Piyush was honoured with the award at the Harvard Kennedy School on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the Forum during the alumni reunion weekend.
Piyush Jain, Co-founder and CEO of CarePal Group, said, "I'm deeply honored to receive the Alumni Innovation Award from Harvard Kennedy School. This recognition holds special meaning for me, as ImpactGuru (and CarePal) was first ideated during my time as a student as part of a PAE (Policy Analysis Exercise) project and incubated at Harvard Innovation Lab. What began as an academic exploration has grown into a real-world mission - to make healthcare more affordable and accessible for millions of families across India and beyond. I'm sincerely grateful to the faculty, classmates, and the ecosystem at HKS and Harvard that encouraged bold ideas and purpose-driven entrepreneurship.
I am privileged to share this incredible honour with my co-founders, dedicated teammates, supportive investors, compassionate hospital partners and doctors, brave patients and their families, generous donors, and all our insurance and lending partners who have always believed in our mission. We are committed to working tirelessly on our mission to ensure that no one dies due to a lack of funds for healthcare in India and positively supporting over 1 million customers' healthcare financing needs by 2030."
Other award winners at Harvard this year include Natalia Gavrilita, former Prime Minister of Moldova, who received the Alumni Public Service Award. At the same time, Sebastian Burduja, Romania's Minister of Energy, was honored with the Emerging Global Leader Award. Carol Finney, Director of Harvard University's MPA/ID Program, was awarded the Julius E. Babbitt Memorial Volunteer Award, and Lisa B. Sloane was recognized with the HKS Fund Outstanding Alumni Award.
CarePal is an integrated healthcare finance ecosystem that combines a medical lending marketplace solution (CarePal Money), insurance and protection solutions (CarePal Secure), and a crowdfunding technology platform (Impact Guru) for healthcare financing. We aim to make critical and elective treatments accessible and affordable to every household in India.

MSMEs cry for survival, demand separate ministry
Ludhiana: Micro industries, which account for nearly 99% of India's total industrial base, are on the verge of collapse due to what industry leaders describe as "discriminatory policy changes" and "unrealistic definitions" under the MSME framework. Representatives from the World MSME Forum have warned that unless a separate ministry is created for micro units, nearly one crore micro industries could shut down within the next two years. In a letter to PM Narendra Modi, World MSME Forum president Badish Jindal stated that despite being the largest employment provider after agriculture, micro industries remain constrained by finance, infrastructure gaps, delayed payments, and lack of institutional support. "The sickness is increasing in the micro sector. If the govt does not intervene with a separate policy, crores of industries will close down," he warned. According to the Forum, 90% of govt procurement benefits meant for MSMEs are cornered by just 0.3% of enterprises, leaving the vast base of micro industries excluded. With limited access to credit and markets, these firms are further squeezed by the dominance of large corporate houses in retail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canada is looking for skilled immigrants from Jamaica! Canadian Visa Professionals Learn More Undo "Big companies purchase goods in bulk from medium and large industries, while micro industries lose out on sales. Even raw materials are cheaper for bigger players due to bulk buying, making their products more competitive," the letter highlights. One of the key issues flagged is the govt's decision to align India's MSME definitions with those of Europe and England. In Europe, a micro enterprise is defined as having a turnover of up to 2 million euros (around Rs 20 crore), small industries up to 10 million euros (Rs 100 crore), and medium enterprises up to 50 million euros (Rs 500 crore). "In India, where the currency value is 100 times lower, applying the same definition is unjust. This has been done under a conspiracy that dilutes the identity of micro industries, pushing them into unfair competition with much larger enterprises," Jindal said. Until June 2020, the investment limit for micro industries was Rs 25 lakh in plant and machinery and turnover up to Rs 5 crore. However, the govt revised the limits multiple times. From July 2020, the ceiling was raised to Rs 1 crore in investment and Rs 5 crore in turnover for micro units. From 2025, the thresholds will increase further to Rs 2.5 crore investment and Rs 10 crore turnover. Similarly, the upper limit for small industries has been expanded from Rs 5 crore investment and Rs 50 crore turnover to Rs 25 crore investment and Rs 100 crore turnover. Medium enterprises now enjoy a ceiling of Rs 125 crore investment and Rs 500 crore turnover. "In five years, the govt has inflated the MSME definition by 10 times, leaving genuine micro industries to compete with much bigger players under the same bracket," Jindal said. Data cited by the Forum shows that India has 6.57 crore registered micro industries, 4.77 lakh small industries, and just 35,760 medium industries. Collectively, MSMEs provide 18.36 crore jobs, of which 16.3 crore are generated by micro