Canadian Captain Keaton Verhoeff Explains Decision To Leave WHL For NCAA
The captain of Team Canada at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup is defenseman Keaton Verhoeff from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., who is projected by many sources to be the second overall pick of next summer's NHL Entry Draft behind Gavin McKenna. 'Whenever you get to wear the leaf on your chest, it's just as big of an honor, but when you have a 'C' on top of it too, it's an honor for me, my family, and even for the guys around me, I'm super honored to be leading them,' said Verhoeff. Like McKenna, Verhoeff has made a decision that has only recently been available to Canadian Hockey League players – he's moving to the NCAA. It was a tough decision, however, as there's no existing blueprint for this path and no previous examples to follow. He explained his decision to move from the Victoria Royals, the team that had the best record in the WHL's B.C. Division last year, for the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks, one of U.S. college hockey's perennial powerhouses. 'Victoria was an awesome experience,' Verhoeff began. 'A great place to play for the year. I learned so many things from the unbelievable coaching staff, my unbelievable teammates.' Ryan Lin On Canada's D: 'It's Unreal; Any One Of Us Can Play With Anyone' Projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, Ryan Lin of the Vancouver Giants is one of several elite defensemen on the Canadian team at this year's Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Verhoeff praised veteran defensemen Justin Kipkie, Nate Misskie and Cosmo Wilson and head coach James Patrick, a former NHL defenseman. 'I have nothing but good things to say about Victoria, but for me, to experience an opportunity to go to North Dakota to have a surrounding staff there that are so knowledgeable about everything, from nutrition, physical treatment, the weightlifting … It's all top-notch and professional. I think, for me, that was just too big of an opportunity to pass up.' In all likelihood, Verhoeff will only be playing one season of college hockey. 'I'm trying not to focus too much on June but, obviously, it's going to pop into the back of your head a bit,' he admitted, noting that he wants to 'just take it day by day and focus on what I can control.' Canada Edges Finland, Sweden Wins Big In Hlinka Gretzky Cup Openers Ethan Belchetz had three points and defensemen Keaton Verhoeff and Ryan Lin had two points each, leading Canada to a 5-3 opening-day victory over Finland at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup's Group A in Brno, Czechia.

I've been to bachelorette parties in spots from Hawaii to Las Vegas, but a Canadian city has been the best destination so far
I've been invited to more bachelorette parties than I can count. They've all been a lot of fun and have given me an excuse to visit fabulous destinations around the world. I've been to Cabo, Napa, Puerto Rico, Palm Springs, India, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and more to celebrate dear friends who were getting married. I'm typically excited whenever a new invitation comes in, but when I found out one of my friends was having her bachelorette in Toronto, I was a little disappointed. I didn't think it would be an exciting destination for a girls' trip. However, to my pleasant surprise, I was wrong. The Canadian city completely blew me away. Toronto is vibrant and brimming with personality, art, and culture To match the city's creative energy, local artists' works were displayed throughout the hotel. The lobby even had giant dandelion sculptures hanging from the ceilings. The hotel was also located within walking distance of plenty of restaurants and cafés. I was blown away by the food offerings in Toronto. Some of my favorite meals were the French fare at Café Boulud, al dente pasta and traditional Italian pizza at Spaccio West Terroni, Latin-inspired cuisine at Baro, and Michelin-starred dining at Alobar Yorkville. The activities in the city felt diverse and fun Although lovely accommodations and great food are already pluses, the diverse activities available around Toronto really exceeded my expectations. For daredevils, CN Tower's EdgeWalk is a must. There's nothing quite like walking around an outdoor platform that's 116 stories above the city. It's an epic view, a great bonding experience, and a one-of-a-kind photo op. If you're traveling with adventurous wine enthusiasts, I recommend the helicopter tour with Niagara Helicopters Limited, which flies over Niagara Falls and ends at a winery. We also enjoyed a segway tour of the Distillery District, which was bustling with boutiques, cafés, breweries, and eateries. For a more low-key afternoon, Toronto also has several noteworthy museums, but I can only speak to the unique experience at the Bata Shoe Museum. It houses antique shoes from regions around the world, imaginative futuristic kicks, and unique artist exhibitions. My absolute favorite part of the trip was renting dresses at The Fitzroy for a night at the opera. The Fitzroy sectioned off an area of the store and provided us with bubbly and sweet treats during the dress fittings. I never expected a Canadian city to become my favorite bachelorette destination I'll fully admit that I was wrong about Toronto. It ended up being an incredible destination for a bachelorette party — and would probably be great for any old girls' trip, too. I had experiences that would be considered out of the ordinary on any trip, like helicopter tours and a night at the opera. Plus, every meal was uniquely delicious. The diverse activities, luxe accommodations, and memorable meals made Toronto my favorite bachelorette-party destination to date.

