Egyptian Amb. to EU reviews Egypt's experience in combating human trafficking
CAIRO - 29 January 2025: As part of international efforts to raise awareness about the crime of human trafficking, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, Egypt's Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, Luxembourg and NATO, participated Wednesday as a speaker in the event organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on the occasion of the launch of the 2024 Global Report on Trafficking in Persons.
In his speech, Ambassador Abu Zeid gave a detailed presentation on the efforts of the Egyptian state in combating this crime, highlighting the national initiatives, legislative measures and international cooperation mechanisms that contributed to combating human trafficking.
The Egyptian ambassador explained that the Egyptian government has adopted comprehensive and coordinated measures to combat human trafficking since 2007, and was one of the first countries to take these serious measures, based on the objectives of prevention, protection, prosecution and partnership.
In this context, he reviewed the role of the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking in directing all efforts to combat human trafficking at the national level.
Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid also highlighted the successive national strategies to combat human trafficking, which aim to enhance coordination between government agencies and improve victim protection and prosecution mechanisms, stressing the importance of enhancing international cooperation and exchanging expertise to address the growing challenges posed by the phenomenon of human trafficking.
The event was attended by the European Union Special Envoy for Combating Human Trafficking, the Belgian Deputy Minister of Justice, as well as a group of ambassadors and civil society representatives, where visions and experiences were exchanged on best practices to combat this crime that threatens various countries around the world.

Abdelatty also voiced Egypt's concern regarding the growing threat of terrorism, describing it as one of the most serious security challenges facing humanity. He outlined Egypt's comprehensive approach to combating terrorism and emphasized the country's accumulated experience in confronting severe waves of extremism over past decades. Moreover, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for de-escalation between India and Pakistan to promote peace and stability in South Asia. He noted Egypt's deep concern over the developments in the region and welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, underscoring the importance of resolving outstanding disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels. During his visit to Cairo, Araghchi held high-level meetings with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. He noted the significance of these discussions, highlighting them as milestones in the evolving relationship between the two regional powers. Araghchi also underscored Iran and Egypt's shared responsibility in promoting regional peace and stability, citing their deep-rooted civilizations and influential roles in Middle Eastern affairs. In a gesture reflecting cultural and religious appreciation,Araghchi visited the historic Sayyidna Al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo, where he performed evening prayers. He later dined at the traditional Naguib Mahfouz Restaurant in Khan El-Khalili, joined by prominent Egyptian figures, including three former foreign ministers—Amr Moussa, Nabil Fahmy, and Mohamed El-Orabi. According to Araghchi, the discussions were highly constructive. This visit marks one of the most visible signs of rapprochement between Iran and Egypt after years of limited diplomatic engagement, signaling potential shifts in regional alliances and cooperation.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly underscored the pivotal role played by the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship in developing a well-structured approach toward startups and entrepreneurs based on the best global experiments. The move aims to achieve sustainable economic growth and spotlight Egypt's role as a key player in the global entrepreneurship community in order to enhance entrepreneurs' confidence and attract more investors and investments into the Egyptian market, he added. Madbouly's remarks came while chairing a meeting of the Ministerial Group for Entrepreneurship on Monday, June 2nd, 2025. The meeting was attended by Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ahmed Kouchouk, Minister of Finance, Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Hassan El-Khatib, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade along with a number of senior state officials. During the meeting, Mashat, presented a report highlighting positive indicators in many startups in Egypt. She noted significant progress in the first five months of this year, with startups attracting approximately $228 million in funding through 16 deals—11 of which totaled $156 million. This marks a 130% increase, compared to the same period in 2024. The minister also outlined the key points of Egypt's forthcoming Startup Charter, which will be launched soon. The Charter aims to build trust between startups and the government by clearly committing to the system's priorities as well as coordinating efforts by different government bodies to create a more efficient, transparent, and innovation-friendly environment in a move meant to serve entrepreneurship, she added.
