'Izza': The Arabic word for dignity also denotes honour and respect

The National02-05-2025

There is a famous Arabic saying that has been attributed to many people in history, which translates as: 'Have mercy on the once-honourable who has been humiliated, the once-rich who has become poor, and the scholar who is lost among the ignorant.' The phrase invites both humility and caution. It asks for mercy towards those who have lost what they once had. Izza, this week's Arabic word, means dignity, honour, power and respect, depending on the context of its use. Izza and words branching from it appear 11 times in the Quran. While some attribute its origin to a similar word in Hebrew, others say it comes from the name of a pre-Islamic deity, Al Uzza. Izza is also a girl's name, while Izzat and Mutaz, which means dignified, are boys' equivalents. Azeez, which comes from izza, is used to address someone who is honoured, respected and beloved, with azeezy used in the possessive. The Arabic phrase for 'once honourable' is azeez qawm, literally translating to 'dignified by his people'. Other languages have similar-sounding words. Recently, British singer Ed Sheeran released a song titled Azizam, which is the Persian variation of azeezy. Izza can also mean power and honour, as used in a verse from the Quran which reads: 'And to Allah belongs all honour, and to His Messenger, and to the believers.' Self-respect in Arabic is izzat al nafs, which translates to 'dignity in oneself'. Azeez al nafs describes a person who is humble and treats everyone equally and fairly. Speaking to someone, to say uizuka means 'I cherish you'. A funeral is called azaa which refers to mourners taking part in a dignified ceremony after the deceased is buried. Famous Arab celebrities named Izza (or its equivalent) have included Egyptian actors Ezzat Abou Aouf and Ezzat El Alaili, as well as Lebanese sculptor Ezzat Mezher.

Ed Sheeran sings in Punjabi in new song Sapphire

Ed Sheeran has paid tribute to India in his new song, singing a line in Punjabi. In Sapphire, the English singer breaks into Punjabi for one line in the chorus, which translates to 'they sparkle just like stars'. Sheeran has collaborated with Indian playback singer Arijit Singh on the new single, a collaboration he described as the 'final jigsaw piece' in recording the track. Singh also plays the sitar on the track. The video for the song is filmed in various locations around India, and was shot earlier this year while Sheeran was on tour in the country. ' Sapphire was the first song I finished for Play that made me know where the album was heading,' Sheeran wrote about his new single in an Instagram caption. 'It's why I finished the recording process in Goa surrounded by some of the best musicians in India.' Speaking of filming the video in India, he wrote: 'We wanted to showcase the beauty and breadth of the country and its culture.' He added that the song is his favourite on the album and he has recorded a version entirely in Punjabi with Singh, which he promises 'will come out in the next few weeks'. Sheeran took his +−=÷× Tour (said The Mathematics Tour) to India in January and February this year, performing seven dates in six locations, last year he also performed a standalone night in Mumbai. Sheeran's upcoming album, Play, is set to be released in September. He has already released singles Old Phone and Azizam, as well as Sapphire. Azizam is heavily influenced by the region. The song was co-written by Swedish–Iranian songwriter Ilya Salmanzadeh. Discussing the single on Instagram, Sheeran said the track draws on Iranian musical influences, which he found echoes aspects of traditional Irish folk. 'I wrote Azizam after Ilya suggested trying out music inspired by his Persian heritage and culture,' he said. 'I love learning about music and different cultures the more I travel and connect with people. It was like opening a door to a completely new and exciting world. 'I loved how a lot of the rhythms, scales, melodies and instruments were different but similar to the Irish trad music I grew up with. It showed me that music connects us all – it really is a universal language. This whole album is about being playful, explorative and celebratory.' In March, a large heart-shaped balloon was put on display in at Bla Bla beach club and dining venue in Dubai's JBR district to promote the single.

Create Production brings Vox Cinemas' sonic identity to life with Hans Zimmer

Create Production has joined forces with Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment to unveil Fall in Love with Film, Vox Cinemas' latest brand film that signals a new chapter for the region's premier cinema operator. The cinematic tribute, released in celebration of Vox Cinemas' 25th anniversary, is underscored by an original score and sonic identity created by legendary composer Hans Zimmer. The emotionally rich film is a love letter to the power of cinema, weaving together themes of love, community, and escapism. At its heart is the story of a young boy growing up with the cinema as his lifelong companion. The narrative is brought to life by Zimmer's evocative score, blending Hollywood-style orchestration with 90s nostalgia and Arabic musical elements. As part of Vox's broader 'experience-first' strategy to reconnect with audiences, Create Production oversaw the entire creative process, from script development to full-scale production across eight regional markets. The campaign produced more than 85 assets in a variety of languages, formats, and platforms, ranging from IMAX screens to social media reels. Create also led localisation efforts across four languages and dialects, ensuring cultural resonance throughout the region. Muhammad Ashraf, Senior Producer at Create Production, said: 'Working alongside the Vox Cinemas team to develop a film worthy of Hans Zimmer's signature sound was a true privilege. We set out to craft a narrative that celebrates Vox's magic and elevates the region's sonic identity.' The brand film is currently screening in Vox Cinemas across the Middle East, with additional distribution on digital platforms, social media, and out-of-home advertising. The custom sonic branding developed for the campaign will continue to roll out throughout 2025, becoming an integral part of the Vox experience—from cinema lobbies to customer service interactions. This project adds to Create Production's portfolio of landmark regional campaigns, continuing its track record of high-profile collaborations, including previous work with Zimmer and large-scale productions across the Middle East.
