Raising money for students in need
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A fundraising effort to benefit the Title 1 schools in the Sioux Falls School District has wrapped up for another year.
Operation Hope & Caring raises money each school year to benefit students in Sioux Falls most affected by poverty.
'If we weren't able to provide that, I think there were a lot of kids that would go without and that hurts you as an adult to see kids having to struggle like that,' Levo Credit Union Vice President of Marketing and Business Development Jen McKeown said.
Operation Hope & Caring has provided more than $109,000 in assistance since 2017, and will add nearly $19,000 to that total this year.
'This is the second highest amount that we have raised for Operation Hope & Caring even though the Storm didn't have a season,' McKeown said.
Levo Credit Union started Operation Hope & Caring alongside the Sioux Falls Storm, and last year raised a record $20,000.
Helping sexual assault survivors through hygiene drive
'I was a little anxious when we started out the fundraising because the Storm had just announced that they were not going to be able to have a season. But they stepped up and wanted to help anyway, so they donated the use of Air Madness for a fundraiser that raised over $10,000 for Operation Hope & Caring,' McKeown said.
'It's very nice for us to be able to share with our families that our community cares about them enough to donate money that we can use when a family is in need,' Garfield Elementary Principal Kristin Skogstad said.
Skogstad said the school uses the dollars to stock its care cabinet.
'There are sometimes when families have come in and expressed a need for food or we have toilet paper, infant formula, we have laundry soap,' Skogstad said.
The school also washes clothes for kids who don't have access to laundry facilities.
'We were able to purchase a washer and dryer several years ago with some of the money from Operation Hope & Caring, and our lovely clerical do at least one load of laundry a day,' Skogstad said.
Skogstad says Operation Hope & Caring helps empower the kids to feel good about themselves.
'They'll come with that big person burden of knowing they don't have anything in their cupboards at home and so they'll come and shop and take what their family needs, and on the outside it says 'take what you need',' Skogstad said.
Helping students get a leg up.
Levo Credit Union partnered with Air Madness and KELOLAND Media Group on Operation Hope & Caring this year, and presented the check for nearly $19,000 to the school district at Monday's school board meeting.

Construction affects Sioux Falls city parks
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — New construction projects this week will impact people's access to a pair of Sioux Falls city parks. Starting Monday, crews will begin replacing the Riverdale Park asphalt bike trail with concrete. No access to the bike trail loop will be available from the park. Instead, you can get to the trail from either Rotary or Cherry Rock parks. The work should be finished next month. Also Monday, crews will be installing utilities at the new pool in McKennan Park. That means South 4th Avenue between Park Drive and 26th Street will be closed to traffic. The work should be finished in two weeks. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Recess program gets dogs out of the shelter for a day
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Christie Schenefeld started fostering in March, but as summer approached, her schedule got busier. Just when she thought she had to take a break from volunteering, she found out about Rescue Dog Recess. 'It's just so fun seeing the dogs start out their day. Just excited to get out, go on an adventure and come back and they're resting their head on your arm or they're curled up snoring in the seat next to you. It's just so rewarding to see them just get to be dogs and be happy,' said Christie Schenefeld, a volunteer at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Crews respond to fire at Delux Motel on West 12th Street Schenefeld has taken dozens of dogs on field trips since the program launched in April. Some of her favorite stops are Great Bear and Falls Park, but they all end the same way. 'And then, of course, you gotta finish up with a treat or a pup cup,' said Schenefeld. None of this would be possible without the employee who started the program. 'I saw other shelters kind of do a doggy day out program. But I like to be unique, so I named it something different. Rescue Dog Recess. Because we want them to have fun at recess like kids,' said Lexy Nuttbrock, a kennel supervisor and foster coordinator at the SFAHS. Even though Rescue Dog Recess is still in its first few months of operation, it's been successful so far. 'We've seen less behavior problems. Dogs are walking better on leashes, they are being introduced to strangers better, less reactions. This is a super stressful place. So we are seeing dogs being allowed to be dogs,' said Nuttbrock. 40% of the dogs who went out for recess last month found their fur-ever homes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
