Suspect in Charlotte shootout that killed nursing student out on bond after 6 years in jail
CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man charged in the 2019 shooting death of a Charlotte nursing student and mother of two is now out of jail after posting bond this week.
Adonis Smith, now 23, walked free after posting a $10,000 secured bond.
Smith had been behind bars for six years, since he was 17, awaiting trial for his role in a fatal shootout that claimed the life of 27-year-old Kendal Crank.
Crank, an innocent bystander, was on her way to nursing school in March 2019 when she was struck by a bullet during a gunfight at the intersection of East 28th St. and North Tryon St.

Earlier this year, Smith's first trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. In a recent motion requesting bond reduction, Smith's attorneys argued that he had spent nearly a quarter of his life in jail without a conviction and posed no flight risk.
The judge agreed to set the bond at $10,000, which was posted this week.
During the initial trial, Smith claimed he was acting in self-defense, stating he had been shot at by the two other suspects and returned fire without realizing that anyone else had been hurt.
Crank's death sent shockwaves through the Charlotte community. Witness testimony painted a harrowing scene: Crank's friend, Porchia Jordan, described through tears how she saw Crank slumped over in the driver's seat with blood on the dashboard.
With Smith now out on bond, the community and Crank's family await news on whether the case will head back to trial or potentially result in a plea deal.

Propane tank explosion closes taco stand and grocery store in Lenoir
LENOIR, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A propane tank explosion rocked a small shopping area in Lenoir on Tuesday afternoon, damaging buildings and forcing the temporary closure of a popular taco stand and a nearby Mexican grocery store. The Lenoir Fire Department responded to the scene at 1354 Norwood Street SW around 3:15 p.m. after two propane tanks exploded behind Taqueria El Tio Rico. The explosion caused a fire and significant structural damage to the area. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. While the taco stand itself was not directly hit, the blast caused interior and exterior damage to the building it operates from. The nearby small grocery store also sustained damage, prompting both businesses to close temporarily. Officials confirmed the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Inside Stathamism, the New Film About the Reddit Cult That Worshiped Jason Statham
By Rossmen Evans There was a Reddit cult. It called itself Stathamism. It worshipped Jason Statham's character in Crank. It believed that living like Chev Chelios was the only way to be truly alive. That's not a joke. Back in 2019, a user who went by 'Opal' created the subreddit r/stathamism that would become ground zero for one of the weirdest digital rabbit holes the internet has ever seen. The basic idea? Reality was fake, and the only way to stay 'awake' inside it was to keep your adrenaline up at all times. Just like in the movie Crank. The subreddit looked like a joke at first. Users shared memes, screenshots, and video clips. But things started getting serious fast. People began reenacting scenes from Crank. Public stunts. Fights. Car chases. Someone posted a GoPro video of themselves jumping from a roof onto a moving truck. One thread casually discussed heart defibrillators as 'ritual tools.' By the time Reddit took the community down in 2023, there were multiple hospitalizations tied to it. Some were ruled accidental. At least one death was left open by the police. The phrase 'performance suicide' started popping up in reports. Reddit wiped the subreddit. There is little to no information left on the existence of this group. But you know how that goes. Screenshots live forever. Now, two filmmakers — Caden Ahmad and Aryan Chaudhari — are turning the whole mess into a movie. The film is currently in production and is already gaining traction with people who were on Reddit at the time and remember the cult before it got decimated from the internet. 'I thought it was fake at first,' Caden says. 'Then I found a PDF called The Crank Testament. That was when I realized this was something deeper than internet trolling.' The film blends real archival Reddit content, surreal dramatizations, and the kind of grainy, brain-melting intensity that feels pulled straight from the internet's underbelly. It leans heavily into dark comedy, using absurdity as a scalpel to dissect how easily people fall into belief systems built on spectacle and chaos. At its core, Stathamism is Caden and Aryan's sharp critique of America's obsession with true crime, cult narratives, and the way we glamorize extremism when it's packaged like entertainment. The result is as disturbing as it is ridiculous — and that's entirely the point. 'We wanted to explore what happens when irony stops being ironic,' Aryan explains. 