‘Scrubs' Revival Nabs Series Order at ABC, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke Returning

Yahoo4 days ago
Scrubs is officially scrubbing back in.
A long-discussed revival of the 2000s comedy series has landed a series order from ABC, where it's been in development since December 2024 — though series creator Bill Lawrence and members of the cast have talked about reuniting for years before that. Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke, who starred in the original version of the show, have signed on to join series lead Zach Braff in the revival. All three will also be executive producers on the show, which is set to premiere in the 2025-26 season.

'Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together,' Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso) said in a statement.
Scrubs ran for nine seasons from 2001-10, the first seven on NBC and the final two on ABC. The show followed intern John 'JD' Dorian (Braff) as he progressed through his medical career alongside best friend Chris Turk (Faison) and his on-and-off girlfriend and eventual wife Elliot Reid (Chalke). The original series also starred Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, Neil Flynn and Ken Jenkins.
The revival's logline reads, 'JD and Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time. Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.'
Lawrence has said for several years that he'd like to revive Scrubs, saying at an ATX Festival session in 2022 that 'If you ever have an excuse to work with people you want to spend time with anyway, run to it.' One complicating factor is that Scrubs comes from Disney's 20th Television (or, more accurately, its predecessor Touchstone TV/ABC Studios), and Lawrence now has an overall deal at Warner Bros. TV. He negotiated a carve-out in that deal to serve as an executive producer on Scrubs, but he won't be the showrunner.
Those duties will go to Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra, both of whom worked as writers and producers on the original series (Batra also guest-starred in a few episodes). They will executive produce with Lawrence, Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer of Lawrence's Doozer Productions, Braff, Faison and Chalke.
The addition of Scrubs also bolsters ABC's comedy roster, which currently only includes Abbott Elementary and the Tim Allen-led Shifting Gears.
Braff is repped by CAA, Range Media partners and attorney Ken Richman; Faison, by UTA and Fuller Law; Chalke, by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Johnson Shapiro; Hobert, by IAG and Jared Levine; and Batra, by WME and Bruce Gellman of Hansen Jacobson.

David Kaff, who played keyboardist Viv Savage in ‘This Is Spinal Tap,' dies at 79

David Kaff, the British actor and musician who played keyboardist Viv Savage in Rob Reiner's hit 1984 mockumentary 'This Is Spinal Tap,' died Saturday. He was 79. His death was announced in a Facebook post by his band Mutual of Alameda's Wild Kingdom, which didn't specify a cause or say where Kaff died beyond noting that he 'passed away peacefully in his sleep.' 'We are devastated by this event,' the band added in the note. 'David always had a kind word and a quick wit that would slay you where you stand. Then he'd make you smile doing it!' As Savage, Kaff played keyboards in Spinal Tap behind lead singer David St. Hubbins (portrayed by Michael McKean), guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Reiner's film, which followed the band's introduction in a sketch on the 1979 ABC comedy special 'The T.V. Show,' expertly parodied the stylistic excesses of heavy metal — one enduring gag had Tufnel demonstrating that the volume knobs on his Marshall amplifier 'go to 11' instead of the usual 10 — and became a cult favorite eventually inducted into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. The movie spawned a soundtrack featuring original songs written and performed by the actors, including 'Stonehenge,' 'Sex Farm' and 'Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight.' Kaff performed with Spinal Tap on 'Saturday Night Live' after the film's release but left the band before it made a second album, 'Break Like the Wind,' in 1992; he's not expected to appear in a long-awaited sequel to the movie, 'Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,' due in theaters in September. Kaff was born David Kaffinetti in 1946 and co-founded the British prog-rock group Rare Bird, which scored a Top 40 hit in the U.K. in 1970 with 'Sympathy.' In 1972, he played piano for Chuck Berry at a live gig that was recorded for Berry's album 'The London Chuck Berry Sessions,' which spawned the chart-topping 'My Ding-a-Ling.' Information about Kaff's survivors wasn't immediately available.

Beyoncé Gets Another Shot At Thus Far Elusive Emmy Win

Beyoncé may be the most-awarded artist in Grammy history, but thus far the Emmy has eluded the artist who's currently touring her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. She gets another crack at the television honor this year. Her Netflix NFL halftime show Beyoncé Bowl was nominated for outstanding variety special (live), placing it in contention with two Saturday Night Live specials: SNL50: The Anniversary Special and SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert. Beyoncé Bowl, which the artist co-directed with Alex Rudzinski, landed a total of three nominations. Also nominated in the outstanding variety special (live) category are Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, which starred Kendrick Lamar, and The Oscars. The Oscars, which was hosted in 2024 by Jimmy Kimmel, won the award last year, besting The Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show Starring Usher, The 66th Grammy Awards, The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady and The 76th Annual Tony Awards. Beyonce's current Emmy nomination, announced July 15, brings her total to nine. She previously was nominated for her Homecoming documentary in the outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) in 2019, and Homecoming also picked up nominations for outstanding music direction and outstanding writing for a variety special. Other nominations include her Lemonade special (2016), which lost out to The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Prime Time Special in the outstanding variety, music or comedy special category and was also nominated that year for outstanding directing for a variety special; her On The Run Tour special (2015) for outstanding special class program; her Super Bowl halftime show (2013), in the outstanding short-format live-action entertainment program.
