‘Don't fight the wave, ride it' — the surfer maestro revitalising the Hallé
W hen Kahchun Wong was offered one of the plum jobs in the British orchestral world, it all happened so quickly he wondered if it had been a mistake. 'I thought it wasn't quite true and that they didn't have the right name,' he says, as he remembers the events of 2023. It's true he was a surprise appointment. The Hallé anointed its successor to Mark Elder, who had been in post for 25 years, after just one concert. Wong was 'quite terrified' of taking over the baton, but on the other hand there was also that elusive spark. 'There was something very special in the air from the first five minutes of the first rehearsal,' he says. 'It was so natural to work together.' And so it has proved. Wong's first season as principal conductor has been electric. Last autumn my colleague Geoff Brown praised the 'blazing Hallé force' unleashed when Wong conducted Bruckner's Ninth Symphony. This year I was impressed by the sheer drama of his Mahler Resurrection Symphony, a piece he has also chosen for his BBC Proms debut this summer. (Rather charmingly he'll be visiting the Proms as a punter for the first time the week before.) 'I do a lot of Mahler symphonies, and [the Second] is one of those special pieces,' Wong says. 'It's also about the idea of having the whole Hallé family — not just the symphony orchestra but our really good choir and youth choir — coming to the Proms for my first outing. It's not about the new conductor, it's about the new Hallé moving forward.'

How has Tesco's F&F upped its game By Fabulous' Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend ZARA has become a high street staple in recent years thanks to its hot-off-the-catwalk designs and affordable prices. But recently those prices have risen with the brand's popularity. However, if you are looking for high fashion inspired outfits with low price tags you needn't drag yourself to your local shops, just head to the supermarket instead. F&F has come a long way from selling a few backs of T-shirts and fluffy dressing gowns and is now a must have shopping destination for thousands. They produce good quality, long lasting and on trend clothes that puts others to shame. F&F is filled with Zara dupes and other looks inspired by our favourite shops that will set you back less than £50 - and you can get them while you pick up your dinner. I for one love F&F denim, it's durable, fits really well and has all the best silhouettes. So even if you're not looking for reasonable prices but just want good clothes, get yourself to Tesco.
