WNBA Rookie Sends Clear Caitlin Clark Message After Sun Defeat Fever

WNBA Rookie Sends Clear Caitlin Clark Message After Sun Defeat Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever lost their second game in a row without Caitlin Clark when they fell to the Connecticut Sun by a final score of 85-83. Advertisement Clark is out with a quad injury, and without her, the Fever fell behind by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter. They mounted a rally in the final minutes to make things competitive, but Kelsey Mitchell's potential game-tying jumper just before time expired was no good. Sun guard Saniya Rivers, who had 12 points and six assists, admitted that her team wanted to take advantage of Clark's absence. "We knew Caitlin wasn't playing…we really wanted to exploit that," she said. On Friday, Aliyah Boston led Indiana in scoring with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, and dished off eight assists. But without Clark, it lacked that game-breaking threat that could at least keep things close throughout. Advertisement Indiana came into this season considered a legitimate championship contender, especially since it had brought in veteran two-time All-Star forward Natasha Howard and six-time All-Star wing DeWanna Bonner. But Clark is expected to miss a total of about two weeks due to her injury, and her absence could put a sizable dent in their record. She is credited with putting women's basketball on the map of relevancy, first at Iowa and then as a pro rookie in 2024. The Fever will have the weekend off before hosting the Washington Mystics on Tuesday. Caitlin Clark's Eye Roll During Indiana Fever Loss Catches Attention

Caitlin Clark's Eye Roll During Indiana Fever Loss Catches Attention originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever are evidently struggling without their star point guard. Caitlin Clark, ruled out for the second straight game with a quad injury, could only sit and watch from the bench as Indiana lost to the Connecticut Sun, 85-83, on Friday night. Advertisement Fever co-stars Aliyah Boston (17 points, five rebounds, eight assists) and DeWanna Bonner (13 points, three 3-pointers) stepped up in Clark's absence. However, Indiana could not overcome two more backcourt injuries to Clark's replacements, as an electric 26-point barrage from Marina Mabrey led Connecticut to the win. Early in the game, the cameras trained on Clark caught the 2024 Rookie of the Year rolling her eyes while she sat on the bench and the action unfolded around her. It was unclear what she was rolling her eyes at, but fans took notice of the clear behavior from the 23-year-old while she spoke with another person in team gear on the Indiana bench. "Her eyeroll here is so dramatic," responded one X user. Advertisement "She's actually so funny," said another. "I clicked back to the game and saw this," noticed a viewer. "Man as soon as i saw this live i knew yall would have it clipped within seconds," wrote a fan. The most popular response to the clip compared her to a famous LeBron James moment. "First off 'Happy international women's day' vibe without the words," said the much-liked reply. Clark has been recognized for her pattern of intensely competitive behavior on the bench since she has been sidelined with the injury. Against the Sun, it was this more light-hearted moment that caught the attention of social media during the loss. Advertisement The Fever have a few days off before their next game against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night. Clark will miss at least that game and next Saturday's rematch with Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky before being re-evaluated for a potential return. Indiana Fever Facing Backlash Over Coaching Decision

Indiana Fever Facing Backlash Over Coaching Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's only six games, of course, and there are plenty of reasons why the Indiana Fever have now fallen to 2-4 after being beaten by a previously winless team for the second time this week. It was Washington on Wednesday, but on Friday, the Fever bequeathed the Connecticut Sun their debut 2025 victory. Advertisement Safe to say it was not supposed to go like this. But early losses to a pair of good teams--the Dream and Liberty--were followed by a quad injury to star guard Caitlin Clark which, in turn, was followed by the two humbling losses this week. No one doubts Clark's star power, of course, but the organization put in too much work to bring in too many reinforcements for the Fever to look this bad without Clark. That starts with coach Stephanie White, returning to the Fever with an impressive in place of Christie Sides. Adding players like DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard and Sydney Colson was supposed to make this a stifling defensive team, but the Sun and Mystics combined to shoot 61-for-129 (47.3%) in the last two games without Clark. Not very stifling. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark talks with head coach Stephanie White before the game against the Washington Mystics at Entertainment & Sports Arena. Mandatory Credit: Emily Faith Morgan-Imagn Images They've also been shockingly bad in getting into transition--they've been outscored, 23-4, in the past two games without Clark. Advertisement There are excuses for all of this, of course. But increasingly, fans are suggesting that the reason the team brought in White, who had a 92-56 record as a head coach coming into 2025, was to guide the Fever through moments like this. And with White falling short, the questin is being raised: Why did the Fever fire Sides in the first place? Sides may have been on the sideline as the Fever started 1-8 last year, but she also resided over their 19-12 bounce-back that landed Indiana in the playoffs. Watching this team struggle without Clark this week under White, it's fair to wonder if the move on Sides was not too hasty. One fan put it bluntly: "I will keep saying, Stephanie White is a terrible head coach, Christie Sides better." Advertisement There was also this, "After 4 gms, I don't see no difference between Christie Sides & Stephanie White coaching but some Fever fans told me she was an upgrade !!" One fan added, "OMG, the Fever absolute (expletive) without CC... they are losing to the worse team in the league at home... Stephanie White was supposed to be the difference as opposed to Christie Sides." And there was this: This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on May 31, 2025, where it first appeared.

Short-handed Fever looking for more fight vs. 0-5 Sun

The Indiana Fever will look for a better result as they deal with the absence of superstar Caitlin Clark when they host the winless Connecticut Sun on Friday in Indianapolis. With the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year sidelined due to a strained left quad, the Fever (2-3) struggled to find their footing and dropped an 83-77 decision to the Washington Mystics on Wednesday. Indiana's Sophie Cunningham labeled the loss a "gut punch," while fellow guard Kelsey Mitchell continued the fight analogy. "We weren't sharp enough to be a contender for anything (versus Washington)," Mitchell added, per ESPN. "I think getting punched in the mouth early is humbling, because it shows where we need to be." Offseason acquisition DeWanna Bonner scored a team-high 21 points for the Fever. The six-time All-Star signed a one-year contract with Indiana after spending the previous five seasons with Connecticut. Sydney Colson scored four points in 31 minutes while starting in place of Clark, who missed a regular-season game for the first time in either her professional or collegiate career. Clark is expected to be out for at least two weeks after sustaining the injury in Indiana's 90-88 setback to the New York Liberty on Saturday. The Sun won't feel sorry for the Fever. Connecticut fell to 0-5 for the first time since the 2020 season after dropping a 109-87 decision to former UConn star Paige Bueckers and the previously winless Dallas Wings on Tuesday. "Until we understand what we're capable of doing and not capable of doing, we will play like that," Sun coach Rachid Meziane said, according to the Hartford Courant. "I've said many times that we have to play as a team, and playing as a team is both sides offensively and defensively. ... At the end of the day, we didn't put our heart on the court. We didn't make the effort to just have a chance to compete." Former WNBA MVP Tina Charles scored a season-high 27 points and Marina Mabrey added 19 in the loss against Dallas. Mabrey is questionable for Friday's game due to an ailing right quad. --Field Level Media
