Magnus Carlsen sets early pace as stars collide at Norway Chess
Magnus Carlsen arrived in vintage form at the start of the Norway Chess tournament. The encounter began inconclusively with the six stars – in ranking order Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Arjun Erigaisi, Gujesh Dommaraju and Wei Yi – all launching a win or two. Gukesh, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Wednesday, won in round three against Nakamura.

After four rounds of the 12 in the double-round Stavanger tournament, Carlsen (Norway) leads with 8pts over Caruana (US) with 7, then Nakamura (US) on 5.5, Erigaisi and Gukesh (India) both on 4.5 and Wei (China) on 4. Norway's special scoring system is three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a replay loss. Draws are played under Armageddon rules which allow for replayed games.

After two frustrating days where his skills were tested, Carlsen finally got back on track with his second win of the event, a hard-fought marathon against Erigaisi which was technically easier than it looked. Carlsen's king gradually infiltrated into the central squares to support the Norwegian's passed pawn in a queen and pawn ending. Queen and pawn against queen would probably be the epitome of Carlsen's trademark grinding style.
After Friday's rest day, the top pairing for the tournament on Saturday will be Caruana v Carlsen, a 2018 world title rematch and also a meeting of the top two at Stavanger.
The England and British Championships, World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships are all coming up in the next few weeks, so it will be an important time for young English talents. The soundest approach is the most stable: to aim for consistent results and high percentages rather than conjuring up dreams of instant glory.

Paul Doyle, wearing a black suit, white shirt and gray tie, looked emotional and hung his head during his initial court appearance in Liverpool Magistrates' Court. Doyle, 53, is charged with dangerous driving and six serious assault charges alleging that he caused or tried to cause grievous bodily harm to the two children and four adults who suffered the worst wounds among the 79 people injured, prosecutor Philip Astbury said. 'He used his vehicle deliberately as a weapon to injure those individuals,' Astbury said. Doyle, who spoke only to confirm his name, address and birth date, did not enter a plea. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted. Doyle's case was transferred to Liverpool Crown Court, where a different judge scheduled an Aug. 14 hearing for him to enter pleas to the charges. His trial date was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 24 and was expected to last three to four weeks. Doyle's defense lawyer did not ask for bail and he was returned to jail. District Judge Paul Healey ordered that the victims' names not be published. The city had been celebrating Liverpool's record-tying 20th title when the Doyle allegedly turned down a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. Police said they believed Doyle got past a road block by following an ambulance that was trying to reach a possible heart attack victim. Videos showed the car hit and toss a person wrapped in a red Liverpool flag into the air and then swerve into a sea of people packed on the side of the road. At least four people, including a child, had to be freed from beneath the vehicle when it came to a halt. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 78, police said. Seven people remained hospitalized Thursday. The suspect was believed to have acted alone and terrorism was not suspected, Merseyside Police said. They have not disclosed an alleged motive for the act.

Manchester United has been named as the world's second most valuable club — despite their ongoing struggles on the field — behind Real Madrid, while eight Major League Soccer (MLS) teams make the global top 30 list. In figures compiled by Forbes, United are valued at $6.6billion (£4.9bn, €5.82bn) with Madrid topping the global list for a fourth successive year at $6.75bn (£5.01bn, €5.95bn). Advertisement The figures are based on club accounts for 2023-24, when United finished eighth in the Premier League — their lowest league finish since 1990 — and missed out on Champions League qualification, although they did win that season's FA Cup. The club finished 2024-25 in 16th and without a trophy, but did reach the Europa League final. The data outlines how Madrid became the first soccer club to surpass $1bn (£740million, €880m) in annual revenue with $1.13bn (£840m, €1bn) for 2023-24; the NFL's Dallas Cowboys are the only other sports club to have surpassed Madrid's figure. Madrid's figures were boosted by winning the 2023-24 Champions League, which bolstered their accounts with $154m in prize money. Forbes say that alongside published accounts, their data is drawn from 'team executives, soccer team investors, credit rating agency reports and sports bankers, as well as the annual Deloitte Football Money League report and the soccer finance reporter known as Swiss Ramble'. Revenues in MLS are low, clubs rarely turn a profit and they are unable to tap into UEFA's money on offer in European competition. So why do its clubs feature so prominently on the list? Forbes highlight that European leagues have their own unique challenges, which either are not applicable to MLS sides or less relevant. Forbes say European valuations may be impacted by factors such as 'significant debt, restrictive ownership requirements, underwhelming rises (or even declines) in media rights fees, and bureaucratic red tape that makes stadium improvements difficult.'
