Adam Lambert Says ‘Jesus Christ Superstar' Is Supposed to ‘Provoke and Challenge,' Defends Cynthia Erivo's Casting: ‘Encourage the Audience to Expand Their Minds'

Adam Lambert is standing up for his 'Jesus Christ Superstar' co-lead Cynthia Erivo. In an interview with Billboard, Lambert, who plays Judas opposite Erivo's Jesus in the production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' at The Hollywood Bowl, said he is 'excited' to present a depiction of Christ played by a 'female, Black' actress. Erivo's casting has received some pushback from circles who think the holy titular role shouldn't be played by a queer woman of color. 'Her voice, presence, and simultaneous power and vulnerability absolutely blows my mind and working with her has been a dream. I'm excited by the challenge of presenting the audience with a production led by a female, Black 'Jesus' and encourage the audience to expand their minds a bit. Originally utilizing rock and roll, 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is supposed to provoke and challenge, that's the point. And shouldn't the teachings of Jesus transcend gender?' During her own Billboard interview in June, Erivo laughed off the negativity surrounding her casting. 'Why not?' Erivo said. 'You can't please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, 'Oh, it's a musical, the gayest place on Earth.'' Other cast members include Milo Manheim, Raúl Esparza and Phillipa Soo. Josh Gad was slated to join the cast, but dropped out at the last minute due to a complication with COVID. John Stamos filled his spot. The three-night event, taking place Aug. 1 through Aug. 3, is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo. The show will be conducted and music-directed by Tony and Grammy winner Stephen Oremus. How the gender education gap is impacting dating

Marriages had been moving in a "more egalitarian direction" since the mid-20th century, when more women began attending university and entering the job market. But now the trend of women "partnering up with their educational equals" seems to be reversing, with a growing number practicing "hypogamy" – wedding someone of a lower social class or education level. Too picky? Women now outnumber men in higher education in almost all developed countries. In the UK, more women were accepted into university than men for the first time in 1996, and that gap has only grown; in 2024, female students outnumbered male students by 28%, according to government figures. While women's educational advancement is a "cause for celebration", it's also causing "issues" when it comes to heterosexual relationships, said The Independent. There has been an increase in "assortative mating", where people want their potential partners to have the same education level as them, as well as having similar attitudes in areas like politics, personal habits and finances. A 2023 study from the US-based Institute for Family Studies found 45% of single women with a degree said their relationship status was due to an "inability to find someone who met their expectations", said the paper. In her book "Motherhood on Ice: the Mating Gap and Why Women Freeze their Eggs", Yale professor Marcia Inhorn said the women she spoke to were having trouble finding partners who fulfilled the "three 'E's: eligible, educated, equal". And it appears they're not just being "too picky". As part of the study, polling expert Daniel A. Cox surveyed more than 5,000 people, and found his interviews with the male participants "dispiriting"; many were "limited in their ability and willingness to be fully emotionally present and available". 'Romantic pessimism' Women's academic success, coupled with the "male breadwinner norm" that remains a lingering "cultural anchor", gives the "shrinking pool of more successful men tremendous power", said Sarah Bernstein in The New York Times. Social media is "rife with male fantasies", including "beautiful, submissive tradwives" embracing traditional gender roles. But while a small group of rich, successful men are "reaping the benefits", others find themselves struggling to compete in the dating market. "Enter the manosphere", a space filled with "romantic pessimism" and the idea that "modern women are not to be trusted". And women themselves are feeling "similarly despondent" about dating. In fact, according to a study by the Survey Center on American Life, 41% of single people in 2023 had "no interest in dating at all". It's "too soon" to know whether this "gulf in attitudes" among young people today will negatively impact the already "tumbling birth rates", said The Economist. But "early signs are discouraging". Policymakers must tackle the "underlying problems that are driving young men and women apart", starting with figuring out how to make education work for underperforming boys at school. It's not all bad, though. There is some evidence that beliefs are "evolving", said The Atlantic. Christine Schwartz, a sociology professor at the University of Wisconsin, analysed data from the World Values Survey and found that in the countries where hypogamy is more prevalent, people were less likely to agree with the statement "if a woman earns more money than her husband, it's almost certain to cause problems". And while hypogamous marriages used to be more likely than others to end in divorce, recent analyses of marriages in Europe and the US suggests this is "no longer the case". These trends don't necessarily prove a major shift is under way. "But they might offer a reason to be cautiously optimistic about society's ability to adjust to new realities." Fitness influencer Joey Swoll quits social media as Hulk Hogan tribute sparks backlash: ‘I'm done'

A renowned fitness influencer and bodybuilder was chased off social media over the vitriol he received for his tribute to Hulk Hogan following the WWE legend's death. Joey Swoll, the 42-year-old 'CEO of Gym Positivity,' declared Monday that he was 'done' with his online platforms as he apologized for dressing up as the mustachioed wrestling icon, which he claimed was a gift from Hogan himself. 'I owe my followers, my community and all of social media an apology,' Swoll told his 8 million followers in a recorded message from the front seat of his car. Swoll had paid tribute to the late Hogan in a now-deleted video in which he wore a Halloween costume resembling the famed wrestler during a workout at Gold's Gym in Venice, Calif. Hogan, born Terry Bollea, died at the age of 71 on July 24 after suffering a 'serious medical issue' at his Clearwater, Florida home. 5 Fitness influencer Joey Swoll addresses his followers after taking down his Hulk Hogan tribute on July 28, 2025. Joey Swoll/X Swoll was known for making videos where he outed 'gym bullies' and held them accountable for the way they treated others on a mission to create a positive gym environment. The social media influencer said he faced backlash from upset followers during a livestream a day after posting the tribute. 'I would be a hypocrite if I didn't hold myself to the same standards. I am human, I am still growing and learning and I promise to all of you I will do better,' he said. 'I have nothing but love and kindness in my heart, I will continue to try and make the world a better place.' Swoll, whose real name is Joey Sergo, then returned to social media on Tuesday to say he was 'done' and that 'people just wait for a reason to hate you.' 'All the good I've done, all the people I've helped, all for nothing. I truly hope all the people I've inspired do great things in their life and pay it forward to help others and carry on my message,' Swoll wrote on X. 'But no matter how much good you do, people just wait for a reason to hate you and tear you down. You either die a hero, or live long enough to be the villain. Thank you for your support. I am done.' 'Instead of listening and understanding like I should've, I became defensive and said 'I was posting to celebrate the wrestling icon, the person so many of us looked up to as kids that we grew up with. That made us tear off our shirts and take our vitamins and say our prayers,'' Swoll said. Swoll had often recycled the workout video dressed as Hogan. In October 2020, he posted the same clip as Hogan's 'Real American' theme song served as the background music. Swoll claims he was unaware of the extent of Hogan's scandals and later researched the wrestler. 'Since last night I have done a lot of research and learned all of the horrible, horrible things that man has done, which is way more than just making a mistake and being human,' Swoll said. 5 Joey Swoll wears a Hulk Hogan Halloween costume in an old video he reposted to pay tribute to the wrestling icon on July 25, 2025. Swoll said he was met with backlash again, moments later, when he used the word 'colored' instead of the term 'person of color' during the livestream. 'It is a very outdated, very offensive term. Someone educated me and told me that it wasn't ok to use that, which I immediately apologized to everyone and said 'I would never do that again,'' he added.
