Singaporean expats on truth about work-life balance in Europe

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: CNA Text Size: From left: Magdalene Huang, Ruzaini Mazani and Atikah Amalina are Singaporeans who have relocated to Europe for work. (Pics: Magdalene Huang, Ruzaini Mazani, Atikah Amalina) WITH perks such as four-day work weeks and unlimited leave, Europe can seem like a promised land for those seeking work-life balance. However, for some millennial Singaporeans abroad, that freedom often comes with trade-offs. Fresh into his first office job in France in 2024, Ruzaini Mazani was all set to reply to a sales lead right away. However, his manager advised the opposite: play it cool and let the prospect wait. 'I really couldn't wrap my head around it, but the Asian in me didn't want to ask why because I didn't want to be rude,' the 37-year-old told CNA Today. 'With time, I realised that being the eager beaver really annoys the French people because they like to work at their own pace. That was the sort of culture shock I had for several months.' Such surprises come with the territory for Singaporeans navigating corporate life in Europe, even if they do not share these moments on their social media accounts alongside their picture-perfect studio apartments and the ski trips they take. CNA Today takes a look at the lives of Singaporean millennials who have moved to the region renowned for its work-life balance, and how they have adjusted to an unfamiliar work culture, grappled with loneliness and navigated safety concerns. Former television host Sharon Au, for instance, famously recounted her experience when she relocated in 2018 to the French capital of Paris, where she was ticked off twice by human resource personnel for sending work messages outside office hours and not leaving the office by 6pm. In an interview in 2019, the Singaporean also said that she had thought of dipping her toes into a cafe business but realised that the labour law in France was very strict about hiring and firing people and 'disadvantageous … especially if you were a foreigner'. In 2020, she had to cope with the trauma after burglars broke into her apartment, which she shared with her pet cat. For some of the Singaporeans who spoke to CNA today, just settling into a new job in Europe can be a headache at first. Magdalene Huang, for example, pursued her goal of working and living in Sweden after she spent a year in Stockholm as part of the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) programme. After graduation, she relentlessly applied for jobs there while working in Singapore. It was during her stint at a FAANG company – one of the major American technology giants such as Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix or Google – that her resume finally caught the attention of a financial services firm. Working for a globally recognised brand gave her the visibility she needed to break into the overseas market. 'Even though I spent four years pursuing this goal, I was undecided when I finally got the offer because the thought of leaving home was so painful. But if I didn't do it when I was 27, I would become even more afraid to do it in my 30s,' the 30-year-old recalled. After accepting the offer in October 2020, she spent the next four months preparing for the big move. As with most relocation packages, the firm hiring her sponsored her visa, moving expenses and one month's rent. How employers handle this varies: some offer a lump sum, others reimburse you after the move. If it is a reimbursement, you will need lots of savings. Luah Xiao Wen, a 30-year-old who has worked for a pharmaceutical firm in Copenhagen for two years now, said: 'It's the norm across Denmark to pay three to six months' worth of rent upfront. So if you rented a S$5,000 apartment, you may need to pay up to S$30,000 in one sitting.' Most employees are assigned an agent to help with house-hunting and typically choose a place near the office. For Atikah Amalina, a 34-year-old FAANG employee based in England, she had to weigh other factors as well. 'In Singapore, we don't really have a 'concept' of crime, but in London, it can get quite unsafe depending on the area where you live. Because I wear the hijab (headdress), that was a really important consideration for me,' she said. After checking with friends who live in London about the neighbourhood she was eyeing, Atikah signed the lease with peace of mind and moved there in 2022 with her two rescue cats, then aged one and two. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PENANG'S SEAFRONT GETS STYLISH NEW LANDMARK

