Sam Rockwell Says ‘Sinners' Success Is ‘Encouraging' for Hollywood: ‘It's a Big Swing'
Sam Rockwell is singing the praises of 'Sinners.' The 'White Lotus' actor told Variety that 'Sinners' succeeding at the box office is a beacon of hope for Hollywood.
'It was encouraging because it was rated R, you know? The sexuality felt palpable,' Rockwell said. 'And the fact that it made a bunch of money while mixing all these genres — 'From Dusk Till Dawn,' 'Sounder,' 'Devil in a Blue Dress' — I thought that was encouraging. It's a big swing. And it made a lot of money, just like 'Wonder Woman.' That was a big swing, too. Made by a woman [Patty Jenkins]. Did very well.'

Rockwell compared 'Sinners' to Academy Award-winning films that also transcended genre. ''Birdman' is another one. On paper, you'd think, 'That movie's not going to do anything.' But it was amazing,' he said. 'Same with 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' Everybody turned it down — Gene Hackman, James Caan. But look what happened. So yeah, I'm encouraged by certain things.'
Rockwell even compared the CGI twin trick 'Sinners' pulls with Michael B. Jordan to the work he did his 2009 film 'Moon.'
'I really dug it. And the technology with the twin thing has come a long way since I did a trick like that long ago.'
Coogler recently told Ebony Magazine that 'Sinners' was his break from directing franchise films.
'I wanted to get away from that,' he said of returning to his original indie roots. 'I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.'
Coogler previously thanked fellow filmmakers Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, and Brian De Palma for helping to inspire his leap of faith with 'Sinners.' He also credited audiences for purchasing tickets to go to the feature in theaters.
Coogler wrote in a letter shared with IndieWire, 'I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry, but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can. We don't get to do what we do if you don't show up. To see your response to the film has reinvigorated me and many others who believe in this art form. And together maybe we can expand the definition of what a blockbuster is, what a horror movie is, and of what an IMAX audience looks like.'

‘Smash' to close just over 2 months on Broadway
NEW YORK — 'Smash,' the Broadway show based on the NBC series of the same name, announced on the heels of a disappointing Tony Awards that it will be closing curtains later this month. The stage musical — which traces the roller coaster of making a Broadway hit centered on Marilyn Monroe's starry origin story — will end its brief tenure at the Imperial Theatre on June 22, Variety and Playbill report. News of the pending closure comes just two months after the Tony-nominated production opened on April 10, with a score from Marc Shaiman and Scott Witt. But, much like the Emmy-winning series that inspired it, the show had high aspirations but has hit many a low note. The New York Times reports that the show's weekly grosses peaked at $1 million for the week ending April 20 but ended this past week grossing a measly $656,161. For the latter period, Variety notes that the Imperial was at 66% capacity. Reviewing the stage rendition for the Daily News, Chris Jones recently bemoaned the new 'Smash' for lacking 'quality of surprise.' 'Especially given the level of talent involved here, the adaptation will be deeply disappointing even for die-hard fans of the source material,' which became a cult favorite and even netted six Emmy nominations, winning one for Outstanding Choreography. 'Smash' aired for two seasons on NBC from 2012 to 2013 and starred Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Katharine McPhee and Anjelica Huston, as well as real-life Broadway stars Christian Borle and Megan Hilty. Though the Broadway iteration scored two Tony nominations — Best Choreography (Joshua Bergasse) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Brooks Ashmanskas) — 'Smash' was snubbed for Best Musical consideration at Sunday's awards show. The show, directed by Susan Stroman, couldn't even perform during the broadcast, despite requesting to do so, per The Times.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is keen to make a movie with Patrick Schwarzenegger and Chris Pratt. The 77-year-old actor is open to the idea of a collaboration with his 31-year-old son and son-in-law - who married his daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019 - but insisted they wouldn't do so for the sake of it as the script would have to be good enough. He told E! News of the possibility: "It's one of those things that if there's a great script, then of course, we would do it. "But you can't just make up this stuff. You can't just say, 'OK, let's just put the three together in a movie and not have a great script.' " The Fubar star called on filmmakers to make the project happen. He said: "You don't have to talk about it, just do it." Arnold - who, as well as Katherine, 35, and Patrick, 31, also has Christina, 33, and Christopher, 27, with ex-wife Maria Shriver and Joseph Baena, 27, with Mildren Baena - is also open to the idea of following in his son's footsteps and starring in The White Lotus. He has spent a lot of time on the set with me when he was a kid. He was doing his homework in my movie trailer, he was watching me shooting on stage. I think he got the desire right then and there." Meanwhile, the veteran action star is excited about the new season of Fubar, even if he finds certain physical scenes "very, very tough" these days. He teased: "The second season is a lot, a lot of great, great action, and also really funny moments. "The actual sequences are very, very tough to do, especially when you do night shoots and all that. But it's a lot of fun." While Arnold is proud of Patrick, he recently admitted he was shocked when his son stripped naked in The White Lotus. During a joint interview for Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series, he told his son: "I couldn't believe [it]. "I said to myself, 'I'm watching your show, and I'm watching your butt sticking out there.' And all of a sudden, I see the weenie. "What is going on here? This is crazy. "Then I said to myself, 'Well, Arnold, hello. You did the same thing in Conan and Terminator, so don't complain about it.' "But it was a shock to me that you were following my footsteps so closely."
