Mumbai: Notices issues to tenants to remove illegal extensions

Time of India05-06-2025
MUMBAI
: After a 35-year-old woman lost her life and another was injured following the collapse of a portion of an unauthorised structural extension of a rehabilitated tenement (RT) building at Byculla (W), the
Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board
is issuing warning notices to tenants of such buildings in the city to remove unauthorised extensions. Unauthorised structural extensions have been made by many tenants of such buildings.
On May 28, a portion of unauthorised structural extensions, protruding beyond the original building line on the fifth floor, which were carried out by tenants of the building, collapsed.
Following the incident, officials of the repair and reconstruction board visited the site and instructed tenants to remove unauthorised extensions. The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board is now issuing warning notices to tenants in reconstructed RT buildings in its jurisdiction.
"The reconstructed tenement buildings were built between 1980 and 1990 after Mhada acquired rights to the buildings, which became dangerous and reconstructed these buildings. The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board carries out regular maintenance of these buildings. There are 388 buildings across the city, but unauthorised extensions have been carried out over the last 10 to 15 years, and some of the buildings are very old. This particular building, which has 193 residential rooms and 11 non-residential rooms, is also very old. We are issuing notices to tenants of these buildings to remove the unauthorised extensions," said a Mhada official.
"Residents carry out these unauthorised extensions as they are hamstrung due to the small size of their rooms. But while carrying out these extensions, they do not take adequate precautions," said a Mhada official.
Activist Santosh Daundkar said, "
BMC
has a dedicated Building and Factory department, which has a designated officer for carrying out action, including removal of unauthorised construction under the MMC Act, and they carry out action accordingly. Mhada also has officials to carry out such action, but they don't carry out any action as required. They only initiate action when an incident occurs. Mhada is lackadaisical when it comes to action against unauthorised construction. It has to be alert and take systemic action against unauthorised construction."

Landslide kills 2 in Mumbai's Vikhroli after heavy rain triggers hut collapse

Mumbai: A three-hour downpour between 1am and 4am on Saturday claimed two lives in Vikhroli's Parksite area, where a landslide buried a hut at Varsha Nagar, killing two members of a family and leaving two others critically injured. Civic officials said the incident occurred around 2:30am when continuous rain triggered a slide of soil and stones from the hillside onto the family's hut. Local police, fire brigade personnel, and residents managed to rescue the four trapped members by 3:30am. They were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, where doctors declared Suresh Chandra Mishra (50) and his daughter Shalu (19) dead on arrival. Suresh's wife, Aarti (45), and son Rituraj (20), sustained major injuries and remain under treatment. Locals said the Mishras, originally from Uttar Pradesh, moved to Mumbai more than 25 years ago. Suresh worked as a security guard at a Hiranandani Complex, Shalu worked at a supermarket in a mall, Aarti is a homemaker and Rituraj is employed at an MIDC warehouse in Powai. But residents and political leaders allege negligence by authorities. "This tragedy is not just a natural disaster but the result of civic and political apathy. Back in May, notices were issued to vacate these homes. We demanded rehabilitation and were assured that Mhada would construct a retaining wall—yet no action was taken," said Amol Matele, Mumbai NCP functionary. Following Saturday's incident, the BMC evacuated nearby homes as a precaution, while disaster management teams continue to monitor the hill. Ram Govind Yadav, Mumbai Congress secretary, who visited the spot, blamed unchecked construction. "The BMC asks families to vacate, but where will poor residents go? They have nowhere else to live," he said. Meanwhile, BJP party worker Sandeep Tripathi questioned the legality of such settlements. "Who gave permission to build houses on hill slopes? Encroachments are growing unchecked. The role of the land mafia must be investigated," he said. Barely four years ago, in a similar incident in July 2021, 10 people, including a minor, were killed in their sleep and one was injured after illegal slums located 500 feet atop Vikhroli's L B S Road came crashing down following incessant rains. Officials termed it a landslide and said that the entire Surya Nagar in Vikhroli West, home to around 35,000 people, was illegal and situated on collector land. ‘BMC set for parivartan, BJP to replace those who looted people,' says Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis at Mumbai Dahi Handi event

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday said that 'parivartan' (change) was inevitable in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. After symbolically breaking the clay pot at the Jambori Maidan Dahi Handi festival in Worli, Fadnavis stated, 'In the coming BMC polls, we will bring the change by replacing those who failed and looted the people.' Exuding confidence that the BJP-led Mahayuti will be able to defeat the combined forces of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, the chief minister said, 'We are confident that the people will judge us on the development agenda. We are committed to serving the people.' 'The results are before the people… the number of mega projects which we have taken up across the city, namely coastal road, MTHL, Navi Mumbai Airport, BDD chawl housing, metro railways, etc…' he added. The BMC has been under the Shiv Sena (UBT) for the last three decades. In 2017, the undivided Shiv Sena and the BJP contested separately despite being alliance partners in the state government. The BJP won 82 seats, just two seats less than the Shiv Sena's tally of 84. However, with a strained relationship between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the BJP, the next BMC polls are expected to be a fiercely contested event. At Ghatkopar, where BJP (MLA) Ram Kadam hosted the Dahi Handi event, Fadnavis lauded the theme. The chief minister said, 'This Dahi Handi at Ghatkopar is dedicated to our Armed Forces. It's a salute to their courage and success. The Indian forces gave Pakistan a befitting reply by entering their territory and destroying their terror camps.' 'Operation Sindoor under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a historic achievement which has been rightly chosen as the theme of this Dahi Handi. It is a tribute to all those who fought bravely and made India proud,' he added. The Dahi Handi is an annual celebration associated with Krishna Janmashtami. The Dahi Handi festival is organised by groups/ communities in their respective areas a day after Janmashtami. Young boys and girls form human pyramids to reach clay pots filled with milk, yogurt, and butter suspended from a height. The team that first breaks the pot is declared the winner. State BJP president Ravindra Chavan said, 'Dahi handi is a festival which brings people together for celebrations across communities, class, and parties.' According to the schedule released by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Fadnavis will visit 14 Dahi Handi events across Mumbai and Thane on Saturday. It includes Worli, Bhoiwada, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Raghunathnagar (Thane), Tembhinaka (Thane), Bhiwandi, Dahisar, and Birivali. Of these 14, at least four Dahi Handis are organised in Thane by Shiv Sena leaders.
