Prez Putin dials PM Modi, keeps him in the loop on Alaska meeting with Trump

Former Army Chief General Manoj Naravane emphasized that defense spending is essential for national security and development during the launch of his book in Pune. He argued that such expenditure acts as an "insurance premium" to prevent war and highlighted the importance of preparedness, using Ukraine's situation with Russia as a cautionary example. The Union Budget allocates Rs 6,81,210.27 crore for defense in FY 2025-26.

Defence spending like an insurance premium needed to protect country: Ex-COAS Naravane

Pune, Former Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Naravane on Monday said defence expenditure is not a wasteful expense, but it is an insurance premium paid to ensure that war is not forced upon the nation. Defence spending like an insurance premium needed to protect country: Ex-COAS Naravane In the inter-connected world, India cannot remain insular or cut off from global developments, General Naravane said at the launch of his book 'Cantonment Conspiracies' in Pune. "A Roman scholar in the 5th century AD had said that if you want peace, prepare for war. Why do you want peace? Because peace is a precursor and prerequisite for development. We always use these terms together. "If you have a peaceful environment, only then will you flourish. Only then will your factories function, your children receive a good education, and you attract investment, whether domestic or foreign. But if that peace is required, then you have to prepare for war, and defence preparedness does not come cheap. It comes at a cost," he said. He rejected criticism regarding defence expenditure, stressing that national security cannot be outsourced as it is the primary responsibility of the country to secure itself. "Several people often question whether defence expenditure is really worth it. Others call it a wasteful expense. After all, at the cost of one Rafale aircraft, you can build 20 schools and run them for a year," the former Army chief said. "Expenditure on defence is not a waste. It is an insurance premium. Just as all of us have insurance and pay a premium to cater for an unforeseen event. For extensive coverage, a higher premium must be paid. Similarly, the greater the threats to the nation, the more it will have to be spent on defence," he added. Gen Naravane used an insurance analogy to justify the need for defence expenditure. "Your insurance kicks in only when an incident or accident occurs. In the case of defence expenditure, it prevents the incident from happening in the first place. It prevents war. Therefore, it is much more prudent to spend adequately on defence so that a war is not forced upon you. Because if you look weak, or are perceived as weak, then your enemies will take advantage," he added. Citing the example of Russia and Ukraine, the former Army chief said Ukraine had neglected its defence preparedness. "As they were seen as weak, Russia thought of taking advantage. Within a year of the 2022 invasion, a World Bank report estimated reconstruction costs at USD 400 billion. Had they spent even a fraction of that on defence earlier, they may not have faced this situation," he added. He said that money invested in defence keeps circulating and recycling within the economy, which is beneficial for the country's overall growth. Union Budget has made a provision of ₹6,81,210.27 crore for the Financial Year 2025-26 for the Ministry of Defence . This allocation is 9.53% more than the Budgetary Estimate of FY 2024-25 and stands at 13.45% of the Union Budget, the highest among the Ministries. 'Seriously controversial ': Donald Trump raises concerns over accuracy of voting machines; vows executive order to end mail-in ballot before 2026 midterms

US President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he will lead a movement to end mail-in ballots and voting machines before the 2026 midterm elections, arguing they fuel "massive voter fraud" and erode trust in the electoral process. Sharing a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he plans to sign an executive order targeting what he called 'highly inaccurate' and 'controversial' voting machines, while pushing for a return to traditional paper ballots. He argued that traditional paper ballots with watermarks were faster, more reliable, and would leave 'no doubt' about election outcomes. "I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we're at it, Highly 'Inaccurate,' Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election," Trump posted. "We are now the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting. All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED. WE WILL BEGIN THIS EFFORT, WHICH WILL BE STRONGLY OPPOSED BY THE DEMOCRATS BECAUSE THEY CHEAT AT LEVELS NEVER SEEN BEFORE, by signing an EXECUTIVE ORDER to help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections," he added. Trump further claimed that states act merely as 'agents' of the federal government in counting and tabulating votes, insisting they must follow presidential directives 'for the good of the country.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo He accused Democrats of relying on mail-in voting to remain competitive, pointing to what he called their 'radical left' policies on immigration, gender issues, and social reforms, which he argued made them 'virtually unelectable without using this completely disproven mail-in scam.' 'With their HORRIBLE Radical Left policies, like Open Borders, Men Playing in Women's Sports, Transgender and 'WOKE' for everyone, and so much more, Democrats are virtually Unelectable without using this completely disproven Mail-In SCAM,' he said. Trump further accused his rivals of relying on a 'mail-in scam' to win saying, 'Elections can never be honest with mail-in ballots or voting machines, and everybody knows it, especially the Democrats.' He added that restoring 'honesty and integrity' to the election system would be a core Republican goal going into the midterms. What is mail-in voting? Mail-in voting allows voters to cast ballots by post. It includes absentee ballots, typically reserved for voters unable to reach polling stations due to illness, travel, or other valid reasons, and mail-in ballots, which in many states can be requested by any eligible voter without providing a reason. Mail-in ballot: The actual ballot paper that you fill out and send back by mail under the mail-in voting system. Why is Trump opposed to it? Although mail-in voting has long existed in the US, Trump has repeatedly attacked it since the 2020 presidential election , claiming it enables large-scale fraud. Despite these claims, election officials and courts have found no evidence of widespread fraud linked to mail-in voting.
