just wild man. Like how, what a work ethic it takes to say, yeah, I'll figure it out. Like, I'll find my way whether I'm playing running back or returning kicks or punts or covering kicks, like that's a real one. So, all that said, let's get rocking with you guys and start the day.' Among Washington's top return candidates is rookie wide receiver Jaylin Lane. The fourth-round pick from Virginia Tech could make an immediate impact for the Commanders in the return game. Second-year wide receiver Luke McCaffrey did a solid job as Washington's kickoff returner late last season when taking over for injured running back Austin Ekeler. Commanders announce addition of two Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship applicants for 2025

One of the things football fans fail to consider is what a professional athlete does after retirement. Whether it's football or another sport, retirement comes much earlier in life than it does for 'typical' jobs. These athletes are retiring in their 30s, sometimes their 20s, and some players are forced to quit playing before they ever get the chance to be a professional. What happens when you retire at the age of 35, and now you don't know what you're going to do for the rest of your life? The NFL has a path for former college and professional football players to remain connected to the sport they love in the way of scouting. Advertisement 'The Nunn-Wooten Scouting Program offers a unique opportunity for former players to learn more about this important profession,' said Troy Vincent, the NFL's Executive Vice President of Football Operations. 'Scouting is a critical function for all NFL teams. Identifying talent and building rosters strategically are keys to every team's success.' Those who wish to take this path have to meet one of three prerequisites: Be a former player, be a former college football player, or be a current college football employee working in recruiting/personnel. If they meet those requirements, they can apply for the fellowship, where they will select five teams they are interested in working with. For the 2025 season, the Washington Commanders are bringing in Andrew Dowell, a former NFL player, and Luke Carr, a current college football employee. Powell and Carr will join the Commanders for the remainder of the offseason workouts and two weeks of training camp in July. They will learn the importance of scouting, how to watch film and write evaluations, and assist in training camp activities from a personnel perspective. Advertisement Applications for the Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship are accepted through June 13, 2025, and all fellowships will conclude by July 31.