COME April next year, Penang island will no longer just be admired for its heritage and food, it will be celebrated as a lifestyle capital with the launch of The Waterfront Shoppes, the latest and most ambitious phase of THE LIGHT Waterfront Penang in Gelugor. IJM Land Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Tony Ling said the 1.5 million-square-foot retail destination designed as a lifestyle landmark will be offering up a curated mix of fashion boutiques, artisanal cafes, flagship stores and immersive attractions. 'Rising from premium seafront land, it is more than just a mall and has been envisioned as a vibrant, all-day destination for locals and tourists alike, where every visit promises discovery and delight. 'Also making its mark on the horizon is the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC), scheduled to open this October. 'With a massive 76,000-square-foot, column-free exhibition hall, which is the largest in the northern region, PWCC can host up to 5,500 guests and is set to become the Pearl of the Orient's premier venue for international events, banquets and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) conventions. 'PWCC, managed by KinMalaysia Management Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian subsidiary of South Korea's KINTEX (Korea International Exhibition Center), is already 70% booked for October. Ling describes The LIGHT Waterfront as a modern, integrated development that embodies the '15-minute city' concept, with everything a person needs accessible by foot. — CHAN BOON KAI/The Star 'PWCC is seamlessly integrated into THE LIGHT ecosystem, offering direct access to hotels, shopping and dining options, all within walking distance,' he said in a recent interview. Ling said adding to the allure of the integrated development are two international hotels located in The Light Exchange, which will also have offices, that will elevate Penang's hospitality scene by April next year. 'The 156-room JdV by Hyatt will offer a vibrant, design-forward escape, while the 303-room Galaxy Minyoun Hotel is crafted for those seeking sophisticated comfort and panoramic sea views under one roof. 'Interested buyers can now register their interest to enjoy early bird perks for Merione, a 39-storey tower set to further redefine mixed-use living in Malaysia, with a preview scheduled for the end of this month. 'To be built on 0.76ha (1.88 acres) of prime waterfront land within THE LIGHT Waterfront Penang, the tower will integrate 32 retail units, 72 shop or office units, 93 business suites and 145 premium residences in three layouts of 1,050 and 1,197 square feet. 'Residents and business owners will share access to a suite of exclusive facilities including an infinity pool, gym, steam rooms, BBQ pavilions, a pickleball court and children's playground, the first of its kind in Penang where commercial and residential spaces coexist in such harmony,' he added. Ling said the full 61.5ha (152 acres) development is being completed in phases, with Phase 1 comprising The Light Linear, The Light Point and The Light Collection, already fully sold and occupied. Key milestones ahead include Mezzo (Q3 2025), Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery (Q4 2025), Lightwater Residences (2029), The Waterfront Shoppes (Q2 2026) and Merione. 'Located just a stone's throw from Penang Bridge and directly linked to the future Penang Waterfront Station on the Mutiara Light Rapid Transit (LRT) line, the development ensures seamless connectivity to the airport, ferry terminal, Bayan Lepas FTZ and the rest of the island. 'There will also be covered walkway from the LRT station to The Waterfront Shoppes, and with top schools, malls and hospitals within minutes, THE LIGHT Waterfront Penang is set to become the most connected and complete township on Penang's eastern corridor,' he added. Ling also described THE LIGHT Waterfront Penang as a vibrant integrated development along the island's eastern seafront, designed to combine residential, commercial, hospitality, retail and leisure spaces in one compact area. 'Everything is within walking distance. This close integration of facilities mirrors the global waterfront city '15-minute city' concept, where daily needs are accessible within a short walk or bicycle ride. 'Strategically located next to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, the development offers strong connectivity to the rest of Penang. 'It is just a few kilometers from the Penang Bridge, the airport and the ferry terminal. 'This accessibility ensures residents and visitors can easily connect to key destinations while still enjoying the convenience of a self-contained community. 'A 750m waterfront promenade links the residential, retail and leisure zones, encouraging walking and outdoor activities. This focus on public spaces not only enhances the quality of life but also fosters a vibrant, active community atmosphere along the scenic coastline. 'Modern living is further supported by smart city features including fibre-optic infrastructure and site-wide Wi-Fi, together, these elements create a connected, sustainable and convenient urban environment,' he said. From the shoreline to the skyline, THE LIGHT Waterfront Penang is more than a project, it is Penang's future, shining brighter than ever. For more details, visit

MI Technovation's 2Q net profit contracts on forex loss

PETALING JAYA: MI Technovation Bhd continues to maintain a cautious and conservative stance on the outlook for the financial year 2025 (FY25), posting a 44% year-on-year (y-o-y) drop in its net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25). For 2Q25, the semiconductor assembly equipment solution provider's net profit fell by 44% y-o-y to RM15.6mil or earnings per share of 1.75 sen. This was due to a foreign currency fluctuation loss of RM16.8mil as opposed to foreign currency fluctuation gain of RM1.3mil in 2Q24, coupled with a lower interest income of RM1.7mil. Revenue, however, was up by 21% y-o-y to RM154.12mil as the group benefited from the momentum of advanced packaging demand where all its business units operate in, coupled with accelerated order pull-ins in the 2Q25 particularly due to near-term tariff concerns. For the first half of 2025 (1H25), MI Technovation saw a 39% decline y-o-y in its net profit to RM33.16mil or earnings per share of 3.72 sen due to foreign currency fluctuation loss of RM18.1mil in 1H25 against the foreign currency fluctuation gain of RM11.8mil in 1H24, coupled with a lower interest income of RM3.4mil due to lower bank deposits. Revenue in 1H25 increased by 17% y-o-y to RM273.7mil, showing an uptrend of sales performance on stronger demand of advanced packaging where all the group's business units operate in. The company declared a first interim dividend of one sen per share, payable on Sept 17. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, MI Technovation said the semiconductor industry continues to navigate a complex landscape marked by both significant opportunities and persistent challenges, including geopolitical tensions, macroeconomic headwinds and evolving trade & tariff policies, as it moves into 2H25. 'The group remains strategically focused on innovation and supply chain diversification, particularly within the semiconductor advanced packaging sector, to mitigate risks while capitalising on high growth markets,' the company said. MI Technovation is cautiously optimistic on the 2H25 outlook for its semiconductor equipment business unit (SEBU), anticipating a double-digit revenue growth for FY25. 'This builds on the momentum from 1H25, driven by sustained shipments of our advanced Mi Series Die Sorter in the mobility & wearables segment. SEBU's strategy remains anchored in delivering diversified product solutions across three critical market segments within the advanced packaging ecosystem,' it said. Further, the group stated it forecasts a modest growth for its semiconductor materials business unit (SMBU) in FY25, driven primarily by pull-ins of customer orders amid tariff concerns and renewed momentum in the mobility & wearables segment from increased adoption of its specialty alloys, by integrated device manufacturers and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test providers. 'Looking ahead to 2H25, we anticipate stronger growth in the high-performance computing and memory segment, fueled by the global acceleration of artificial intelligence applications requiring high-performance GPUs and high-bandwidth memory technologies. 'While facing challenges from geopolitical tensions, uncertainties in trade policy, foreign exchange volatility, and rising tariffs, SMBU remains focused on the disciplined execution of its business strategy and anticipates a modest improvement in 2H25 supported by typical seasonal new product launches with key customers,' MI Technovation said. Meanwhile, the group's semiconductor solutions business unit achieved a critical milestone in June 2025, completing the first power module prototype on its new in-house power module pilot production line in Hangzhou, China.
