Bryan Mbeumo joins Man Utd as childhood dream comes true

CAMEROON winger Bryan Mbeumo has fulfilled a lifelong ambition by joining Manchester United from Brentford in a deal worth an initial £65 million.
The 25-year-old, who scored 20 goals last season, signed a contract until 2030 with an option for an additional year.
'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams,' Mbeumo said in a club statement. 'The team whose shirt I wore growing up.'
United fought off competition from Tottenham, now managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, to secure the France-born attacker. Their third bid, including £6 million in add-ons, was accepted last week.
Mbeumo's arrival marks another step in United's summer rebuild under coach Ruben Amorim, who has also signed Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Paraguayan defender Diego Leon.
The Red Devils endured a dismal 2024-25 campaign, finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.
'My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday,' Mbeumo added. 'I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.'
Brentford director of football Phil Giles acknowledged the timing was right for Mbeumo's departure.
'There is always a right time for a player to move on and, for Bryan, that time is now,' Giles said.
'He has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world, and we are very happy for him.'
United's football director Jason Wilcox described Mbeumo as a 'primary target' ahead of their pre-season tour in the US, where they will face West Ham before opening their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on August 17.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is set to leave for Barcelona, while Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are expected to depart before the new season. - AFP

Belacan maker Jin Kuang stirs up a storm in Taiping

KUALA LUMPUR: Ow Yong Jin Kuang and Vivien Ng stole the spotlight at the Taiping Half Marathon on Sunday, powering through heat and hills to win the men's and women's 21km races. Jin Kuang, 38, clocked 1:15:55s on the scenic but challenging AIMS-certified course that wound through Taiping's colonial streets and Lake Gardens. It marked a strong return to form for the Perak-born, who had only recently recovered from an injury. "I'm happy with my timing today, especially since I only just recovered in May," said Jin Kuang, who runs a belacan-making business. "To be back at this level and clock 1:15:55 feels really satisfying," he said. "My PB is 1:14, and I don't have big goals now as I'm entering the veteran category, but if I can break 1:13, I'd be thrilled." Jin Kuang, who plans to race abroad next year, had extra reason to celebrate. Hs wife Yee Pei Ni won the women's 10km category just months after giving birth. "Usually, after childbirth, many women stop running. But my wife is very patient and disciplined. We support each other and take turns to train. Running is our shared passion," said Jin Kuang In the women's 21km race, 27-year-old architect Vivien was a class apart, crossing the line in 1:39:41, just three weeks after completing the Gold Coast Marathon in 3:22, which qualified her for next year's Boston Marathon. The former student of a Taiping high school now lives in Hong Kong. Her participation was a spontaneous decision during a visit home. "I hadn't planned to race but saw a post about it from my friend's dad, and the medal design caught my eye. " It was so beautiful I signed up right away," she said. Despite limited training due to post-marathon recovery, Vivien was pleased with her performance. "This was my first half-marathon in such intense heat and humidity, so I started conservatively. It's not a PB, but I'm really happy," she said. Vivien, who also won this year's Taiping Endurance Challenge's six-hour category with a record 60km, is now eyeing sub-1:30 in the half-marathon and hopes to complete all six World Marathon Majors. 21km Men: 1. Ow Yong Jin Kuang 1:15:55s, 2. Rizan Firdaus Rohaizad 1:20:03, 3. Danish Norhisam 1:20:19. Women: 1. Vivien Ng 1:39:41, 2. Chuah Joo Khim 1:42:52, 3. Yeoh Zi Kean 1:44:12. 10km Men: 1. Joshua Loh 34:45, 2. Izul Amirul Mukmim 35:36, 3. Luqman Nurhakim Mohamad 37:08.

Soccer-Man Utd boss Amorim hails 'really important' Fernandes

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Friendly - Manchester United Training - Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong - May 29, 2025 Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes during training REUTERS/Tyrone Siu/File Photo (Reuters) -Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim heaped praise on captain Bruno Fernandes after the midfielder scored twice in a 2-1 pre-season win over fellow Premier League club West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday. Fernandes, who scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season and won the club's Player of the Year award, was linked with a move to Saudi Pro-League club Al Hilal earlier this year. However, the 30-year-old said last month that he had considered the move but ultimately turned it down to keep playing at the highest level. Asked about Fernandes' importance to the team, Amorim told reporters after the win: "It was so clear last season, you can see it with the goals and assists. But it's not just that. "I think now he has more players, I feel, to help him to lead the group, and that is a good thing. He is our leader and really important, not just on the field but off the field. He leads by example. "Sometimes, the problem is he gets frustrated and loses a little bit of focus of his job. Sometimes, he wants to help the teammates so much, it is not the best thing to do. They have to do their job, and Bruno has, for example, to wait for the ball." United have signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo so far in the transfer window, with Amorim saying the signings would take some of the pressure off Fernandes in attack. "Last year, I felt sometimes I pushed him back to have more possession in the build-up, and we miss Bruno near the box," Amorim added. "With different characteristics from Bryan (Mbeumo) and Matheus Cunha - and I really like Kobbie Mainoo's game - he (Fernandes) will have more help this season."
