Maintenance of city's public swimming pools should be a priority

The Herald23-05-2025
For many in Nelson Mandela Bay's northern areas and townships in particular, public swimming pools offer the only entertainment and relief from the heat during our blistering summers.
Yet many of the facilities in these areas have been vandalised and left to deteriorate, some to a point where they are now beyond repair.
Take for instance the derelict pool in Schauderville which has been out of commission for years.
During a recent site visit, public works & infrastructure minister Dean Macpherson called on Eastern Cape MEC Siphokazi Lusithi to relocate the pool to a new site, citing the facility's vandalised and irreparable state.
Stripped of infrastructure and left derelict since the Covid-19 lockdown, the facility posed a direct threat to residents, particularly children, according to DA northern areas constituency head Yusuf Cassim, who formally requested the relocation in a letter to Macpherson's office.
'There is an urgent need to relocate the long-abandoned pool, which has become a hotspot for criminal activity, illegal dumping and gang violence,' he said.
A new site — on land opposite the Moore Dyke sports precinct and owned by the provincial public works department — has already been identified.
And now it is up to the relevant officials and authorities to act to ensure a suitable facility is erected for those in this area and its surrounds, those who cannot afford transport to and entry fees at more expensive facilities or the Bay's many beaches.
Because our public pools provide a safe space — in the areas where they live — for our children and teens to play, stay active and avoid negative influences such as drugs and crime which are rife in these communities.
In addition, in a country where nearly 30% of drownings occur in children under the age of 14, these pools offer a space in which to host swimming lessons, a much-needed life skill.
So it is imperative that municipalities, working with the other necessary arms of government, prioritise building and maintaining public swimming pools in disadvantaged communities and that they do so in partnership with NGOs, private sponsors, schools and surrounding communities — all of whom will then have a vested interest in ensuring the safekeeping of these facilities.

Alleged hitman linked to Prasa regional manager's death appears in court

A KwaZulu-Natal man who is alleged to have carried out a hit on Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) regional manager Jacob Khoaele on January 22 made a brief appearance in the Durban magistrate's court on Monday. Khoaele, 53, died in a hail of bullets in his vehicle on Shelbourne Avenue, La Lucia. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said on Saturday detectives had made a breakthrough in the case when they arrested a fourth suspect in connection with Khoaele's death. Mthandeni Cele, 24, was arrested at the Scottburgh magistrate's court where he was appearing in an unrelated case of house robbery and attempted murder involving a homeowner who was shot and his vehicle stolen on November 11 2024. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder. He told the court he plans to enlist his own private legal representative. Netshiunda said the murder investigation was handed to provincial serious and violent crime, murder and robbery detectives who cracked the case and arrested twins Vukani and Vukile Mchunu aged 35 on July 27. Investigations also pointed to Sandile Sakhile Ngcobo, 38, as the alleged mastermind behind the killing. Ngcobo made his first appearance on August 4 and is also an accused in a triple murder and attempted murder case in which he allegedly shot dead three people accused of murder in Msinsini in 2021. 'The three had just appeared in court when they were shot dead in a vehicle in Hibberdene on June 27 2024. A passer-by also sustained a gunshot wound during the incident,' said Netshiunda. Magistrate Ashwin Singh rolled the matter over to Tuesday and urged Cele to have his lawyer present. TimesLIVE

Smiling metro cop charged with wife's murder angers victim's daughter as she opposes bail

Bail proceedings for eThekwini metro police officer Qiniso Sishi, who is charged with fatally stabbing his wife Thandokuhle Mkhize, failed to get under way in the Durban magistrate's court on Monday. Sishi's lawyer Musawenkosi Mkhize told the court, packed with family, friends and political party representatives, he was not able to fully consult his client at the Westville correctional facility. Thandokuhle Mkhize, a lawyer, was stabbed multiple times in the early hours of July 28 at their home in Woodlands, south of Durban. 'I had an appointment on Friday to consult my client at Westville and when I got to the prison I was made to wait for two-and-a-half hours,' said Musawenkosi Mkhize. During the wait he was informed Sishi was in the medical wing of the prison where he was being treated for injuries sustained during the incident on July 28. 'After some time I was told he could not be located — no-one knew where he was. This [is the] reason the defence is not in a position to continue with the bail application. I require ample time to take instructions, otherwise I would not be doing justice with this bail [application].' When magistrate Ashwin Singh adjourned the matter, Sishi was all smiles, much to the chagrin of Thandokuhle Mkhize's daughter Aphiwe Mkhize, who shouted to him ' sengathi ungafela phakathi ' (may you rot in jail).

New speeding cameras in the Vaal

VANDERBIJLPARK – The speeding camera headache in the Emfuleni Local Municipality has left the municipality fuming. This comes after media reports claiming speed traffic equipment and data were repossessed by a service provider due to non-payment. Following the reports, the embattled municipality issued a statement calling the reports misleading. Makhosonke Sangweni, the municipal spokesperson, said in a statement, 'For the record, it is not true that a service provider has removed the speed traffic and data equipment for non-payment; this is an outright misrepresentation of facts and peerless disinformation. The withdrawal of the equipment materialised because the contract of the previous service provider came to an end after three years. As a result, they had to remove their equipment as a standard departure procedure.' Sangweni added that the municipality has formally appointed a new service provider to render the service. 'Thus far, the service provider has conducted interviews to source the new contract, installed computers, printers, software, and trained staff on the new system (Data capturing started on July 15). Around 4 524 new cases have been successfully captured,' he said. Sangweni said 70 handheld electronic devices, for law enforcement, were delivered on August 6 (training of officers happened on the same day). 'Accordingly, the progress of the new service provider is as expected, and the municipality has no cause for concern. Enforcement for speed prosecutions is still taking place while traffic officers continue to write summonses for offences related to the violation of the National Road Traffic Act.' Several political parties weighed in on the matter. DA caucus leader Duncan Mthembu said, 'We met with the manager of public safety in the municipality. Upon our meeting, we realised that the contract we had with the previous service provider had expired. What puzzles us is how it took the municipality three months to appoint a new service provider. We will write to the council to find out why it took the municipality so long to appoint a service provider,' he said.
