Flying after May? You'll need more than a WA driver's license

Are you flying after May? Your Washington driver's license isn't going to get you through TSA after May 7. That's the day the Real ID Act goes into effect.
Like the boy who cried wolf, the TSA has been telling us the Real ID Act would be taking effect for years. It has been delayed and postponed for a decade as states and consumers have been slow to adopt it. Let's not forget, this act was passed in 2005 as a way to make flying safer.
But this May 7 deadline appears to be real, and Christine Anthony with the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) said you should treat it that way.
'Obviously, the deadline has changed a few times due to the pandemic and other various reasons, we've been trying to say this is going to happen at some point,' she said. 'Make sure you're ready.'

After May 7, your Washington driver's license or ID will not be valid for getting on domestic flights, so you will need to get an enhanced form of ID unless you have a passport or another form of ID the federal government considers valid.
'We just don't want anyone to get to the airport and have them have their standard Washington driver's license, hand it to the TSA officer and have the TSA officer hand it back and say, 'yeah, that's not going to work,'' Anthony said.
I went into the DOL last week to get my enhanced driver's license, and the office was packed. Many people were there to do the same thing, but they didn't have the right information to prove their identity and were turned away.
Even if they had an appointment, they were being turned away if they didn't have the right information. I will tell you. Don't wait.
'Make that appointment today,' Anthony said. 'Don't wait until April because you're just pushing it too close to that deadline.'
I will tell you from experience, take more than you might need for that appointment. I brought my car registration, but I had cut off the bottom portion that had my address on it. If I hadn't decided to bring my W2, I would have been turned away as well.
There is a chance that this deadline will be extended. There is also a chance that the TSA might not actually turn people away or enforce it strictly right away.

But why chance it?
'Every deadline we take seriously,' Anthony said. 'We have no reason to believe that this deadline won't happen.'
There are more than 6.8 million people with Washington driver's licenses or ID cards. Only 26% of those are enhanced or valid for getting through TSA starting in May. Imagine if just a fraction of those remaining head to the DOL between now and the deadline. It could get ugly.
And don't forget, your regular Washington driver's license also won't be accepted at secured federal buildings, like military bases, after May 7 either.

Apple's Travel Upgrades: New Digital Passport, Live Translation for Messages and Calls
Apple is testing its own version of live translation, but not for face-to-face conversations through wearable devices. Users can store a digital version on their U.S. passports on iPhones starting this fall and live translations are also coming – those were the biggest travel upgrades Apple announced during its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday. 'While not a replacement for your physical passport, digital ID can be used for domestic travel at supported TSA checkpoints, in apps, and in person where age and identify verification are required,' according to Kathy Lin, manager for services software engineering at Apple. Google announced a similar feature in September. A TSA spokesperson told Skift at the time that it was about 10 years in the making, even as other countries have already implemented various digital passport programs. Apple already enables ID storage for nine U.S. states and Puerto Rico. Lin said there are more on the way. Below are details about more travel products that Apple announced – the upgrades are coming this fall, Apple said. Live Translation Apple is integrating live translation into the apps for Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. Those capabilities are accessible through all devices that have those apps, including the iPhone, iPad, iMac, and Watch. During calls on the Phone app, the AI can generate spoken translations between two people speaking different languages. It works even if one of the people doesn't use an iPhone, Apple said. The FaceTime app can show automatically translated captions when the calls are speaking different languages. The Messages app will send automatically translated text to a recipient, as well as automatically translate incoming messages. The iMac is getting a new phone app with the same live translation feature. Refreshed Boarding Passes The iPhone Wallet is getting an upgrade for its flight boarding passes. There's a new connection with Maps for easier airport navigation. There's a new connection to the Find My app so users can more easily see the whereabouts of any Apple Tag tracking devices and report missing bags if needed. The passes themselves will show real-time flight updates, with the ability to share with others. For Developers Apple said that developers can enable the new live translation within their third-party apps. And developers for travel and other companies can build apps that leverage generative AI from Apple Intelligence, even when the user is offline. Apple used the hiking app Alltrails as an example. With an upgraded app, the user should be able to search for hikes using everyday language. Apple Wallet soon to include passports, but it won't be valid for this type of travel
Apple announced that iOS users will be able to create a digital ID using their passport in Apple Wallet beginning this fall when the new iPhone operating system rolls out. An Apple spokesperson said during the event, "While not a replacement for your physical passport, digital ID can be used for domestic travel and at supported TSA checkpoints. " To be clear, that means even travelers who have a digital passport in their Apple Wallet will still need to present the physical document at customs and border checkpoints when traveling internationally. However, the Transportation Security Administration confirmed that a digital passport will be accepted by TSA officers at security screenings for domestic travel. When the REAL ID law took effect in May, many travelers had to double-check whether they had compliant driver's licenses or would need an alternative form of ID, like a passport, to board domestic flights.
