"Sometimes I even think leaving might not be such a bad thing" - Allen Iverson on how trade rumors during his 76ers years emotionally drained him

Yahoo17-05-2025

In July 2006, Allen Iverson opened up about the emotional toll trade rumors took on him, not just as a player, but as a person. He explained that it wasn't only his own future on the line; his family also felt the pressure.
A.I. said the constant talk about whether he would stay with the Philadelphia 76ers became so exhausting that, at times, he thought actually being traded might be easier than dealing with all the speculation. At least then, he and his loved ones could finally have some peace of mind.

"Sometimes I even think leaving might not be such a bad thing because I might not have to deal with this every summer. My kids might not have to deal with this, my wife might not have to deal with this," shared Iverson, per ESPN.
Even "The Answer" couldn't escape the rumor mill
Trade rumors are a constant part of the NBA, often driven by media speculation. These stories — and everything that comes with them, like expert opinions, salary cap discussions, and predictions about new lineups — spark endless debates and keep fans engaged, especially during the offseason when no games are played. In essence, the public's hunger for this content is massive, even more so when big-market teams like the 76ers are involved.
However, for the players discussed, these rumors can be emotionally draining. Much like any job with an employer-employee dynamic, their sense of stability and well-being often relies on feeling secure within their work environment.

You might think that a franchise legend like Iverson, who had been with the Sixers since 1996, would be mostly left out of trade rumors. After all, he gave everything to the team and still put up strong performances. How could the front office even consider letting go of a cornerstone like him?
The media, however, saw things differently, and "The Answer" was often part of those blockbuster trade speculations. Although A.I. would eventually come to terms with it, the Virginia native still felt the impact.
"It's just tough everywhere you go, no matter where in the world, people ask you that same question. I am used to it, but I am also tired of it," said the 2001 MVP.

The end of a turbulent era
When A.I. made those comments, trade rumors were swirling — perhaps more than ever. The Sixers had just finished a frustrating 38-44 season, missing the playoffs for only the second time in seven years. For a franchise with title hopes, it was a clear sign something had to change.

As a veteran, the former MVP realized that better than most. He also said he understood why his name, in particular, dominated the headlines after that setback. The multiple-time scoring leader knew the NBA's business side left little room for loyalty when results fell short.
"We didn't make the playoffs last year, and when something like that happens, you feel like you got to do something. I don't know why it has to be me, but I guess I have that type of value," noted the legendary guard.
Although he also made it clear he wanted to stay with the Sixers, "The Answer" admitted that if the team no longer saw him in their plans, he would accept it. That moment arrived on December 19, 2006, when the franchise icon was traded to the Denver Nuggets after more than a decade in Philly.
In Denver, the attention faded for a short time — but only for a while. Trade rumors seemed to follow A.I. wherever he went.

For today's players in similar situations, there are a few ways to respond: tune out the noise, including social media and the press, and remember that the NBA is a business where change is constant and no situation is ever truly secure.

Nets bring in Auburn's Johni Broome for 2025 NBA Draft workout

Nets bring in Auburn's Johni Broome for 2025 NBA Draft workout The Brooklyn Nets still have a few weeks to go before they have to make some important decisions in the 2025 NBA Draft that begins on June 25. Brooklyn will be the busiest team at the Draft given that they have five picks in total to use and while they may not be using all of their picks in the event, they are still doing their due diligence just to be on the safe side. One of the ways that the Nets have been doing their homework is by bringing in players for predraft workouts since Brooklyn has all five of their picks in the top-36 of the Draft. The Nets have brought in a significant amount of players in for workouts already, but one of the players they brought in was Auburn center Johni Broome, who seemingly confirmed as such through his Instagram. On Wednesday, Broome posted a photo of a Nets workout shirt with the number four on his story, indicating that he was either getting ready for the workout or had just finished it. It's not specified in the photo what the number four is for, but it's most likely a reference to his jersey number as he wore the number four during his college career at Morehead State and Auburn. Broome, 22, is coming off a senior season at Auburn in which he averaged 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.0% from the field and 27.8% from three-point land. Broome was not only the SEC Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season, but he was also a consensus All-American, showing how highly-regarded he was. Broome is expected to be taken in the second round of the upcoming Draft and might be a target for Brooklyn. "Projecting Broome to the next level, teams should be able to bank on him for low-post offense, second-chance points, passing and shot-blocking. His usage, value and role ultimately changes if he becomes a more reliable spot-up or pick-and-pop three-point shooter," Bleacher Report NBA Draft expert Jonathan Wasserman during his write up on the 6-foot-9, 249-pound center.

