BEIJING: A Japanese business person was sentenced Wednesday to three and a half years in prison in China on espionage charges, according to the Japanese embassy in Beijing.
The embassy did not identify the man, who has been detained since March 2023.
Japan's Kyodo news agency described him as a man in his 60s and an employee of Astellas Pharma Inc, a major Japanese pharmaceutical company.
The man was charged with espionage in August and his first hearing was held in November but no details were released.
The Beijing no. 2 Intermediate People's Court did not immediately make an announcement after handing down the sentence.
Kenji Kanasugi, the Japanese ambassador to China, was present at the ruling but Japanese reporters were not allowed inside the courtroom, Kyodo reported.
The Japanese government has protested a series of detentions of its citizens in China.
An embassy statement called the sentencing "regrettable" and said the detentions are "one of the biggest obstacles to improving people-to-people exchanges and public sentiment between Japan and China."
At total of 17 Japanese, including the defendant in this case, have been detained since 2014, when China enacted the anti-spying law. Five remain in China, Kyodo reported.

India ready to extend all possible support: PM on Bangladesh plane crash

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (July 21, 2025) expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in an aircraft crash in Dhaka. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance, he added. "Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives, many of them young students, in a tragic air crash in Dhaka. Our hearts go out to the bereaved families," Mr. Modi said on X. He added, "We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance." A Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a school building in Dhaka shortly after takeoff on Monday, killing at least 19 people, mostly children, and injuring dozens, officials and witnesses said. The Chinese-made F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in Dhaka's Uttara area.

Japan's Ishiba says he'll stay in office to tackle inflation and US tariffs despite election loss

Trump has added to the pressure, complaining about a lack of progress in trade negotiations and the lack of sales of U.S. autos and American-grown rice to Japan despite a shortfall in domestic stocks of the grain. A 25% tariff due to take effect Aug. 1 has been another blow for Ishiba. At a news conference Monday, Ishiba said his LDP and the Komeito have agreed to stick with their coalition while seeking further cooperation from opposition parties. Ishiba resisted calls for his resignation and did not say how much longer he planned to stay on. He is sticking around for the country and the people, not for self-interest, 'to put the pressing issues on a path to a solution," he said. Voters frustrated with price increases exceeding the pace of wage hikes, especially younger people who have long felt ignored by the ruling government's focus on senior voters, rapidly turned to emerging conservative and right-wing populist parties. Established liberal to centrist parties, including the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, gained little ground. The Democratic Party for the People quadrupled its seats by campaigning for higher take-home pay. The right-wing Sanseito, running on a 'Japanese First' platform that puts tougher regulations on foreigners and brakes on gender and sexual diversity, surged to number three in the opposition. The LDP has lost support due to the people's discontent over the party's measures for rising prices, foreign residents and other reasons and that he will 'quickly analyze the results and learn the lesson," Ishiba said. None of the opposition parties said they want to form a full-fledged alliance with the governing coalition but are open to cooperating on policy. CDPJ leader Yoshihiko Noda told broadcaster NHK that his priority is to form an alliance among the opposition. 'Public opinion clearly said 'no' to the Ishiba government,' Noda said. Sanseito leader Sohei Kamiya told NHK late Sunday he is open to cooperating with the ruling bloc on conservative policies. While he said his party did better than expected, he would wait to gain more seats in the other house in the next election and attempt to form a multi-party coalition like in Europe. The Sanseito party's stance encouraged the spread of xenophobic rhetoric in the campaign and on social media, while also attracting people who are strugging with economic woes and looking for targets to vent their discontent and anxiety, experts say. The language triggered protests from rights activists and alarmed foreign residents.

Iran Rules Out US Talks Ahead of Nuclear Meeting With Europe

Iran said it has no plans to resume nuclear talks with the US even as it prepares to hold discussions on its atomic program with European, Russian, and Chinese officials this week. 'At the moment, we have no plans to hold talks with the US,' Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a televised press conference on Monday. Earlier, Iranian state TV said Iranian diplomats planned to meet counterparts from the UK, France and Germany for nuclear talks in Istanbul on Friday. Baghaei said Iran's deputy foreign ministers will 'seriously raise' Tehran's demands during those discussions. He didn't detail the demands but said Tehran will take the countries to task for their stance during last month's US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Baghaei also warned any attempt by the three European countries — also known as the E3 — to reinstate United Nations sanctions through the so-called snapback mechanism would compromise their right to any role in the nuclear negotiations and their ability to invoke any of its provisions or processes. The 'snapback' is a rule within the 2015 nuclear deal that allows participating countries to trigger a UN Security-Council process that could automatically reimpose broad sanctions on the Islamic Republic if it's deemed to be violating the agreement. On Sunday, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the E3 'lacks any legal, political, and moral standing' to activate the mechanism because of its failure to comply with the nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump abandoned it during his first term and because of the bloc's 'political and material support' for Israeli and US attacks on his country. On Tuesday Tehran plans to host Russian and Chinese officials for talks focused on the nuclear issue and the prospect of additional sanctions, Baghaei said. The meeting comes after Ali Larijani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, visited Russia on Sunday and discussed Iran's nuclear program and regional developments with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
