Egypt's Amb to EU: There is growing European support for Cairo's role in regional peace

Martyrs in Gaza after continous Israeli bombardment of entire residential blocks - file CAIRO - 29 May 2025: Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, Egypt's Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, Luxembourg, and NATO, stated that one of the main pillars of Egyptian-European relations is supporting stability and security in the Middle East. He noted that this partnership reflects a special relationship between Egypt and the European Union and demonstrates European interest in listening to the Egyptian vision, leveraging Egypt's role in peacebuilding, and promoting political solutions to crises in the region. Abu Zeid added, in a Zoom interview with journalist Dr. Menna Farouk on Extra News, that European partners are keen to benefit from Egypt's expertise and regional relationships, and to rely on Egyptian diplomatic capabilities to resolve crises. He pointed out that this is clearly evident in the way the European Union deals with the Palestinian issue, demonstrating a strong interest in supporting Egypt's mediation role, addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and listening to the Egyptian vision regarding the need to reach a comprehensive and sustainable solution based on the two-state solution and the protection of Palestinian rights. He continued, noting that Egypt's role is not limited to the Palestinian issue, but also includes contributing to addressing other regional situations, such as those in Sudan, Syria, and the Red Sea. He pointed out that the European Union listens to Egyptian opinion and takes into account the advice it offers in developing its collective position, despite the fact that the decision-making process within the EU is extremely complex, as it consists of 27 member states and includes multiple institutions such as the European Council, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. He emphasized that the ability of Egyptian diplomacy to reach these institutions and persuade them of various positions has contributed to pushing the European Union to adopt honorable positions that support international law and call for comprehensive and sustainable solutions to regional issues, especially the Palestinian issue. He emphasized that these positions do not come out of nowhere, but rather are the result of significant diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Egyptian state.

Egypt's Amb. to EU Stresses Importance of Strategic Co-op, Regional Peace

Nada Mustafa Ahmed Abu Zeid, Egypt's Ambassador to Belgium, the European Union (EU), NATO, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, met with members of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Mashreq Countries. The session was dedicated to reviewing Egypt-EU relations and listening to Egypt's perspective on the situation in the Middle East. The session began with a keynote address by Ambassador Abu Zeid, who outlined the current momentum in Egypt-EU relations following the recent upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership. He highlighted ongoing efforts to activate this partnership across its six pillars, emphasizing the importance of mutual benefit for the peoples on both sides of the Mediterranean. Moreover, the Egyptian ambassador stressed Egypt's commitment to strengthening economic and investment ties with the European Union (EU), building on the outcomes of last year's Investment Conference and the positive steps Egypt has taken in its economic reform journey. He pointed to the promising investment opportunities in the Egyptian market as a foundation for further cooperation. Regarding regional issues, Abu Zeid addressed the key challenges facing the Middle East, notably the Palestinian cause and crises in Syria, Yemen, Sudan, and the Red Sea region. He also underscored Egypt's ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability in both the Middle East and Africa, and the need for continued dialogue and coordination between Egypt and EU on these shared challenges. Furthermore, he also highlighted Egypt's interest in strengthening parliamentary cooperation, praising recent high-level exchange visits that have reflected mutual commitment to fostering stronger ties between the peoples of both regions. In addition, Abu Zeid welcomed the upcoming visit of the EU Delegation for Relations with the Mashreq to Egypt later this month, describing it as a valuable opportunity to witness Egypt's reform and development efforts firsthand and to better understand its perspectives on regional developments and its role in promoting stability. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies

Nidal Abu Zeid speaks about strategic shift in Palestinian resistance's work

Gaza - Saba: The Palestinian resistance continues to carry out various military operations as part of its confrontation with Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people. Military and security affairs expert Nidal Abu Zeid explained to Palestine Online that the military operations carried out by the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip reflect a calculated tactical escalation aimed at exhausting the Israeli enemy's forces through what he described as "tactical ambush." Abu Zeid said that the resistance is clearly focusing on targeting the human element in the enemy's army, as manpower has become a major weakness that cannot be quickly addressed by the occupation's military leadership. He added: "Most of the enemy's recent losses have been human, not equipment or vehicles, and this reflects a strategic shift in the resistance's work." Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

‘He insisted we take him to the graves': the Palestinian hostages coming home to catastrophe

