Six people died, while several others were injured after stampede broke out at Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar.
Panic gripped the crowd at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar after a rumour spread of an electric wire breaking, causing a stampede which claimed the lives of six people and left several others injured, an official said on Sunday.
Preliminary probe into the incident, which took place on the stairs of the temple, suggests that as the rumour about electric current spread, people attempted to move away, resulting in jostling and they fell over each other, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Parmendra Singh Dobal said, news agency IANS reported.
District Magistrate Mayur Dixit told reporters that the investigators did not get any such indication of wire breaking, and are probing who was involved in the spread of the rumour.
'We found through photos and videos that someone spread the rumour of electric wire breaking, while looking at the injured or the dead, we did not get any such indication… We will investigate who spread the rumour that caused the stampede and a magisterial inquiry will be set up investigating cameras and other means," news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
The Police Control Room was contacted about the incident at around 9 am, after which the cops rushed to the temple, Dobal said.
The State Disaster Response Force and a fire team are at the site carrying out relief and rescue work. Police are collecting forensic evidence, and the situation at the place of worship is now under control, he said.
Thousands of devotees throng the revered temple during the ongoing holy month of Shravan.
According to the eyewitnesses, there was chaos as people started pushing each other while waiting in queues, which resulted in panic and a rush.
