AIADMK vs ruling DMK over Anna University verdict: Opposition asks ‘who saved sir'; MK Stalin responds

A Chennai Mahila Court's verdict on Monday in the Anna University sexual assault case, which sentenced the convict to life imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years without remission, has triggered a war of words between Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK and the main Opposition party, AIADMK. The court found Gnanasekaran, a DMK supporter, guilty of sexually assaulting a second-year student on the university campus in December last year. Mahila Court Judge M Rajalakshmi, who convicted him on May 28, handed down sentences under 11 separate charges and imposed a fine of ₹90,000. AIADMK leader and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami accused chief minister MK Stalin and his government of trying to shield another individual allegedly linked to the incident, reportedly referred to only as 'Sir' in the FIR. In a post on 'X', the LoP reacted strongly to the verdict, 'In this case, the Stalin-led DMK government undertook numerous covert actions to protect the accused, DMK's Gnanasekaran,' Palaniswami wrote in Tamil. He added, 'Defying all such efforts, through continuous struggle–from public forums to social media–AIADMK has succeeded in ensuring punishment for one of the accused in this case.' Palaniswami welcomed the verdict. However, he questioned the investigation's integrity, citing the 'unexplained reference' to "Sir" in the FIR. 'Who is that, SIR? Who is the SIR mentioned in the FIR? Why was that SIR ruled out during the investigation? Why did the DMK government rush to conclude this case with only Gnanasekaran being named guilty? Who saved SIR?' Palaniswami's post read. In a sharp dig at the opposition, Tamil Nadu CM accused them of 'merely pretending to care about women's safety," adding that the probe was conducted in such a manner that the High Court had praised it. MK Stalin's post in Tamil said, 'The case concluded within just five months and resulted in a severe sentence for the perpetrator. Now that the verdict has been delivered, the Women's Court itself has commended the police for their excellent handling of the case.' He further accused the Opposition leaders of 'politicising' the incident, saying, 'The attempts by a few narrow-minded individuals to seek political gain even in an injustice suffered by a young woman have been completely shattered by this outcome, ' Stalin added.

AIADMK defers RS seat allotment, DMDK to reveal poll ties in Jan 2026

Apparently perturbed over AIADMK's decision to defer the allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to it to 2026, the DMDK said it would announce its poll ties ahead of the Assembly election next year. Stopping short of accusing the AIADMK of not honouring its commitment made before the 2024 Lok Sabha election, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth said the AIADMK had already allotted a seat each to Dr Anbumani Ramadoss (PMK) and G K Vasan (TMC) in the past and now it was the turn of her party to get a Rajya Sabha seat. Playing down DMDK's decision to make known its stand on alliance on January 9, 2026, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami told reporters in Coimbatore on June 1 that the ties between the AIADMK and DMDK were smooth and attempts to break them would not fructify. On June 1, AIADMK Deputy General Secretary K P Munusamy announced that DMDK remained part of the AIADMK-led alliance and a Rajya Sabha seat will be allocated to that party in 2026. On May 31, DMDK treasurer L K Sudheesh called on Palaniswami and discussed the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. Responding to the development, Premalatha claimed the AIADMK had committed in writing that it would allot five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat to her party during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. This assurance was given in writing. When we asked him to specify the date, Mr Palaniswami had said the year is not usually mentioned in the letter, Premalatha told reporters here. She did not reveal all these details earlier, as it was the AIADMK's duty to fulfill its commitment. Now we will fulfill our duty by deciding on the alliance at our party meeting in Cuddalore on January 9, 2026, Premalatha told reporters here on June 1 when sought for her reaction. She further said that politics revolved around elections and the AIADMK had fulfilled its responsibility keeping in mind the 2026 Assembly election. We will also do the same, as every political party acts with election in mind. The DMDK would soon announce election-incharge for all the 234 assembly constituencies in the state and commence the poll work, she added. The DMDK general secretary thanked Chief Minister M K Stalin and his DMK for adopting a resolution at that party's general council meeting in Madurai on June 1 paying tributes to DMDK founder Captain' Vijayakanth who died about a year and a half ago.

DMK has betrayed the people of the State, alleges Edappadi K. Palaniswami

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is the party that has betrayed the people of the State, alleged AIADMK general secretary and Opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Mr. Palaniswami told the media in Coimbatore on Sunday that the DMK had passed a resolution at its general council meeting held in Madurai on Sunday calling the AIADMK a party that had betrayed the State. When former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was in power and later when he took over as the Chief Minister, the AIADMK government came out with the best schemes for the people and ensured law and order in the State. Now, there is murder, theft and sexual assault cases every day. 'This Stalin model rule has betrayed the people.' It is anti-people rule for the last four years, he said. Regarding the education policy, Mr. Palaniswami said the DMK was in power at the Centre for 16 years as part of various governments. It did not take any measures then to focus on the education policy or to bring education under the State subject list. It does not care about the public when in power at the Centre. But, blames others when it is not in power, he alleged. The AIADMK has a cordial relationship with the DMDK, he added.

EPS slams MK Stalin over credit claim in Anna University assault case verdict

Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday welcomed the Mahila Court's swift verdict convicting Gnanasekaran in the high-profile Anna University sexual assault case. However, he strongly criticised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for attempting to claim credit for the judiciary's action. In a series of pointed posts on social media, Palaniswami asserted that the real credit for the conviction goes to the judiciary and the Madras High Court, which had directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) composed of women IPS officers to handle the sensitive case. He accused Stalin of trying to politically capitalise on the judicial outcome. 'Justice has been delivered not because of the DMK government, but in spite of it,' Palaniswami wrote, adding that the judgment should not be used for political mileage. 'The Chief Minister's self-congratulatory tone is misplaced,' he said. The AIADMK leader further stated that several critical questions surrounding the case remain unanswered. Chief among them, he said, is why the convict Gnanasekaran was released immediately after his first arrest, only to be rearrested later. 'What transpired between his release and second arrest?' he asked. Palaniswami also demanded clarity on why key figures, including a Minister and the Deputy Mayor, were never questioned during the probe. He questioned the abrupt withdrawal of DSP Raghavendra Ravi from the SIT, a move that had raised eyebrows at the time. 'Why did the officer resign midway? What pressure was he under?' he asked. Referring to the cryptic phrase reportedly used by the accused during the crime — 'Who's that sir?' — Palaniswami said this key clue remains shrouded in mystery. 'Who is that 'sir'? The people deserve to know,' he said. Meanwhile, AIADMK senior leader and coordinator of the party's Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee, O. Panneerselvam, praised the Mahila Court for delivering justice within five months. He said the swift verdict has rekindled public confidence in the judicial system and could act as a deterrent against crimes targeting women. The Anna University sexual assault case, which took place in December 2024, had sparked widespread outrage and intense political debate in Tamil Nadu. The court has announced that sentencing for the convicted accused will be pronounced on June 2.
