Wimbledon 2025 women's final live: Swiatek v Anisimova updates after Sinner overcomes injured Djokovic to book Alcaraz rematch

Independent12-07-2025
The Wimbledon women's singles final has arrived, with Iga Swiatek and Amanda Anisimova eyeing glory and hoping to avoid sporting heartbreak.
Each player is in her first final in SW19, though Swiatek is already a five-time grand-slam champion, with four French Open titles to her name and one US Open triumph. The 24-year-old Pole is also a former world No 1, and she is the betting favourite here, having exhibited great progress this summer on a surface on which she once struggled – as shown in her semi-final demolition of Belinda Bencic.
Yet grass is still not Swiatek's favoured surface, and the quicker play could suit the powerful Anisimova, the 23-year-old American who outlasted world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a brutal, enthralling semi-final. Still, Anisimova, seeded 13th, is in her first grand-slam final here, and her lack of experience could hinder her.
Today's showpiece match follows Friday's men's semi-finals, in which Carlos Alcaraz saw off Taylor Fritz before Jannik Sinner thrashed an injured Novak Djokovic. Those results set up tomorrow's final, a rematch of last month's modern classic in the French Open final, where Alcaraz fought from two sets down to beat the world No 1.

Neither player has ever reached a grand-slam final before, but their partnership has been fruitful this year, with finals in Miami and Monaco on hard and clay courts to go with this run on grass to the Wimbledon final. They've made a good start here, picking up an early break against Australia's Rinky Hijikata and Dutchman David Pel.

US Open mixed doubles champions make firm statement: ‘We're playing for them'

US Open mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori insist they are playing for 'doubles players' as they reached the semi-finals of the new-look event on Tuesday. Back in February, when the controversial 16-team event in New York was announced, with the intention of luring top singles players to compete with a new time slot and a $1m winners' purse, the 2024 winners described the change as a 'profound injustice' in a joint statement. The all-Italian pairing are the only doubles specialist team in this year's draw, courtesy of a wild card pick, and laid down a firm marker with their performance on Tuesday. Errani and Vavassori defeated first-round opponents and second seeds Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina in straight-sets before matching that feat against Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals. Visibly animated and vocal in between points, the defending champions seemed determined to represent the doubles locker-room with their on-court showing on Louis Armstrong court. 'For us, it was important to send a message before the tournament,' Vavassori said, in reference to their statement in February. 'When we got the wildcard, when Eric [Butorac, US Open senior director] called me, I was grateful to play, [but] at least there were not so many doubles players. 'We are also playing for them. I think it's important to show also that doubles players are great players. 'All the doubles guys were saying to me: 'You are the only one playing for now, so play also for us a little bit.'' Errani and Vavassori face the all-American outfit and late alternate duo of Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison in the semi-finals on Wednesday. The other semi-final is between top-seeded pair Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper and third seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. Both semi-finals will take place in the night session (midnight start, BST) on Arthur Ashe Stadium before the final.

Davies delighted by rise of Cardiff youngsters

Isaak Davies says Cardiff City's band of academy products are relishing the chance to shine in Brian Barry-Murphy's first continued their unbeaten start to 2025-26 on Tuesday as Davies' stoppage-time goal secured a thrilling victory at AFC came off the bench to make the game's decisive contribution after Barry-Murphy picked another youthful squad featuring eight academy strike means seven of the Bluebirds' eight goals so far this season have come from players who emerged from the club's youth ranks."You see every week now that the youngsters are performing," said Aberdare-born Davies, who joined Cardiff as a seven-year-old."It's good to see boys you have come through the academy with on the pitch. "The boys really deserved the win. To be fair to Wimbledon they made it tough for us, but the boys didn't stop right until the end and we got what we deserved."The Wimbledon win was a first away success of the season for Cardiff, who have now taken 10 points from four league games under impressive start has lifted spirits following relegation from the Championship last term, with Cardiff thriving despite signing only one player, goalkeeper Nathan Trott, so far this next challenge is perhaps the sternest yet for Barry-Murphy's side, who travel to Luton Town – who were also relegated from the second tier last season – on Saturday."I think every game in League One is going to be tough," Davies added."We need to play our game, focus on ourselves and obviously watch a bit of the opposition as well. Black Cats' transfer strategy a 'measured gamble'

Football Finance Writer Chris Weatherspoon says Sunderland "benefited" financially from playing League One football in four of the eight seasons since their relegation from the Premier League in Black Cats suffered consecutive relegations and spent four campaigns in the third tier before promotion back to the Championship in 2022. After promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs last season the club have already spent £141.5m and are exploring a move for Leicester's Abdul Fatawu which would move them above Nottingham Forest's £142m spend in the summer of 2022 - a British record for a promoted club.."The team that started the play-off final cost less than £10m to assemble and Rhian Brewster on the other side cost double that," said Weatherspoon. "They got promoted pretty cheaply and that is why there has been surprise at how much they've spent this summer. I didn't expect them to spend this much."The owners hadn't spent a lot of money - there was one deal prior to them getting promoted which was over £3m and even that wasn't clear. In terms of the rules, that has given them the space to spend."Despite being out of the Premier League for eight years they've benefited from being in League One for four of them because they lost less money than they would have done from Championship wages. They haven't built up the level of loss that other clubs have from being in the Championship for a long time."With the broadcasting revenue, even if they were to finish bottom this season they would make around £110m. "They have taken a bit of a measured gamble. They have spent big on three experienced players but the bulk of money they have spent this summer is on players under the age of 24."The measured gamble here is if they were to get relegated they are banking on being able to sell these players for good money next summer."Listen to the full chat on BBC Sounds