'People throw themselves into movements all the time. This one just happened to worship a guy who needs to stay pumped full of adrenaline or die.' Even though the subreddit is gone, echoes of Stathamism still bounce around online. Some YouTube comments mention 'Chev Ascension.' A deleted TikTok audio featuring a slowed down version of the Crank theme was tagged with 'stathamloop.' There are even rumors that an underground Discord server still exists, but no one's been able to verify it. At its core, Stathamism is about how the internet makes anything believable. Even worshipping Jason Statham. Especially worshipping Jason Statham. The film does not answer all your questions. It just asks weirder ones. And honestly, that's probably for the best. Dutch government in turmoil: What to know
The governing coalition in the Netherlands collapsed Tuesday after Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders withdrew his populist Party for Freedom (PVV)'s ministers — escalating an ongoing dispute over the country's immigration and asylum policies. 'I worked hard for 25 years to establish the PVV and make it a major party, so I'm not standing here as someone who had a good day today,' Wilders told Dutch news outlet GeenStijl in a translated interview late Tuesday. 'But it is the best choice, because I'm here for the Dutch, and I also hope that the Dutch people understand why I did this.' The Netherlands will now have a temporary caretaker government, which is expected to be in place when The Hauge hosts the NATO summit in three weeks. Wilders, 61, has long voiced anti-immigration and particularly anti-Muslim positions. Muslims make up about 5 percent of the nearly 18 million people in the Netherlands. The PVV, which has called for banning the Quran and shuttering mosques, won the largest number of seats in the 150-member Dutch Parliament in a November 2023 snap election amid growing concerns about migration. Wilders, who has called for banning asylum-seekers, cited inaction from other parties on tougher immigration policies for the abrupt withdrawal Tuesday. 'We voted for the PVV by 2.5 million people to achieve the strictest asylum policy ever,' he said in the GeenStijl interview. 'These are measures that are desperately needed and that are definitely not in the government's plans.' Prime Minister Dick Schoof, an independent who has been leading the government for less than a year, called the PVV's withdrawal and ensuing government collapse 'unnecessary and irresponsible' in a statement after Wilders's unexpected announcement. 'For many months the government has worked hard to implement (an agreement), but if one party lacks the will to continue, it isn't possible to keep working together,' Schoof wrote. But Wilders accused the opposing parties of stalling and highlighted asylum approaches in neighboring countries such as Germany that had taken place in the meantime. 'If we had not done this, if we had continued while all our neighboring countries were introducing stricter measures, which would make people come to the Netherlands more … where would you go as an asylum-seeker? You would come to us sooner,' the far-right leader said. 'If we had continued with this, then there would hardly have been anything left of the Netherlands.' He also stressed his message with multiple posts on the social platform X, highlighting crime and his calls for asylum restrictions. 'We had no choice. I promised the voter the strictest asylum policy ever, but that was not granted to you,' he said in one post translated from Dutch. The Dutch government will be run under a restricted 'caretaker administration' for several months until elections can be held for a formal overhaul. Leaders have called for elections to take place as soon as possible, but it's unlikely they will happen before October. Schoof plans to remain in the caretaker government until the elections, he said. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed to reporters during Tuesday's press briefing that President Trump plans to attend the NATO summit scheduled later this month in The Hague. The formation of a caretaker government and restrictions it faces means the Netherlands won't be able to formally address Trump's calls for other NATO countries to increase their defense spending ahead of the summit. The country currently spends about 2 percent of its gross domestic product on defense — well below the 5 percent Trump has advocated for across-the-board. Wilders has been nicknamed the 'Dutch Trump,' and many supporters of the U.S. president have backed his populism and hard-line immigration views. Meanwhile, Trump has been at odds with European allies over Ukraine's future amid its ongoing war with Russia and the Ukrainian government's eyes on joining NATO. Trump also has rankled NATO allies with aggressive suggestions about taking over Greenland and pursuing Canada to become the U.S.'s 51st state. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