More than a year after his abduction by Israeli soldiers, the first thing Alaa Abu Zeid wanted to do on his return to Gaza was hold his wife and children. He didn't know that Ali, his brother, would be the only person waiting when he arrived in Khan Younis earlier this month: Alaa's wife, Hala, and all five of the couple's children had been killed in an Israeli airstrike last summer. Abu Zeid, 48, the headteacher of a primary school funded by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) in Bureij in central Gaza, was arrested along with dozens of other men when Israeli troops raided the school turned shelter in December 2023. He would never see his family again. 'We had no idea where he was the entire time, we were so afraid for his safety,' said Ali, speaking on Alaa's behalf, as the UN employee is not authorised to speak to media. 'Waiting for him was very difficult. We were happy but it was mixed with deep sorrow. I didn't know how to tell him his wife and children had been killed.' Abu Zeid's family – Hala, 49, a teacher; Nour, 25, an engineer; Alaa, 22, a dentistry student; Riyad, 20, a science student; Walaa, 15, and Mohammed, 13 – were killed in an airstrike on their house in Bureij overnight on 20 August, eight months after he was abducted. Ali and his sons tried to rescue their loved ones from the rubble, but there were no survivors: just ripped-up body parts. When morning broke, they recovered more remains and, as is Muslim tradition, buried them the same day. This horrific story is repeated all over the Gaza Strip, where according to the local health ministry, 1,400 families have been entirely wiped out by Israeli bombing, numbers deemed accurate by UN agencies. The arrival of the ceasefire and hostage detainee swaps in January has brought joy as abducted Palestinians return home to Gaza, but also the painful process of returning home to search for missing loved ones, and grappling with the scale of the territory's collective loss. 'He insisted we take him immediately to the graves,' Ali said. 'He was very quiet, he didn't cry. I think he was in shock.' Abu Zeid was released on 15 February as part of the fragile ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas that paused 15 months of fighting. He maintains he had nothing to do with Hamas; like thousands of other civilian men from Gaza, he appears to have been caught up in the huge Israel Defence Forces (IDF) dragnet. Emergency legislation introduced after the Palestinian militant group's attack on Israel in October 2023 that ignited the war allows for the detention of Palestinians from the territory without charge or trial, classing them as 'unlawful combatants'. The IDF says the measure complies with international law. A Guardian investigation last year documented extreme and systemic mistreatment of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons since the conflict broke out – findings corroborated by Abu Zeid's experience in detention. At least 60 people have died in Israeli custody since October 2023. The headteacher said he was severely beaten on several occasions and his eyesight is now impaired, necessitating surgery. The prison in the Negev desert was overcrowded and often freezing, and prisoners were not allowed to seek medical treatment or wash, leading to outbreaks of scabies and other skin problems. Abu Zeid was given just enough food to stay alive: he lost 25kg in weight and his gaunt appearance upon release shocked his surviving family. 'He looked like a skeleton. At every moment in detention, he said he felt like he was staring death in the face,' Ali said. The Israel Prison Service has previously told the Guardian that it operates according to the law, and under the oversight of the state comptroller. Abu Zeid had no access to legal representation or news during his imprisonment. On his return, he knew immediately something was deeply wrong when Hala and the children were not waiting to greet him. Ali was forced to confirm his brother's deepest fears. He is recovering from his ordeal at Ali's damaged home in Bureij, and says he will return to teaching when fit enough. He has changed, Ali says: he is quiet and finds it hard to talk to people. He has grown closer to God, spending time reading the Qur'an. With his home destroyed, there are no pictures of his killed loved ones to look at. 'He imagined holding [his family] in his arms again, his children, and returning to live a decent life,' Ali said. 'Instead, he found a catastrophe.'

Egyptian diplomat: Egypt attaches importance to support & empower its expats in host countries

CAIRO, March 24 (MENA) – Egypt's ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union and NATO Ahmed Abu Zeid said Egypt attaches great importance to support and empower its community members in host countries. The Egyptian diplomat's remarks were made during his participation in the Ramadan iftar banquet, hosted by the Egypt lovers association in Belgium, and which was attended by nearly 200 members of the Egyptian community in Belgium. Ambassador Abu Zeid underlined the national and cultural role played by the Egyptian community as representatives of Egypt in their workplaces and residences. He also expressed the Egyptian embassy's readiness to participate in organizing cultural events, in coordination with the community members in Belgium. The embassy is also ready to promote their developmental role by launching a number of initiatives to encourage them to invest in Egypt, Ambassador Abu Zeid said, citing initiatives in offering housing, investment, and agricultural lands, as well as Egypt's Zero-Customs Car Import Initiative. He also reviewed the Foreign Affairs and Emigration Ministry's efforts in consular services, including the adoption of an integrated plan to digitize consular services, in coordination with relevant authorities. The ministry also launched an initiative to settle expats' military status and dispatch committees to issue national ID cards, he further noted. Abu Zeid concluded by calling on members of the Egyptian community to interact positively with the embassy by submitting proposals and ideas to improve services and organize events that enhance Egypt's positive image in the European community.
