Hot-air balloon inferno over Brazil tourist town Praia Grande kills eight
It was the second fatal balloon accident in the vast South American country in less than a week.
'Eight fatalities and 13 survivors,' Santa Catarina state governor Jorginho Mello said on X.
Videos taken by bystanders and carried on Brazilian television showed the moment when the balloon erupted in flames above a rural area outside the Atlantic coast town of Praia Grande, a tourist hotspot popular for hot-air ballooning.
The basket carrying the passengers plummeted dozens of meters to the ground in flames. Other images showed some of the passengers jumping.
The 13 survivors were treated at hospitals, firefighters said.
Officials at Our Lady of Fatima hospital said of the five survivors treated there, three were in stable condition with minor injuries and two had already been discharged.
Information about the other survivors was not immediately available.
An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident. Weather conditions were clear at the time.
'I want to express my solidarity with the families of the victims,' Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a statement.
The pilot told officials the fire was sparked by a blowtorch — used to ignite the balloon's main flame — in the basket, Tiago Luiz Lemos, a police official in Praia Grande, told local media.
The pilot tried to bring the balloon down as soon as the fire erupted, 'and once it was close to the ground, he told the passengers to jump from the basket. But some of them couldn't do it and the fire grew,' the official said.
Four people were burned to death and four others died from injuries sustained in the fall, fire department official Zevir Cipriano Junior told reporters.
One witness told the Razao newspaper that he saw 'two people falling, they were on fire, the basket broke off and the balloon fell.'

Bomba believes in starting them young when it comes to fire safety
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) believes it is important to introduce fire safety education in communities by involving all age groups, especially children. Aiming to strengthen education by emphasising the principle of "prevention is better than cure', its awareness programmes start for children from as young as five years using a phased, community-based approach, says department director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad (pic). "We begin with Kelab Bomba Cilik for children aged five to six, where they are given basic fire safety lessons and early exposure to water hazards, as the department also serves as the secretariat of the Water Activities Safety Council,' he said when interviewed recently. ALSO READ: Stricter fire safety rules soon "When they are involved from a young age, they indirectly become part of the firefighters' family, which helps us engage with the community more effectively,' he added. He said this education continues at secondary level through the Kadet Bomba programme, while at tertiary institutions, Fire Brigades have been set up in 12 institutions offering diploma and Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) qualifications, along with the Kor Siswa Bomba in three public universities. Nor Hisham said the department also launched the Bomba Junior programme last year to expand fire safety education in primary schools. "Previously, no such programme existed at the primary level. We initially targeted 16 teams, but the response was overwhelming and now we have 273 teams,' he said. "Our programmes aim to educate the public on fire prevention and emergency safety, train them to be more prepared while awaiting rescuers, and instil the understanding that safety is a shared responsibility, not solely the authorities',' he said. Community engagement is also promoted through talks, exhibitions, fire drills and initiatives such as "One Home, One Fire Extinguisher" and Sedia Urus Risiko Isirumah (Suri), with more than 12,000 programmes planned yearly. Meanwhile, Nor Hisham said no fees are charged for events held at fire stations, except when the hall facilities are used. "When programmes are held at stations under the Community Fire Learning Centre (CFLC) initiative, we usually ask for 15 minutes to provide a fire prevention briefing,' he said. He noted that CFLC brings firefighters closer to the community and reflects the department's commitment to providing the best public service. "As a government agency, we take this opportunity to provide a positive narrative about public service delivery. 6 dead after light aircraft crashes in Kenyan capital
Crashes involving light aircraft are relatively common in eastern Africa. (EPA Images pic) NAIROBI : A small plane carrying medical staff crashed in a densely-populated neighbourhood in Kenya's capital this afternoon, killing six people, local authorities said. The Cessna plane, run by Amref Flying Doctors, came down as it was flying to Hargeisa, the capital of Somalia's breakaway territory of Somaliland, the charity said in a statement. Kiambu county commissioner Henry Wafula said the four people on board and two people on the ground were killed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the plane took off from Wilson Airport at 2.14pm and lost contact with air traffic control three minutes later. 'We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission,' KCAA said in a statement. One witness, who asked not to be named, told Reuters she heard a loud sound, then saw a fireball and debris scattered over the neighbourhood. Unverified videos shared on social media showed firefighters trying to douse burning debris inside what appeared to be a residential compound. Crashes involving light aircraft are relatively common in eastern Africa. In April last year, Kenya's military chief was among 10 people killed when their military helicopter crashed shortly after take-off.

Historic Spanish mosque-cathedral reopens after blaze
Officials are expected to give an update on the extent of the damage at the mosque-turned-cathedral later today. (AP pic) MADRID : A historic mosque-turned-cathedral in Cordoba in southern Spain reopened today, a day after a blaze that was quickly contained by firefighters, a spokesman for the site said. Considered a jewel of Islamic architecture, the site opened at 10am and will close at 7pm – its regular hours – with only the area where the fire broke out cordoned off to the public, he told AFP. The spectacular blaze broke out yesterday at about 9pm, raising fears for the early medieval architectural gem and evoking memories of the 2019 fire that ravaged Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Widely shared videos had shown flames and smoke billowing from inside the major tourist attraction, visited by two million people per year. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze and Cordoba's mayor, Jose Maria Bellido, told Spanish media said the monument was 'saved'. 'Luckily, the rapid and magnificent intervention of the Cordoba firefighters averted a catastrophe. The fire is now out, and tonight firefighters and local police teams will remain on site to avoid any risk,' he added on X late yesterday. Officials are expected to give an update on the extent of the damage later today. ABC and other newspapers reported that a mechanical sweeping machine had caught fire in the site. The site was built as a mosque – on the site of an earlier church – between the 8th and 10th centuries by the southern city's then Muslim ruler, Abd ar-Rahman, an emir of the Umayyad dynasty. After Christians reconquered Spain in the 13th century under King Ferdinand III of Castile, it was converted into a cathedral and architectural alterations were made over following centuries.
