AIADMK vs ruling DMK over Anna University verdict: Opposition asks ‘who saved sir'; MK Stalin responds

Hindustan Times3 days ago

A Chennai Mahila Court's verdict on Monday in the Anna University sexual assault case, which sentenced the convict to life imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years without remission, has triggered a war of words between Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK and the main Opposition party, AIADMK.
The court found Gnanasekaran, a DMK supporter, guilty of sexually assaulting a second-year student on the university campus in December last year. Mahila Court Judge M Rajalakshmi, who convicted him on May 28, handed down sentences under 11 separate charges and imposed a fine of ₹90,000.
AIADMK leader and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami accused chief minister MK Stalin and his government of trying to shield another individual allegedly linked to the incident, reportedly referred to only as 'Sir' in the FIR.
In a post on 'X', the LoP reacted strongly to the verdict, 'In this case, the Stalin-led DMK government undertook numerous covert actions to protect the accused, DMK's Gnanasekaran,' Palaniswami wrote in Tamil.
He added, 'Defying all such efforts, through continuous struggle–from public forums to social media–AIADMK has succeeded in ensuring punishment for one of the accused in this case.'
Palaniswami welcomed the verdict. However, he questioned the investigation's integrity, citing the 'unexplained reference' to "Sir" in the FIR.
'Who is that, SIR? Who is the SIR mentioned in the FIR? Why was that SIR ruled out during the investigation? Why did the DMK government rush to conclude this case with only Gnanasekaran being named guilty? Who saved SIR?' Palaniswami's post read.
In a sharp dig at the opposition, Tamil Nadu CM accused them of 'merely pretending to care about women's safety," adding that the probe was conducted in such a manner that the High Court had praised it.
MK Stalin's post in Tamil said, 'The case concluded within just five months and resulted in a severe sentence for the perpetrator. Now that the verdict has been delivered, the Women's Court itself has commended the police for their excellent handling of the case.'
He further accused the Opposition leaders of 'politicising' the incident, saying, 'The attempts by a few narrow-minded individuals to seek political gain even in an injustice suffered by a young woman have been completely shattered by this outcome, ' Stalin added.

Tripura BJP treads cautiously as TIPRA Motha wing threatens statewide shutdown over ‘insult' to Pradyot Kishore

Tripura's ruling BJP on Thursday appeared to play down ally TIPRA Motha's claims that its founder had been insulted by the Gomati district magistrate by refusing to meet him, and accused the Opposition CPM and Congress of trying to win brownie points out of the issue. BJP state spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty said, 'The Congress and CPM are trying to give political colours to a recent undesirable incident between Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and Gomati district magistrate and are trying to gain brownie points over the issue. They are making self-contradictory statements and trying to confuse people to malign the state government on social media.' Chakraborty's comments came as a surprise as tension between the BJP and TIPRA Motha was rather high in the last few days, especially during the shutdown observed by the Youth TIPRA Federation (YTF), the tribal party's youth wing, in Gomati district against the alleged insult to Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and Tripura ADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia. The YTF observed the shutdown on June 2 and kept the Gomati district magistrate's office locked, drawing criticism from the CPM and Congress as the Motha's protest took place amid a prevailing flood situation. Chakraborty's comments also came a day after the YTF threatened to scale up protests. 'If no action is taken against the DM, we will launch a statewide agitation next week. We will announce details of our agitation ahead of launching it,' YTF President Suraj Debbarma told reporters on Wednesday. Political observers had assumed the BJP would take a stern stand, especially since it doesn't need TIPRA Motha to maintain the majority in the Assembly. The party has 33 MLAs in the 60-member House. TIPRA Motha, which has 13 MLAs, had served as the principal Opposition party for nearly a year since the 2023 Assembly elections, after which it switched sides and joined the state government. Chakraborty singled out Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and a 'few others' and said Chief Minister Manik Saha had already asked the chief secretary to investigate the Gomati issue. He further said the chief minister would talk to Pradyot once he returned to the state. The BJP spokesperson said the saffron party, TIPRA Motha and the IPFT were committed to working collectively for the state's development. He condemned what he said were online attempts to create communal sentiments. Stating that the BJP-led state government is working with people from all communities, religious groups, and sects, Chakraborty urged the people to 'stay cautious' about provocateurs. Asked about the YTF's agitations, Chakraborty said the association was free to protest, but urged everyone to keep faith in the chief minister. His comments are considered crucial in the aftermath of the YTF agitation which took place after a 96-hour deadline for the government to take action against the Gomati district magistrate expired. A large number of netizens criticised the YTF agitation that took place while thousands have sheltered in relief camps. Many others supported the right to protest. CPM MLA Chaudhury, who criticised the Gomati district magistrate's refusal to meet Pradyot, also termed the YTF action of locking up the office undemocratic and illegal. 'People suffered a lot due to the agitation…,' he said.

DMK govt funding temple events like no other: Min

1 2 Trichy: No govt has funded temple events as much as the 'Dravidian model' govt did, and tactics to project the govt as 'anti-Hindu' have failed, HR&CE minister P K Sekarbabu told reporters in Nagapattinam on Thursday. He was speaking after participating in the 3,000th temple consecration held under the DMK govt at the millennium-old Agnipuriswarar temple in Thirupugalu. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi also participated. Sekarbabu said the number of temple consecrations under this govt will cross 3,500 by year-end. "The Dravidian model govt has been funding temple development, facilities, religious events, and devotee welfare activities like no other govt. The funding is increasing every year. Chief minister M K Stalin is ready to provide more funds," he said. On allegations by right-wing movements that DMK govt is 'anti-Hindu,' he said: "They tried to weaponize such criticism against the govt. The 3,000th consecration is the answer." Accompanied by officials, Sekarbabu inspected several temples and inaugurated new buildings and facilities in the past two days. At Thulasiyapattinam near Vedaranyam, he inspected the construction of Avvaiyar Manimandapam in progress at Rs19 crore.
