How e-waste art is powering a new creative movement in Hyderabad
A 14x22-foot green 'tree' — lush with white, pink, and yellow flowers — rises up one of the walls at Sattva Knowledge Park in Hyderabad's Hitech City. At first glance, it looks like a vibrant mural. But look closer: this 600 kilogram Tree of Tech is made entirely from discarded electronics — motherboards, circuit boards, keyboard wires, switches, mouse cables, and metal plates from old desktops. Its symmetry and depth come alive through painted MDF cut-outs of leaves, flowers, and branches, giving the piece a striking, sculptural effect.
'Recycling e-waste into art is a small step towards sustainability,' says artist and sculptor Ranganadh Komari, who created the work alongside fellow artists Ram Bhoopal and Applachary for the Sattva Group. The trio also crafted a life-sized deer from e-waste at the group's Sattva Signature Towers in Banjara Hills. 'At JNAFAU, our professors constantly encouraged us to explore scrap as a medium,' Ranganadh recalls, referring to his interest in recycling that dates back to 2010.
Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, such works are drawing attention to the role artists play in repurposing e-waste. For Chetan Sai Vignesh, an art student, working with scrap was a creative turning point. His recent 3x2-foot mural of Padmapani — drawn from the Ajanta caves — uses motherboards, wires, and vintage television parts. 'I first sketched the figure onto plywood, then layered and cut the electronic parts to fit the form,' he explains.
But turning tech trash into visual storytelling comes with challenges — from sourcing components to making them aesthetically compelling. 'The concept was 'growth',' says Ranganadh of the tree mural. 'We sourced components from Secunderabad and Mumbai, and used Photoshop to prototype the design. But just the e-waste felt too flat. So we introduced carved MDF for a 3D effect.' The structure, made heavier by its 25mm plywood base, was eventually divided into four parts for transport. 'Cutting motherboards is tricky, they chip easily, and some shards are sharp enough to injure.'
Leading sustainability
While artists across India are experimenting with e-waste, one of its earliest adopters is Bengaluru-based Vishwanath Mallabadi Davangere. For over 30 years, the 64-year-old has been crafting birds, animals, and abstract figures from resistors, capacitors, coiled diodes, and keyboard keys. 'I was always fascinated by what lay inside a gadget,' he says. As his studio filled up, he began selling pieces to make space. A sustainability conference in Hyderabad in 2019 was a turning point. 'It gave me the platform to showcase this niche form of art,' he recalls. He now conducts online workshops, introducing others to the medium.
Still, Vishwanath is pragmatic. 'Creative expression is vital, but art alone cannot resolve the e-waste crisis,' he says. 'Recyclers face numerous challenges — extracting gold from circuit boards is chemically complex and economically unviable at scale.'
The United Nations' Global E-Waste Monitor 2024 paints a sobering picture. Electronic waste is growing five times faster than it's being formally recycled. As reported in The Hindu, India's e-waste volumes have surged by over 150% in six years — from 7,08,445 metric tonnes in 2017–18 to 17,78,400 metric tonnes in 2023–24. That's an annual increase of nearly 1.7 lakh tonnes.
Given the magnitude of the crisis, e-waste art may only scratch the surface. But it serves an equally vital purpose — raising awareness, prompting dialogue, and inspiring creative solutions. Because sometimes, the best way to confront a looming environmental challenge is to make people stop and look.