enterprises alone. Despite this, exports from micro industries remain negligible. Out of total small industry exports worth Rs 29,876 crore, micro industries account for just Rs 4,547 per unit on average, compared to Rs 1.41 crore per medium enterprise. The financial stress is also visible in bank loan defaults. The NPA of 6.57 crore micro industries stands at Rs 52,519 crore, or Rs 7,993 per businessman, while small industries account for Rs 19,677 crore in NPAs (Rs 4.12 lakh per businessman) and medium industries Rs 8,553 crore (Rs 23.92 lakh per businessman). The Forum has urged the govt to create a dedicated micro industry ministry to address the specific concerns of the sector. "Your govt calls itself a well-wisher of small industries. It is your responsibility to prevent crores of enterprises from closing down," the letter to the PM states. Without immediate corrective measures, industry leaders caution, India risks losing the backbone of its employment generation base. Haritha Mithram 2.0 application for waste collection promises better monitoring and online payment facilities
The Local self government department has readied Haritha Mithram 2.0, the improved version of the mobile application for doorstep collection of waste, with online payment facilities, better monitoring of doorstep waste collection, Malayalam language support and integration with the KSMART system. The pilot run of the new application is ongoing in 30 local bodies. The implementation of the online payment system is expected to bring transparency in user fee collection. The Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) members deployed for waste collection will also have a more user-friendly interface to deal with in the new application. The department organised a training programme for HKS members to familiarise them with the upgraded application. Along with Malayalam, work is ongoing to add more languages including Tamil and Kannada to the application. The department is now mapping all buildings in the State through KSMART to the Haritha Mithram application to ensure complete waste collection coverage. The application provides an option for common collection facilities for flat complexes and industrial establishments. In such cases, a common bill will be generated for the entire complex. Another new option is the availability of on demand services, which would allow the public to get services outside the regular calendar of the HKS. Currently, the various kinds of waste including cloth and glass are collected only in specific months. Through the new application, people can demand collection of specific kinds of waste on payment of a fixed fee. This particular feature will be implemented only as per the decisions of the respective local body and HKS unit in each area. In the next update of the application, the residents will get notification on the upcoming waste collection date and time, as well as contact information of the HKS worker who will collect the waste. Since the new application and data in it are completely cloud-based, some of the technical issues associated with the previous version are expected to be addressed. The Haritha Mithram 2.0 application will be formally launched in Thiruvananthapuram on August 20.

World Economic Forum Clears Schwab, Names Fink as Co-Chair
(Bloomberg) -- The World Economic Forum has cleared Klaus Schwab of 'material wrongdoing' after a law firm conducted a review into potential misconduct of the institution's founder. The body also said Blackrock Inc.'s Larry Fink and Roche Holding AG vice chairman Andre Hoffmann will take over the leadership of the WEF board of trustees on an interim basis as co-chairs, according to a statement late Friday. Interim chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe is stepping down. 'Following a thorough review of all facts, the Board has concluded that, while the organization must evolve toward a more institutional model, there is no evidence of material wrongdoing by Klaus Schwab,' it said in the statement. The board also said there is no evidence of any misconduct by Hilde Schwab, the wife of Klaus. The announcement ends a fight between the founder of the iconic institution and its board that was triggered by reports about potential misconduct by Klaus Schwab. Schwab abruptly resigned from the WEF in April after the misconduct allegations emerged, sparking the clash. The body launched an investigation to examine a range of accusations, including claims the 87-year-old used the forum's resources for personal purposes. The dispute escalated when Schwab accused the WEF's board of leaking details of an investigation against him to the media, complicating a peace agreement between the two parties. 'Minor irregularities, stemming from blurred lines between personal contributions and Forum operations, reflect deep commitment rather than intent of misconduct,' the WEF said in its statement, pledging to improve its governance. Fink and Roche heir Hoffmann have been serving on the WEF's board. The organization's flagship event, the annual Davos meeting, has emerged into a must-attend event for bankers, business figures and politicians over the decades. The next gathering will take place in January 2026. 'We remain optimistic. The Forum has an opportunity to help drive international collaboration in a way that not only generates prosperity but distributes it more broadly,' Fink and Hoffmann said in a joint statement.
