CK Hutchison may bring Chinese strategic investor into Panama ports deal with BlackRock
'(CK Hutchison) remains in discussions with members of the consortium with a view to inviting (a) major strategic investor from (China) to join as a significant member of the consortium,' the group said in a stock exchange filing.
The firm added that changes to the consortium's membership and deal structure will be needed for the deal 'to be capable of being approved by all relevant authorities'.
CK Hutchison announced in March it was offloading its global ports business outside China — including operations in the vital Central American waterway — to a group led by asset manager BlackRock for US$19 billion (RM80.2 billion) in cash.
The sale was seen as a political victory for US President Donald Trump, who had vowed to 'take back' the Panama Canal from alleged Chinese control, drawing Beijing's ire.
China's market regulator said in March it was reviewing the deal.
CK Hutchison said Monday that the 'period for exclusive negotiations' mentioned in the March announcement had expired, but that discussions will continue.
It did not name the major Chinese investor.
China's biggest shipping company Cosco was set to join the consortium and was requesting veto rights or equivalent powers, Bloomberg News reported.
CK Hutchison said it 'intends to allow such time as is required for such discussions to achieve' a workable arrangement.
It said it had stated on several occasions that it 'will not proceed with any transaction that does not have the approval of all relevant authorities'. — AFP

China's trade diversion from US may lower euro zone inflation
Pressure has increased on Beijing to accept higher tariffs after Washington cut deals with the EU, Japan and Britain.(EPA Images pic) FRANKFURT : A major flow of Chinese trade away from the US would likely lower euro zone inflation next year, when price growth is already set to undershoot the 2% target, a European Central Bank (ECB) blog post said today. China is negotiating a trade deal with the US and pressure has increased on Beijing to accept higher tariffs after Washington cut deals with the EU, Japan and Britain. 'If those talks failed and US tariffs on Chinese goods rose to an effective rate of around 135%, as threatened by the Trump administration, then China would likely sell much of its surplus product in the euro zone, pushing up supply and lowering inflation by as much as 0.15% next year and to a lesser extent in 2027,' the ECB blog said. While economists do not see this scenario as the most likely outcome, such a price drag would be problematic since euro zone inflation is already expected to fall to 1.6% next year and this trade diversion would raise the spectre of more persistent undershooting, potentially forcing the ECB to cut rates. 'It will take some time for consumer prices to drop,' the blog argued. 'Consumer prices for non-energy industrial goods tend to respond with the strongest impact materialising one to one-and-a-half years after the initial shock,' the blog said. 'Under this 'severe' scenario, the euro zone's imports from China could rise by as much as 10%, resulting in an excess supply of goods equivalent to 1.3% of overall goods consumption,' the blog, which is not necessarily the ECB's opinion, said. 'For the market to absorb such an excess supply, overall import prices would need to drop by 1.6% and non-energy industrial goods inflation may fall by as much as 0.5 percentage points in 2026,' it said.

Starbucks shares rise as CEO Niccol's turnaround plans gains traction
NEW YORK, July 30 — Starbucks shares rose over 4 per cent before the bell on Wednesday as the coffee chain's quarterly strong sales beat signaled that CEO Brian Niccol's turnaround plan was bearing fruit. A simplified menu and investments in store and labor operations were some of the highlights of Niccol's 'Back to Starbucks' initiative since he took the helm in August. The major brand reset follows several quarters of falling sales. 'It seems like the company is planning to be on offense next year once its new operating model is in place,' Morgan Stanley analysts said. Niccol yesterday laid out plans to upgrade the aesthetic design of stores, including a lower cost 'coffee house of the future' design and pledged more than half a billion dollar in investments in thousands of stores across the US next year. 'The goal has shifted from an initial 'Back to Starbucks' to an appropriately ambitious goal for a 'Better Starbucks,' where everyone can experience the best of Starbucks,' JP Morgan analysts said in a note. Tariff uncertainty and elevated inflation have hit US consumer sentiment, forcing some businesses to revamp their strategies. But for Starbucks, the drop in quarterly same-store sales, which refers to sales from stores open for at least 12 months, in its largest North America market was steady at 2 per cent. Meanwhile in China, same-store sales increased 2 per cent amid stiff competition from local rivals like Luckin Coffee and Cotti Coffee. Starbucks has been exploring options such as strategic partnerships and joint ventures for its China business, which was valued at up to US$10 billion (RM42.4 million, according to media reports earlier this month. Following the results, at least five brokerages raised price targets on the stock, while the company trades at a 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio of 33.28. — Reuters