Tuljapur temple to resume distribution of prasad with Chitale Bandhu laddoos
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: After a temporary halt, devotees visiting the revered Tulja Bhavani temple in Dharashiv district will soon receive laddoos as prasad, with Pune-based Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale roped in for preparation and supply. The decision comes as part of a renewed focus on ensuring purity and quality in religious offerings. Confirming the development, Dharashiv collector Keerthi Kiran Pujar told TOI, "The prasad in the form of laddoos will be prepared by Pune's famous Chitale Bandhu." He clarified that the sweet-maker is charging close to Rs 29 for 50g of laddoos, while the temple trust will be charging devotees Rs 30 only. The Tulja Bhavani temple trust stopped distributing prasad some time ago after receiving several complaints regarding its quality. In a significant policy shift, the trust floated tenders in Sept 2024, inviting reputed firms to take over prasad preparation. This move was prompted by heightened concerns nationwide, particularly after allegations of the use of animal fat and fish oil in the prasad served at the Tirupati Balaji temple created a stir among devotees. Chitale Bandhu, known for its high standards in sweet preparation, was selected through a transparent bidding process. The Tulja Bhavani temple is one of Maharashtra's most important religious destinations. It is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas in India and draws lakhs of pilgrims every year. The temple also holds a special place in Maratha history, with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj known to be a devout follower of the goddess. Officials said prasad distribution is likely to resume once the necessary logistics and packaging arrangements are finalised. The prasad will be made using pure ghee and traditional ingredients, aligning with the temple's cultural and spiritual heritage. Government officials said the project aims to allow researchers from the international community to study the biology of Dada Guruji Maharaj, who walks from village to village to inspire spiritual devotion in people. Samarth Bhaiya ji Sarkar, popularly known as Dada Guruji Maharaj, is said to derive his energy from nature—trees, flowing rivers, as well as the earth and small pebbles he touches as he walks along the river banks. Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has approved a proposal to conduct scientific research into the 'nature-based' life and extreme physical endurance of a Jabalpur-based spiritual leader, who claims to have given up food since October 2020, relying solely on water from the Narmada since then. 'Dada Guruji, who is a spiritual leader, has been surviving without any food and simply on water while undertaking the 'parikrama' (ritual of moving clockwise round an object of devotion) of the Narmada,' Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla told ThePrint. 'This was a topic of research and so a team of medical experts from Jabalpur's medical college carefully observed him for a specified duration and then submitted their report.' He said it had still not been decided who would be approached to conduct further research. Dada Guruji Maharaj's growing popularity for his extreme endurance caught the attention of the Mohan Yadav-led BJP government, which constituted a panel of experts from the state-run Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in May 2024 to examine his case. The issue came up for discussion in the Cabinet on 3 June, nearly a year after the medical college in Jabalpur conducted a week-long comprehensive study between 22 and 29 May on the 'various body and mind parameters during prolonged fasting and continuous physical exertion'. Following the presentation of the committee's 124-page report, the Cabinet decided to send the proposal for further research. 'The government decided that this report will be sent to researchers, individuals and institutions so that researchers from the country and the world can investigate and research the nature-based life of Dada Guru,' panchayat and rural development minister Prahlad Patel said on 'X'. Shukla, who also holds the charge of health minister, added. 'It came up for discussion during the Cabinet meeting and it was felt further research should be allowed on how a human body can sustain without food for such a prolonged duration and still have normal vital functioning.' Marginal aberrations seen during observation During the week-long research, Dada Guruji was kept in a CCTV-monitored medical room at the Jabalpur medical college under police surveillance. Experts closely observed his physical, mental, biochemical and other parameters in the morning and evening, essentially before and after he completed a 20-25 km walk on the banks of the river. They found that Dada Guruji did not consume any food during this period and only had 300-1,000 ml of water from the Narmada at the end of the parikrama. Despite 40 to 45 degree temperatures, the medical team found that his body was fit and agile with no symptoms or complaints. 'There were only a few marginal aberrations in blood sugar, uric acid, blood urea, iron and ferritin, which were consistent after fasting for seven days. In our opinion, Dada Guruji's response to strict fasting and strenuous physical activity is unique and hitherto unreported in world medical literature,' the medical college said in its report to the health department. The report was prepared under the guidance of P. Panikar, a professor of medicine; R. Mahobia, a professor of patmedhology; and Dr R.S. Sharma, an AIIMS cardiologist. 'Based on existing evidence of humans and animal studies, we suggest that this unique response of Dada Guru is due to 'medical adaptation' and markedly increased 'endurance power' for fast and adverse conditions,' they said in the report. The report also quotes Dada Guruji saying that when doctors and scientists asked him why only he derived energy from the earth and the Narmada while so many others walking the banks didn't, he explained: 'One has to be selfless and pure of heart to get this energy.' Case filed for forging letter of minister's OSD
Hyderabad: The Central Crime Station (CCS) has registered a case following the discovery of a forged official letter from the office of the minister for information technology, industries and legislative affairs D Sridhar Babu. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident came to light after the minister's officer on special duty (OSD) U Raghu Ram Sharma received a WhatsApp message from an acquaintance on May 10, containing a suspicious letter purportedly signed by him. The forged document, dated April 2, 2025,was related to a cyber security project proposal from an Ahmedabad-based cyber security company. Investigation from the minister's office revealed several discrepancies. The letter used an outdated letterhead format that was discontinued on March 26, and the letter number 4145 was previously used in Oct last year. Official records show that letters issued on April 2, 2025, began with number 7059. "This act not only tarnishes personal and professional reputations but also undermines the integrity of the minister's office," stated Sharma in his complaint. The case, initially registered at Saifabad police station under various sections of the law, was transferred to the CCS and re-registered on June 3 under sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 336(3) (forgery for purpose of cheating), 337 (forgery of record of court or of public register etc), 340(2) (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the BNS. Police are investigating potential financial fraud implications related to the forged document.