Sha'Carri Richardson breaks silence on arrest over airport incident with boyfriend
U.S. gold medalist sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson said she is seeking 'a certain level of help' in her first comments since her July 27 arrest for an alleged domestic violence incident at a Seattle airport. Richardson, 25, shoved her boyfriend, U.S. sprinter Christian Coleman, multiple times at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, as seen on security footage. 7 Richardson in the video she posted to her Instagram Story. @itsshacarri/Instagram 'More than anything, definitely a lot of self reflection, a lot of understanding of not only putting myself in a compromising situation with somebody that I have a deep care and appreciation for as well, is something that — holding myself accountable,' Richardson said in a minute-plus video posted to her Instagram Story late Monday night. 'I'm taking this time to not only see myself but get myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart and in my spirit and not allowing this moment, but accepting this moment to be more. 'So my only thing is, I want to be more — not just only for myself, for my family, my fans. I overly appreciate y'all supporting me and showing love and even holding me accountable to being my best self. So more than anything, I refused to run away … but face everything that comes to me head-on because everything on the other side is greater but you gotta go through in order to get there.' Richardson, who won a gold in the 4x100m relay and a silver in the 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, allegedly had a fiery argument with Coleman that turned physical last month, per The Athletic. An officer looked at security footage that showed Richardson allegedly grab Coleman's backpack and pull it, before she purportedly shoved him into a wall while he tried to evade her. 7 Richardson and Coleman (middle-left) at the airport. TMZ Sports 7 Richardson and Coleman during their dispute. TMZ Sports 7 Richardson was captured shoving Coleman multiple itmes. TMZ Sports The footage revealed that Richardson shoved Coleman multiple times. Richardson also 'appeared' to throw what may have been headphones at Coleman, according to the Associated Press, and she was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence assault. Richardson spent roughly 19 hours at the SCORE South Correctional Entity, and The Athletic reported earlier this month that the case had been cleared by the Port of Seattle Police Department. 7 Richardson also posted this photo to her Story. @itsshacarri/Instagram 7 Christian Coleman said his girlfriend should not have been arrested. CITIUS MAG/X Coleman, 29, did not press charges and 'declined to be a victim,' per the AP. He felt his girlfriend of more than two years should not have been arrested. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all round,' Coleman said on Aug. 3. 'I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. 'But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love. I hate the narrative too … its so negative. In the state of Seattle, even talking to the cop to whatever, he was like, 'There is really nothing I can do.'' 7 Richardson during the U.S. Championships on Aug. 3, 2025. AP He added: 'She just has a lot of things going on, a lot of emotions and forces going on inside of her that not only I can't understand, but nobody can because she's one of one. And I'm one of one too… She's going to be just fine. I'm going to be good too. So, it is what it is.' Richardson competed at the 2025 U.S. track. and field championships following the arrest, ultimately withdrawing from the 100-meter and finishing fourth in her 200-meter heat. She missed out on the rescheduled 2020 Olympics in 2021 due to a positive marijuana test.