Examining five potential landing spots for Jase Richardson in the NBA Draft

Examining five potential landing spots for Jase Richardson in the NBA Draft Taking a look at some places where it might make sense for Richardson to end up. As of last week, the anticipation is over, and we now know that Jase Richardson will not be coming back to Michigan State and will instead keep his name in the 2025 NBA draft and will have a new home after June 25. While this might disappoint some fans, it's also another feather in the cap for Tom Izzo and his program, who have a long history of helping players make it to the next level. My understanding is that, in the pre-draft process, Richardson was looking for a landing spot where he could find some minutes and develop with an NBA team instead of being sent to their G-League team to develop. In my opinion, if Richardson heard from the teams most likely to draft him that he would end up in the G-League, he probably would've gone back to MSU to grow for another season in East Lansing. This is in line with a lot of the teams who have been most consistently mocked as landing spot for Richardson. I think that Richardson is a really interesting draft prospect because his ability to play both on the ball and off of it on offense, and his defensive talents, could make him a valuable rotation player with a high floor from day one, even for a good playoff team. Below, we will look at five of the teams who have been slated as potential Jase Richardson landing spots and his potential fit there: Pick No. 16 Multiple outlets, including ESPN and Yahoo! Sports, have Richardson mocked to the Orlando Magic, and I personally think this is the most likely landing spot for him and a near-perfect fit. The Magic had the No. 2-ranked defense in the NBA in the regular season and were a playoff team. However, they were really lacking offense out of the guard position. They actually ended up starting 32-year-old veteran and long-time backup guard Cory Joseph in the playoffs to try and find some answers. If the Magic changed nothing about their roster this summer except for drafting Richardson, is it crazy to think that Jase could not just get playoff minutes next year, but could actually start for this team, depending on the match-up? This would also let Richardson team-up with another Spartan in Gary Harris, making the fit even more perfect. Oh, and his dad also played there for a few seasons. Pick No. 20 I think this is another great fit for Richardson. Like the Magic, the Heat are another top-ten defense who could use some more scoring punch on their roster. I think the Heat could use Richardson this year off the bench, and possibly even starting at times if he can beat out Davion Mitchell. I think this is another strong opportunity for Richardson. Oklahoma City Thunder Pick No. 15 It sounds crazy, but the Thunder, who are about to start the NBA Finals, have the fifteenth pick in this year's NBA draft. With their success, their payroll is about to go through the roof in the next few years as they pay their stars who got them to this point, and they will likely need to add some NBA-ready players who can contribute off the bench on cheap rookie deals. While the Thunder tend to prefer bigger players than Jase, I think adding a two-way scorer like him would be of interest to Thunder GM Sam Presti and will be one to watch. San Antonio Spurs Pick No. 14 The Spurs are starting to build the next NBA juggernaut down in San Antonio behind phenom Victor Wembanyama. Right now, the Spurs have two guards on the roster, Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox, who have questionable three-point shooting ability. They will want to supplement the roster with guards who can play off-ball and hit shots, and Jase Richardson can definitely do that. Pick No. 28 I don't think Jase Richardson would have stayed in the draft this year if he thought there was a chance he'd fall to the second round, and I don't think that's a concern, because if he manages to slip to the end of the first round, I'd expect the Celtics to waste no time in submitting their selection for the Spartans' freshman phenom. The Celtics would be a very interesting landing spot for Richardson. With Jayson Tatum injured, the Celtics will need to find offense somewhere, and with rumors of Derrick White and Jrue Holiday trades, there could be an opportunity for a rookie to come in and play big minutes if he's ready. Mac Jones embraces fresh start with 49ers after getting passed over in 2021 NFL Draft

Mac Jones is happy finally to be with coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers even if it came four years after many expected. Jones was linked to San Francisco leading into the 2021 draft but was passed over and ended up in New England. Now after an up and down first four years in the NFL, Jones is trying to revive his career as a backup to Brock Purdy in Shanahan's offense. "Obviously the world works in mysterious ways," Jones said Wednesday. "I'm glad to be back here and learning from a great group of guys, and that's players and coaches. You go where you go in the draft, right? You don't get a lot of choice over that, but I'm definitely excited to be here now." Jones and San Francisco were closely linked leading up to the 2021 draft after the Niners traded three first-round picks to get the No. 3 overall selection. Shanahan was looking to draft a franchise quarterback and was debating between Jones and Trey Lance before San Francisco finally opted for Lance. Matthew Huang/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The move backfired as Lance struggled to stay healthy and adjust to Shanahan's system. He made only four starts in two seasons before being traded to Dallas for a fourth-round pick in August 2023, having lost the starting job to Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 draft. Jones had a fast start to his career, helping New England make the playoffs in his rookie season. But Jones regressed the next year after offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left for Las Vegas, and he was replaced as the starter in 2023. Jones was traded to Jacksonville last March and started seven games for the Jaguars, throwing eight TD passes and eight interceptions. Jones has made 49 career starts, posting an 84.9 passer rating with 54 TD passes, 44 interceptions and averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. He said he didn't hesitate to pick San Francisco in his first shot at free agency and has hopes a stint as a backup here can spark his career in a similar fashion to what happened to Sam Darnold after he spent the 2023 season with the Niners. "I always love watching their tape," Jones said. "When you look at stats around the league, they're always in the top five, you see the little San Francisco logo. So I always love watching what Kyle did throughout the years and to finally get in and learn it, it's been a little bit challenging, but also a great challenge because it's things, some things I've done and some things I haven't done at all." Jones has had a different play caller every season in the NFL and said learning another new offense is like "drinking from a water hose." Quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi said that experience pays dividends this spring. "He's not new to this," Lombardi said. "He's not new to kind of new terminology new footwork and how to be coached differently. The one thing I love about Mac is he's always here. He's always willing to try new try new things. He's not stuck in his ways, and he really wants to try and do it our way." Lombardi and Jones have familiarity with Lombardi serving as receivers coach in New England when Jones was a rookie in 2021. Jones and Purdy have a relationship that goes even further, with Jones hosting Purdy on a recruiting visit to Alabama in 2018 and the two have thrown together in the offseason near Jacksonville before Jones signed with San Francisco. "We talked about that and joked around with it a little bit, just him being at Alabama and really before he took off too with his career and the amazing, obviously the National Championship run he had and then getting drafted and everything," Purdy said. "It's pretty cool. We were both just young kids both heading into college and then now here we are on the same team. It's pretty cool."
