PM Modi greets everyone on Janmashtami; calls its festival of faith
Sharing an X post, PM Modi wrote, "Heartfelt Janmashtami greetings to all countrymen. May this sacred festival of faith, joy, and enthusiasm infuse new energy and zeal into your lives. Jai Shri Krishna!"
Janmashtami is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna was born.
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu extended warm greetings to all Indians in the country and abroad on the eve of Shri Krishna Janmashtami.
According to a release from the President's Secretariat, the President of India, in her message on the eve of Janmashtami, has said, "On the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, a festival filled with joy and enthusiasm, I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to all the Indians living in India and abroad."
President Murmu added, "The life and teachings of Bhagwan Shri Krishna inspire us towards self-development and self-realisation. Bhagwan Shri Krishna enlightened humanity about the attainment of the ultimate truth by following the path of Dharma. This festival inspires us to adopt eternal values embodied by Yogeshwar Shri Krishna. On this occasion, let us all take a pledge to follow the teachings of Bhagwan Shri Krishna and make our society and nation stronger".
Meanwhile, in Gujarat's Dwarka, special security and logistical arrangements have been put in place for Janmashtami, with dedicated facilities for senior citizens, differently abled devotees, and mothers, along with provisions for clean drinking water and enhanced sanitation.
Preparations for Dahi Handi festivities and Janmashtami are underway across the country, including Maharashtra, where grand Dahi Handi events witness devotees forming human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd, butter, and other milk products -- symbolising Lord Krishna's playfulness and his love for butter and curd.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor questioned on Sunday, August 17, as to why Keralites didn't celebrate Janmashthami on August 16. In a post on X, Tharoor said, "Yesterday, 16th Aug, 2025 (Saturday), was celebrated as Bhagwan Sri Krishna #Janmashthami across India — except in the state of Kerala!" He mentioned that the "Malayalam calendar shows this year's Janmashthami date as 14th Sept, 2025(Sunday), NOT yesterday." Tharoor asked people to "enlighten" him as to why this is so. "Surely even a Bhagwan can't be born on two different days six weeks apart!," he said. "Is there a case for rationalising the dates of religious holidays so that all adherents of a faith can celebrate with their fellow believers at the same time? After all, Keralites don't observe a different Christmas!," Tharoor noted. An X user explained Tharoor why Janmashthami in Kerala fell on a different date than rest of the country. He said, 'Most of India follows the Purnimanta calendar (lunar month ending with the full moon) or the Amanta calendar (lunar month ending with the new moon) for determining festival dates.' "Janmashtami, celebrating Lord Krishna's birth, is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada or Shravana, depending on the region," he added. The X user went on to explain that in Kerala, 'the Malayalam calendar (solar calendar) is used alongside lunar calculations, and local traditions also prioritise a specific astrological configuration of the Rohini Nakshatra (the star associated with Krishna's birth) or the precise timing Janmashtami's date is determined by the Ashtami tithi (lunar day) and the presence of Rohini Nakshatra at midnight, as Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight.' "In Kerala the presence of Rohini Nakshatra along with the Ashtami tithi is mandatory to determine the birthdate of Krishna whereas in other states it is not so," he added. Most parts of the country celebrated Janmashthami on August 16.

The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly was reacting to Siddaramaiah targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for describing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as the 'world's biggest NGO', during his address to the nation from the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day on Friday. Siddaramaiah had on Friday claimed the RSS is 'the world's biggest for-political-profit, for-hate, and most divisive organisation-unregistered, non-tax-paying, and conspiring to pit Indians against each other.' 'It's no surprise CM Siddaramaiah jumps at every chance to attack the RSS. It's not conviction - it's compulsion. It's not ideology - it's insurance. It's not belief - it's survival,' Ashoka said. In a post on 'X', he claimed that Siddaramaiah attacks the RSS to impress the Gandhi family and prove loyalty to the Congress high command, to keep the CM chair safe from the factional knives in his own party, and to distract from his government's failures, by demonising an organisation that serves the nation selflessly. Sacrifices needed to keep independence alive: Bhagwat
Bhubaneswar: Noting that Indians should not be complacent about independence, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday said they need to work hard and make sacrifices to keep it "alive" and also contribute to the world's prosperity and peace. Bhagwat made the statement while addressing a gathering at the RSS office in Bhubaneswar on the occasion of Independence Day. He said an Independent India too has its duty towards the entire world, which is facing innumerable problems and is unable to overcome them since 2,000 years. "Our ancestors ensured India's Independence by making supreme sacrifices. We too need to be as hardworking as they and need to make similar sacrifices to keep it alive and to make the country self-confident and emerge as 'Vishwa Guru' (global leader) to guide the world engaged in quarrel," he said. Indians must work hard as their ancestors did for three generations to get Independence, Bhagwat said, adding: 'This should be done on the basis of India's religion and intellect.' Indians also need to guide the world, said the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Bhagwat said India strives to bring peace and happiness to the world and to share its 'dharma' with others. 'We got Independence to ensure that everyone in our country could attain happiness, courage, security, peace and respect. However, the world is faltering. It is our duty to provide the world with a solution and create a new world filled with happiness and peace based on our vision, rooted in religious principles," he said.
