Faqra fire disaster: Rescue efforts save many, two tragically perish — the details

A widening fire broke out in a building near the Faqra roundabout in Kfardebian. Residents, alongside civil defense and Red Cross teams, rushed to rescue those trapped amid the flames. The fire engulfed a residential hotel and a construction materials warehouse on a hot summer afternoon.
Rescuers managed to save eight injured individuals but failed to rescue a woman and a child, the wife and daughter of a truck driver employed by the owning family. The driver survived despite severe injuries. All victims are Syrian nationals.
By what was described as divine intervention, the fire reached shops containing highly flammable construction materials. Injuries were numerous and severe.
LBCI spoke to two building owners, Joseph and Antoine Salameh, who declined to speak on camera pending ongoing investigations launched by the Aayoun el-Siman police unit.
They said the fire was intentionally set. According to their account, the blaze began when nylon bags covering insulation materials caught fire, destroying most of the insulation.
The building's security cameras were destroyed, but the electrical generator, which the owners said was not in use, remained intact. The building's power is supplied by solar energy and was not interrupted.
The owners explained the fire started on the lower floor, where insulation materials were stored and then spread to the first floor, which houses a construction warehouse adjacent to the Syrian family's apartment that lost two members.
Divine intervention protected residents from a greater disaster. But questions remain: Who protects citizens? Who regulates the construction sector and determines which warehouses meet public safety standards and can be located within residential buildings?
Such incidents happen repeatedly. With today's extreme temperatures, stronger and more effective oversight is needed to prevent threats to public safety.

One theory under consideration is that Hezbollah may have previously booby-trapped one of the ammunition boxes as part of its conflict with Israel, ensuring it would detonate if opened by enemy forces who had previously infiltrated the area. Another theory is that Israeli forces could have rigged the site. This possibility had been explored but not conclusively proven in a previous blast at a similar facility in Wadi Aaziyyeh, which killed one soldier and wounded others. Military sources stress that engineering inspections are conducted before any dismantling or transport, with specialized equipment and procedures in place for handling each box. South of the Litani River, the Lebanese Army operates freely in dismantling Hezbollah facilities, coordinating only with UNIFIL and the ceasefire mechanism. The current battlefield realities and losses suffered by Hezbollah have diminished its ability to maintain complete control or awareness of all on-the-ground developments. For now, the booby-trapping theory remains just one possibility. Investigators are keeping all options open, including the potential for human or technical error, pending the completion of all reports and testimonies that could shed light on the cause of the deadly explosion.

Syrian worker injured in device explosion in Sour
A device exploded Tuesday morning in an orchard in the locality of Hanieh (Sour), injuring a Syrian worker, according to L'Orient Today's correspondent in South Lebanon, Mountasser Abdallah. The man was transferred to a hospital in Sour. Several Israeli munitions landed on Lebanese territory without exploding during the more than 15 months of open conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, for which a cease-fire came into effect on Nov. 27, 2024. They also confiscated equipment used for counterfeiting money, a quantity of counterfeit currency, and military supplies. Additionally, another unit arrested the citizen (A.D.) in the town of Shadra – Akkar for possessing military weapons and ammunition, seizing a quantity of them along with military equipment. Moreover, a patrol from the Directorate of Intelligence in Hermel arrested the citizen (A.N.) for smuggling people and weapons across the Lebanese-Syrian border and for firing shots. The confiscated items were handed over, and an investigation with the arrestees was initiated under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities.
