Report: VJ Edgecombe had workout with Sixers to emerge as candidate
The Philadelphia 76ers will have their options for the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft as there are a lot of talented players worthy of that selection. They can turn to guys like Rutgers star Ace Bailey, Baylor's VJ Edgecombe, Texas' Tre Johnson, or Duke's Kon Knueppel.
While many are clamoring for Bailey, there is a school of thought that Edgecombe is going to be the better player long term. He's a maniacal competitor, a superb athlete, gets after it on the defensive end, and has the looks of a future NBA star.
It appears that the Sixers have that same thought process. Per Jake Fischer per Marc Stein's substack:
The prime candidate at No. 3, at this juncture, appears to be Baylor freshman guard VJ Edgecombe, who sources say visited with the Sixers last week. There's an expectation that Philadelphia will bring in Rutgers' Ace Bailey down the road, but I have not heard of a workout that Bailey has scheduled to date.
Edgecombe is said to have impressed with his work ethic, personality and interviews. He went to dinner with Morey and other Sixers higher-ups. Even Tyrese Maxey, sources say, flew in for the occasion. The Sixers are certainly intrigued by what type of defensive complement Edgecombe could provide their All-Star guard, sources say, in addition to his explosive upside on the offensive side of the ball.
Edgecombe's workout with the Sixers is the only known visit for the Bahamian national teamer, sources say. Several teams are of the belief he might only work out with Philadelphia, although it's still very early in the draft process.
If one has been following along with Sixers Wire's draft boards--the latest can be seen here--this shouldn't be a surprise. While Bailey is going to be one of the options the Sixers will look at with the No. 3 pick, Edgecombe figures to be a better player in the long term. That will be up to president Daryl Morey and his staff to figure out, but it appears that they are just as high on Edgecombe as they were left feeling impressed by the workout.

Longtime U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley was named the head coach of MLS NEXT Pro side New York Red Bulls II on Thursday. It is the first head coaching position for Bradley, 37, who worked on his father Bob Bradley's coaching staff with the Norwegian club Stabaek from 2023-24. Bradley will replace Ibrahim Sekagya, who was promoted Wednesday to a spot as an assistant coach for the Red Bulls' first team in MLS. It is a homecoming of sorts for Michael Bradley, who began his professional career in 2004 with the MetroStars, a forerunner of the current New York Red Bulls of MLS. "I couldn't be more excited to come back to where my professional playing career began," Bradley said. "This is a dream opportunity as a young coach. I'm looking forward to working every day with this talented group of players, and I'll give everything to help them take the next step in their careers. "I'm thankful to the club for the opportunity and can't wait to get started." Bradley played with Toronto FC in MLS from 2014-23, recording 16 goals in 258 matches and earning three All-Star nods. Four Gators named Phil Steele Preseason All-Americans Four Florida Gators made the Phil Steele Preseason All-America team this year, according to 247Sports, but none of those names are DJ Lagway. Jake Slaughter headlines the list as an AP All-American at the close of the 2024 season; however, Steele has him on his Second Team. The only First Team member from Florida this year is long snapper Rocco Underwood, who claimed the Patrick Mannelly Award last season as the best at his position. Defensive lineman Caleb Banks is on the Third Team after a strong finish to the 2024 campaign. He had the chance to enter the NFL draft but opted to stay with the Gators for another season. Looking to improve his draft stock, Banks could be among the best linemen in the SEC this season. He had 12 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery over 10 starts last year. Redshirt sophomore Eugene Wilson III is a somewhat surprising addition to the Fourth Team from Steele. Wilson was among the better freshmen receivers two years ago, but injuries slowed him down and forced a redshirt last year. Steele is assuming a return to form from Wilson with DJ Lagway throwing the ball to him.
